MESSAGE FROM CONFERENCE ADVISOR

Bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and salam sejahtera. It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to International and local experts, Embedded System Researchers and Engineers to Penang, Malaysia to take part in the First International Conference on Electronic Design (ICED 2008) with Embedded System Applications as its main theme. I am truly proud that the School of Computer and Communication Engineering, has managed to organize such an important conference in the niche area of embedded systems, which is attracting academic and industrial participation, nationally and internationally. With such diverse and relatively large participation, I am sure that this conference will achieve its intent - to serve as an effective platform for us, the research community to learn, share and supplement each other's research, while keeping abreast of the latest trends in this arena. We invite you to use this Conference to create new, or to strengthen existing, partnerships between the scientific community, publishers, policy makers and society. Coming to the theme, what are embedded systems? Embedded systems are very widely used, with billions sold every year. Millions of hardware and software engineers work on embedded systems. The development of embedded computing as a research field has helped to move embedded system design from a craft to a discipline recently. This is an important move, because many important tasks (such as safety mission critical tasks) are entrusted to embedded computers. One question often asked about this field is how it differs from traditional computer systems? Are we applying the same principles to smaller systems? I believe that embedded computing, though it uses many techniques from computer science and engineering, poses some unique challenges. First, most of them must perform tasks in real time. This requires a major shift in thinking for both hardware and software engineers. Hardware! Software Co-design is the Key. Second, embedded computing puts a great deal of emphasis on power and energy consumption. Many embedded applications tend to be closer to the edge of energy operation envelope than many general purpose systems. As pressure continues on designers to achieve higher levels of device integration in Embedded chips (SOCs) while reducing cost, size, complexity and power consumption, the need to devise architecture-centric efficient algorithms has become very crucial. This conference, I hope, true to its theme, will address some of the design challenges and the role of architecture-centric algorithms and design methodologies that are capable of achieving the delicate balance of performance, power consumption, and cost in embedded systems. The Program Committee has packed the conference with a host of expert key note speeches, pre-conference tutorials, Invited talks and around 160 research paper presentations in 20 sessions along with many exhibition booths. I congratulate them for this astronomical effort.

A conference of this magnitude would not have been possible without the dedication and support of each and everyone of the committee chairs, organizing members, industry colleagues, sponsors, academic institutes, and all supporting organizations. We sincerely hope that the conference in the city of Penang , known for its rich cultural heritage becomes a grand success. So, whether you are an embedded system designer, Teacher, Researcher, manufacturer, chip/ system vendor, or a foundry person, the ICED2008 in Penang is the right choice to benefit from. I wholeheartedly welcome you all. I would like to wish you a pleasant stay in Penang, and may you have a fruitful conference. Thank you.

Prof. Ali Yeon Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International), UniMAP

MESSAGE FROM CONFERENCE CHAIR

Bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and salam sejahtera. I am most grateful to Allah, the most gracious and most merciful, for His blessings on us in organizing the International Conference on Electronic Design 2008 (ICED '08). This conference is indeed very meaningful to us all in the School of Computer and Communication Engineering (PPKKP) and UniMAP as a whole. The main purpose of this conference is to share research outcomes among the researchers and academic staff members of the various Universities, Research Institutions as well as members of the industry, especially in the area of Electronic Design. It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you, the research community to this humble yet pleasant conference. I am very pleased that after six years since our establishment, UniMAP has successfully conducted various conferences, and has received co-operation and support from members of the industry, as well as the research community in the country and abroad. Walking down memory lane, the last National Conference on Electronic Design (NCED) was organized in 2005 in Kangar. Looking back then, we had been a proud recipient of 35 local publications, presented over two-day's period. Today, in this round of ICED 2008, we could stand tall with 170 papers accepted for oral presentation out of 302 academic, industrial and international submissions after a grueling review process. Six keynote speeches, two invited talks and six half-day tutorial sessions featuring prominent speakers, and the IEEE-endorsement and cosponsorship are the special attractions of the conference. The best 10 papers will also be published in the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology. The theme for this year's conference, which is "Embedded System Applications", aims to examine in detail or put a measure on the level of embedded technologies and current trends in the world of electronics today, especially in Malaysia. I sincerely believe that through the 22 topics and four tracks that are held in this conference, researchers could effectively explore various possibilities in realizing embedded designs and applications towards practical and commercial utilization. I would also like to stress that in this era of rapid technological advancement, we as researchers will not survive without working in a community, supplementing and supporting each other's work. I believe that this conference would serve as an effective platform for academic staff, researchers and engineers to learn, network, share and to create an environment for intellectual exchanges which would benefit all parties greatly. As a consequence, inputs from our peers would greatly help improve the standard and quality of the projects one is working on. Lastly, may I ask that we work hand-in-hand in our effort to further enhance our research and development (R&D) arena, especially in Electronics, which this country and the world needs. With your continued support and interest in us, I am sure that the quest of making UniMAP a nationally-reputable university is not going to be impossible to achieve.

Before I end, I would like to thank our sponsors, and the organizing committee of this event for their superb drive in making this conference a success. Thank you.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. R.Badlishah Ahmad Conference Chair

MESSAGE FROM THE TECHNICAL PROGRAM CHAIR

Welcome to the First International Conference on Electronic Design 2008 being held during 1-3, Dec, 2008 at the Hotel Park Royal, Penang, Malaysia. This conference is a forum for researchers and designers to present and discuss recent developments in the Electronic Design in general and Embedded Systems in particular. The theme "Embedded System Applications" is apt and timely as there is a tremendous amount of innovative trends and new applications in this area in the recent past. Embedded Systems are all pervading - VLSI systems, Communication systems, Wireless sensor networks, Bio-medical systems, Vision systems, Mobile systems to name a few. The conference is attracting a large number of researchers and engineers representing academia, government and industry from across the globe. The three day program will consist of Pre-conference Key note speeches, Invited talks, Regular paper sessions, tutorials, Industrial exhibits, and banquets. The main focus will be on challenges and opportunities in this niche area. We received a total of 302 paper submissions. After an initial scrutiny and withdrawals, 234 papers were reviewed. We had a challenging task ahead of us of getting a rigorous review process accomplished. Fortunately, several international and national experts cooperated and completed the review process. As usual most of the reviews trickled in during the last week and we had a tough time keeping our schedules of informing the authors. We accepted a total of 170 papers and included TWO invited papers. I am happy to note that many papers went through three or four reviews and a few two reviews. Where there are only two reviews, the is agreement between the two papers were accepted only when there reviewers otherwise it was sent for a third review. Overall it is a very challenging and satisfying exercise and we want to thank everyone who served as a reviewer or as a TPC member. Thus we can say we have an outstanding technical program for this conference. It is unfortunate that we are unable to include several other good papers in the program due to the limited number of sessions that could be accommodated in two days. We have six key note speeches and two invited talks for this conference from eminent speakers from industry and academia. The key note speakers are: 1. Heck-SweeneY,Gail, General manager Agilent Technologies, Beijing, China. 2. Dr. Narain Arora, Silterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Malaysia 3.
