• Make an example out of this one so the others don’t do it! • I can’t believe the risk this teen put other motorists in.
Pull up your pants • Change the scenario: What would our teens and young adults say if middle aged and senior citizens wore their pants down under their backsides? Would all the young people like to look at granny panties, speedos, Depends and the occasional thong or bare backside? I have seen more cracks on folks here than there was in the Washington Monument after the earth quake. Don’t come to my house and think you’ll sit on my furniture like that! If you think it’s cool, well it’s not! Get a life and pull up your pants!

Letters to the editor Main Street won’t host Halloween Festival We wanted to thank the community for their support of Okeechobee Main Street’s Halloween festival in years past. However, Main Street has recently learned of the additional activities that will be taking place the same day and time of our annual festival. The local church organizations are hosting a Trunk or Treat event using Flagler Parks 2-6 with corresponding street closures; as well as the high school will be holding their Homecoming parade that same evening. These events will allow families to remain in town and be able to allow children of all ages to participate in a Halloween event as well as allow older children to participate in a school tradition. After careful consideration by our board it has been decided that we will withdraw from hosting a Halloween Festival this year. This decision was not made lightly but the organization believes that these other events will negatively impact the value of our festival. So for the betterment of the community we would like to offer our support and best wishes for the success of these other events during a time of fun and celebration. Thank you Sharie Turgeon Okeechobee Main Street
en’s health issues are beginning to achieve the attention so needed. There is a women’s issue we don’t often associate with health: Domestic Violence. But it is! Read on. Nearly one third of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives. Annually, about one-third of all women seeking hospital emergency room care did so as a result of intimate partner abuse injuries (at a cost of billions of dollars). And 38% of murdered women were killed by an intimate partner. That is a rate greater than three a day in the U.S. Each year about 324,000 pregnant women are physically abused by their intimate partner, and homicide is the leading cause of traumatic death for pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S. That makes abuse more common than gestational diabetes or preeclampsia—conditions routinely screened for. Abuse is typically not screened for. Health conditions associated with domestic abuse include chronic pain, back and neck disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and sexually transmitted diseases. When we think of domestic violence all too often we dismiss it as a “marital problem,” a “private matter,” as a result of “individual choices,” that are, “none of our business.” Yet, clearly we can see that domestic violence is a major public health issue worthy of dismay and distress by our community, worthy of outrage, worthy of intolerance in our increasingly tolerant society. We cannot afford to leave our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends alone to suffer these ills and pay, perhaps, the ultimate price at the hand of an abusive partner. It’s time, don’t you think, to address this issue openly. To call it what it is, one of the largest women’s health issues we confront as a society, and put the full force of our immense resources into ending this scourge that has a very known and addressable cause … an abusive person. Domestic violence shares October as its awareness month. Will you choose to see it all around you? Jonathan Bean Executive Director Martha’s House

FWC program offers awards for lucky anglers
Special to the Okeechobee News Barely a year ago it was just a good idea waiting to happen, now the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is preparing to give away the first TrophyCatch championship ring and a slew of other prizes—a boat, fiberglass fish mount and more—to the winners, including a special $10,000 prize presented by Experience Kissimmee. “TrophyCatch is the ultimate reward program for anglers, offering great prizes for doing the right thing,” said Tom Champeau, director of the FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. TrophyCatch is FWC’s latest angler-recognition program and goes much further than ever before to reward anglers for documenting and releasing trophy largemouth bass. The largemouth bass is the most soughtafter recreational species in North America. Florida is home to a unique subspecies that has long been known for it’s superior growth rate and trophy size. The FWC will use data from this program to help enhance and promote trophy bass fisheries throughout the state. Anglers who register for free at www. TrophyCatchFlorida.com are immediately eligible for an annual drawing for a Phoenix bass boat