Learning Opportunities 2013
Government changes create new opportunities for over 24s If you are 24 or over from the 1 August 2013 and thinking of studying a Level 3 qualification or above, then you may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan, which will help you pay tuition fees.
Are you aged 24 or over and thinking about further education?
Who is eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan?
If you’re starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. These loans help you to pay the tuition fees charged by colleges and training organisations.
To qualify you must be:
What are they?
• L iving in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man or within the EU for three years immediately before this
24+ Advanced Learning Loans are loans for students who are studying within the further education and skills sector. These loans are paid to your College or Training Organisation by Student Finance England. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans will be available for learners aged 24 and over, at the start of their learning aim, studying at Level 3 and above.
• A ged 24 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper agelimit) and starting your course on or after 1 August 2013
• S tudying with a college or training organisation in England approved for public funding • E nrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 and above which includes: A levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships

How to apply You will be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan from April 2013. You can apply online via the Student Loans Company website for courses that start from 1st August 2013. The loan amount will be paid directly to the College on your behalf to meet the costs of the course fees. Repaying the loan You won’t have to pay anything back until you are earning over £21,000. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education (Level 3) programme and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your FE loan! West Cheshire College’s experienced Information, Advice and Guidance team can provide you with more information and impartial advice whether you want to do a course or Apprenticeship.

College Apprentice
Leads the Way West Cheshire College Apprentice, Natasha Williams, has become the second female in England and Wales to successfully complete an Advanced Apprenticeship in Logistics. Natasha, 21, from Bromborough, completed her training through the College whilst working at Wirral-based company TWA Logistics. Natasha said: “Working in logistics is a very male orientated role, but I didn’t realise that I was only the second female to finish the Apprenticeship. I’m so proud of my achievement. “I decided to do a Logistics Apprenticeship after starting in an administration role at TWA when I was made redundant from a previous job. I really wanted to achieve more from the job so I kept pushing to do some training.
“The Apprenticeship was tough but I had a lot of support from my employer and my tutor from the College who was always on hand to help me.”
Skills Development Are you an employer, or do you work in community groups, schools or local charities? At West Cheshire College we have courses that will help you to be more effective in your job role. The courses are either College-based, work-based or distance learning. Courses include: • Equality & Diversity (College-based or distance learning) • Safeguarding - Level 1 (Collegebased or distance learning) • Teaching Assistants Levels 2 and 3 • Childcare & Playwork Levels 2, 3 and 4 - workbased • Pre-employment training - Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care • Using Social Media for Business (2 hours per week over 6 weeks) • English & Maths upskilling for parents/teachers - City & Guilds. Since completing the Apprenticeship, Natasha has been given a full-time job with TWA Logistics as a Stock Controller.

Natasha added: “I really enjoy working in logistics. I wouldn’t have got my job without doing the Apprenticeship and I would recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone as it is a great way to get your foot in the door.

“My day-to-day role includes receiving stock, checking stock level, informing the customers of any issues, checking the stock before it leaves and completing the paperwork on the whole process, so it is very varied.”

Our Ellesmere Port Campus features new ATP approved tennis courts and the FitZone fitness gym and a full-size football pitch (scheduled for completion in the summer of 2013). There are various levels of membership you can choose from at the FitZone based on whether you wish to use the gym at peak times or other times ranging from £10 - £16. For Helen Eastop, 28, from North Wales, studying a part-time CMI Diploma in Management and Leadership Level 5 has led to a promotion.
The raising of the participation age does not mean young people have to stay in school. It’s important to make sure they think about all the different options available – such as Further Education College, Apprenticeships or working with parttime education or training.
Helen said: “When I came to College 12 months ago, I had just started a job as a Restaurant Manager. Since completing the course I have now progressed to Area Manager.
Making decisions about the future can sometimes be difficult and for many young people there is not always a careers adviser to speak to at school.

Case Study: Alena Johnson, Fashion Designer Former West Cheshire College art and design student Alena has showcased her fashion collections across the globe in Paris, London and China. Alena said: “I really enjoyed my time at College and my tutor was amazing. Access - Your Choice Are you looking to develop new skills to boost your prospects and gain entry to Higher Education? Do you want a change of career and so need a higher-level qualification? We offer the Access to Higher Education Diploma that will help you gain the qualification you need to go in to Higher Education. This year if you are 24 or over, and apply for a West Cheshire College Access OCN Level 3 Diploma you have two options: 1. A pply from now for a Pre-Access course starting in June 2013. Enhanced English and Maths, done as part of this course, will help to prepare you for the Access course in September. or 2. A pply from April 2013 for an Access course starting in September 2013 and you can apply for the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan which will cover the cost of the Access course. You will pay back the loan once you are earning over £21,000 a year. If you go on to Higher Education and successfully complete a degree, the 24+ Student Loan used to pay for the Access course will be written off and you will not have to pay it back. If you are aged 19-23 years, your fees for the Access course may be remitted, depending on your personal circumstances.