powered by Mercury. Then, when they catch a bass over 8 pounds, they simply take a quick photo of the entire fish on a scale clearly showing the weight, snap a few more optional photos and release the bass to thrill another angler another day. By submitting photos for verification online, anglers become eligible for a custom certificate and decal, plus awards based on the bass’ weight. Lunker Club entrants (8-9.9 pounds) receive a $50 Bass Pro Shops gift card and Bass King T-shirt. Trophy Club participants (10-12.9 pounds) earn a total of $150 worth of gift cards (Bass Pro Shops, Dick’s Sporting Goods and/or Rapala), plus a long-sleeve T-shirt. To be entered into the Hall of Fame, anglers must catch, carefully document and release a bass weighing more than 13 pounds – but it’s worth it. Hall-of-Fame entrants also receive a free $500 fiberglass mount of their fish from New Waves Taxidermy, $200 in gift cards, a duffle
bag full of Bass King apparel, a Glen Lau video library and other prizes worth a total of $1,000. Bob Williams of Alloway, N.J., was fishing on Rodman Reservoir with guide Sean Rush of Trophy Bass Expeditions on Feb. 18, 2012, when he hooked a 13-pound, 14ounce largemouth on a big shiner. Rush contacted the FWC to have the fish certified in Florida’s new TrophyCatch program, the result being that Williams gets more than $1,000 in rewards for documenting and releasing his catch. Williams will also claim the statewide grand prize of the TrophyCatch ring. Over 4,000 anglers registered this first year, and 132 Lunker Club bass and 58 Trophy Club bass were documented. According to KP Clements, TrophyCatch coordinator, there were innumerable other huge bass reported around the state this first year, including one that may have been nearly 17 pounds, but these submissions could not be verified. “Next year, we want everyone to be prepared to take a photo of their fish on a scale, quickly release their bass and submit photos to www.TrophyCatchFlorida.com,” Clements said. The winner of the 2013 Phoenix 619 bass boat, powered by Mercury, will be announced following a random drawing in the near future. In addition, Experience Kissimmee will announce the winner of its $10,000 cash award for the biggest verified TrophyCatch bass from Osceola County caught between Oct. 1, 2012, and Sept. 30, 2013. The catch must have already been caught and be documented and verified by Oct. 8 to count. Keep an eye on Facebook.com/TrophyCatchFlorida to see who wins. For the second year, which began Oct. 1, the only required photo, for all three club levels, must show the entire bass (head to tail) on a scale, with the weight clearly visible. Additional photos of the angler holding the bass, the entire bass on a measuring board with the length clearly visible, and the fish being released can be submitted, but are not required. Anglers who catch a Hall-of-Fame Clublevel fish (13 pounds and larger) are encouraged to contact the FWC at 855-FL-TROPHY (358-7674). If possible, an FWC employee
E-cigarette use by teens increasing
The number of middle school and high school students in the United States who used electronic cigarettes doubled in 2012 compared to just a year earlier, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nearly 1.8 million middle school and high school students nationwide had tried e-cigarettes last year, the report said. The Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida is alarmed by the mounting body of evidence that shows that youth are, indeed, using e-cigarettes. In Florida, 4.3 percent of middle school students and 12.1 percent of high school students had ever tried e-cigarettes in 2013, according to new data released by the health department last week.
The number of Florida high school students who had tried e-cigarettes doubled – from 6 percent in 2011 to 12.1 percent in 2013. Aside from their potentially harmful health effects, e-cigarettes are becoming a tool used to get youth and young adults hooked on nicotine, which is a highly addictive, dangerous chemical. “E-cigarettes have brought Big Tobacco back into families’ living rooms,” said Tobacco Free Florida Bureau Chief Shannon Hughes. “Tobacco products like cigarettes and dip have been banned from advertising on TV for decades, and for good reason. Yet, new in-your-face e-cigarette ads have recently infiltrated our airwaves with commercials that seem to have taken a page out of Big Tobacco’s playbook for targeting young people.”
will meet the angler to collect data and document the catch. If someone cannot immediately respond, anglers will be advised to photograph and release Hall-of-Fame bass as soon as possible. Experience Kissimmee will again offer a $10,000 prize, so check the TrophyCatch website for important updates on the process and leader board. For trophy bass caught and released during organized bass tournaments, anglers can either submit a photo of the entire bass on a scale with the weight visible, have the catch verified by an FWC employee or volunteer working that event, or submit a photograph of the fish with a Web link to the documented weight.
The FWC is seeking additional input from the public on how to best promote the program and to encourage anglers who catch trophy bass to document them and then release them. In addition to rewarding themselves and being able to say, “My trophy swims in Florida,” anglers will be helping biologists learn the best ways to ensure the presence of trophy bass for future generations. People can also “like” www.Facebook. com/TrophyCatchFlorida to hear about all the big winners this year. Anglers should register now and be sure to have a scale and camera in their boat, so they can be the FWC’s next TrophyCatch winner.

CITY Continued From Page 1
Serving the communities southNews of Lake Okeechobee Okeechobee placed at most of the intersections in the seven-block long project with the exception of Northwest Second Avenue. In other actions the mayor presented a 10-year longevity service award to City Police Sergeant Phillip ‘Skip’ Eddings. The city adopted new permit fees that mirror those charged by Okeechobee County. An additional $10,000 per year would be generated by the city. A single-family home would cost a minimum of $75. The formula would be $5 per thousand total valuation of the home. Commercial would be a minimum of $150 or $6.75 per thousand total valuation. A complete list of fees was approved. The new fees go into effect on Nov. 1, 2013. The council also waived formal bidding procedures and allowed a contract for annual mapping services with Global Mapping Services for $8,800. The contract price has remained the same for the past four years according to City Clerk Lane Gamiotea. The council amended their regular schedule to cancel their regular meeting on Dec. 17. The start time of the Dec. 3 meeting was changed to 2 p.m. to accommodate the annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony in City Hall Park planned for that evening. They also cancelled their meeting scheduled for Jan. 7, 2014. The council also agreed to consider a sale of property that borders the proposed site of Taylor Creek Park to Dennis Murphy. The city had considered a sale in 1995 for $5,000 but rejected the proposal. Further action on this item is expected at their Oct. 15 meeting.
Third Avenue. Councilman Devin Maxwell said he has researched the improvement project for the past several weeks and felt the project was not in the city’s best interest. “There is concern on the affect on downtown businesses. The last project left a lot of buildings vacant,” he explained. Mr. Maxwell said signage for downtown should be required to alert motorists and offset some of the financial impacts of this project. Mr. Maxwell said plans for the project have been cut back. The cuts include landscaping, irrigation, improvements to 441, and in other areas. He explained the pages of plans have been significantly reduced. “My opinion is the scope has been reduced. The state denied that. The FDOT should have been more forthright in the beginning. There has never been an opportunity for the city to approve or disapprove anything. I don’t like these bare bones plans,” he added. Mr. Maxwell said he felt the city had been disregarded and were left with a simple thoroughfare. Councilman Dowling Watford said the city could register their displeasure with the process but questioned whether it was worth it to jeopardize not having the traffic flow and congestion the project would solve. City fathers agreed it was highly unlikely the state would not build the project due to the benefits for cross state travelers. They agree many local residents would support the project because traffic will move more quickly through the intersection. Mayor Jim Kirk said he didn’t want to create an adversarial relationship with the state. He admitted he felt the FDOT didn’t care if the city was happy with the project. Councilman Clayton Williams said he felt the state had treated Okeechobee as a ‘red-headed step child.’” The city would be obligated to pay $68,036 for crosswalks and $24,800 for the paint of mast arms. They would also be required to maintain the improvements into perpetuity. The agreement for the crosswalks was Okeechobee News/Charles Murphy approved unanimously. The city Okeechobee City Police Department Sergeant opted not to approve the paint- Phillip ‘Skip’ Eddings was honored by City Maying agreement for the mast arms. or Jim Kirk (right) for 10 years of service to the Patterned crosswalks would be department.
FATALITY Continued From Page 1 release. FHP Trooper B.K. Timmons stated in the release that Mr. Pearce was westbound on S.R. 78 just west of River Road when the SUV left the roadway. Mr. Pearce reportedly over-corrected to the left, then lost control
of the vehicle. The trooper stated the SUV rolled over several times and collided with a wooden fence. The vehicle came to rest on its right side, facing east. Mr. Pearce was not wearing a seat belt, stated the release, while Mr. Buckner was. Trooper Timmons estimated the SUV sustained damages totaling $10,000. The crash remains under investigation.

An Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue fire truck provided water so firefighters could wash down equipment worn by agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as they assisted in the execution of a search warrant Thursday morning on a home at 1742 Southwest 24th Avenue.
Okeechobee News/Eric Kopp
Investigators Thursday morning searched a Honda Odyssey mini-van parked in front of a home on Southwest 24th Avenue where an active methamphetamine lab was discovered and four people were arrested. Because the van could be directly linked to the alleged crime, it will likely be seized by the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.
METH Continued From Page 1
When the DEA agents entered the home, they found meth being cooked in the home’s kitchen, stated a task force detective. Arrested in the home were: Tracy Dan Cook, 44; Layla Nicole Huff, 20; Nicholas R. Seigfried Jr, 39; and Christine Mae Seigfried, 39. Each one of them was charged with the felonies of manufacture of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a church, child Nicholas R. abuse, possession of list- Seigfried ed chemicals and use of a dwelling to manufacture methamphetamine with a child under the age of 16 in the home. Huff ’s 30-month son was found in the home. After the woman’s arrest, the child was turned over Christine Mae to the Department of Chil- Seigfried dren and Families (DCF). The home is 193.5-feet from The Gathering Church. A task force detective said meth was being cooked in the home’s kitchen by using the “one pot” method. This method, which is one of the most dangerous, means meth cooks can make the drug in one sealed container. That container is generally flipped upside down to cause the reaction needed to turn several toxic ingredients into meth. The one-pot method generally produces meth in smaller quantities, but it’s no less dangerous. Investigators also found a Beretta rifle inside the home. While the caliber and age of the rifle were not known as of newspaper deadline, one detective said there is a possi-
bility the gun is stolen. OCSO Public Information Officer Michele Bell said three dogs were seized by Okeechobee County Animal Control. The dogs were outside the home. “There were some Tracy Dan cats inside the home, but Cook no one could go inside to get them,” she said, adding the felines probably all ran from the home because the outside doors remained opened while DEA agents were in the home. Because of the volatility of the chemicals used Layla Nicole to make meth, only DEA Huff agents—clad in hazmat suits, masks and gloves—went inside the home. Once they had finished their work all of the agents’ equipment was washed down by firefighters from Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue. Mrs. Bell said the DEA agents took all the meth found and will take it to their laboratory where it will be weighed and the purity will be checked. “Depending on the weight and purity, more charges may be added,” she continued. “The sheriff ’s office did a great job,” said Assistant State Attorney Ashley Albright. “This is one of the biggest meth busts that I know of in the county.” It was also not known as of newspaper deadline if the case would be prosecuted at the state or federal level. “As of right now,” said a task force detective, “it’s our baby.” The four suspects will have their first appearance hearing Friday and their bonds will be set at that time.

Main Street received state honor
Special to the Okeechobee News The Top of the Lake Art Fest, sponsored by Okeechobee Main Street, was honored by the State of Florida recently. Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced the recipients of the Secretary of State’s 2013 Florida Main Street Awards on Sept. 19, at the Florida Main Street 2013 Annual Conference held in Vilano Beach. “I am proud to recognize the activities and accomplishments of this year’s honorees,” said Secretary Detzner. “Their sincere focus on preservation and contributions to Main Street programs across the state are essential to the revitalization of Florida’s traditional commercial districts.” The secretary’s awards are based on the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Florida Main Street Awards Committee, which convened earlier to consider the applications received for 2013. The awards program encourages and acknowledges local Main Street program accomplishments that advance the goals of the Florida Main Street Program. Florida Main Street is a technical assistance program of the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, Bureau of Historic Preservation. The bureau conducts statewide programs aimed at identifying, evaluating, and preserving Florida’s historic resources. Main Street, with its emphasis on preservation, is an effective strategy for achieving these goals in Florida’s historic retail districts. Since 1985, the bureau has offered manager training, consultant team
visits, design and other technical assistance, as well as the benefit of experience gained by other Florida Main Street programs. The Top of the Lake Art Fest was among 24 programs honored for exceptional accomplishments within Florida Main Street communities.

Left to right are Sharie Turgeon, Ken Detzner, Bridgette Waldau at the Secretary of State’s 2013 Florida Main Street Awards on Sept. 19, at the Florida Main Street 2013 Annual Conference held in Vilano Beach.
Raye Deusinger, chairman of the Okeechobee Blood Roundup, was the guest speaker at a recent Kiwanis Club Of Okeechobee meeting. Deusinger was on hand to promote the Okeechobee 600 which is the theme of this years’ annual blood drive. Six hundred represents the number of units the roundup has set as their goal. They have fallen just short of that number the past few years. The drive will be held at the Freshman Campus Auditorium on Nov. 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be a “pre-drive” held at Gilbert Chevrolet, Gilbert Ford and Okeechobee Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram on Nov. 9. Units collected at the pre-drive will count toward the Blood Roundup goal.

Campgrounds and recreational areas remain open Corps of Engineers continues to operate recreational areas along the Okeechobee waterway
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, will continue full operations despite a lapse in federal funding at its recreation areas along the Okeechobee Waterway. This means corps-operated campgrounds and day-use areas will remain open and all reservations will be honored for as long as possible.
The corps is unique among federal agencies in that it is funded mostly through individual projects that may carry over funds from year to year. All Jacksonville District recreation areas have enough remaining funding for work to continue temporarily. If an appropriations bill isn’t passed, the district will reevaluate its remaining funds to determine which projects can continue to operate and for how long. “We are doing everything we can to allow public use of our campgrounds and recreation areas for as long as we can,” said Adam Tarplee, acting assistant chief of the South Florida Operations Office. “There are a lot of campers looking for a place to go
right now, and we want to let them know that we currently have camp sites available, especially at Ortona Campground. Campers must understand that at some point, we may also have to close our facilities on short notice.” The following campgrounds will remain open until further notice: • St. Lucie South Campground in Stuart, 772-287-1382; • Ortona South Campground near Moore Haven, 863-675-8400; and, • W.P. Franklin Campground North in Alva, 239-694-8770. The following recreation parks will remain open until further notice:
• Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail around the Herbert Hoover Dike; • Clewiston Visitor Center; • W.P. Franklin South Recreation Area in Alva; • St. Lucie Visitor Center and St. Lucie South Recreation Area in Stuart; and, • Ortona North Recreation Area in Moore Haven. Once Jacksonville District expends their remaining Fiscal Year 2013 budget funds, only staff essential to public health and safety, including lock and dam operations and emergency response readiness, and the staff essential to management of ongoing construction projects, will continue to work.
Having a Primary Care Provider is important, even if you are healthy
W
hen you are sick or need to see a doctor, you likely do not feel or act like your normal ‘healthy’ self. Whether you are experiencing fatigue, dizziness, nausea, or a host of other symptoms, your ability to thoroughly communicate about your condition and comprehend the doctor’s medical advice may be compromised. This is just one reason why it is beneficial to have an existing relationship with a Primary Care Provider, before you actually need one. Another benefit to having an existing relationship with a Primary Care Provider is having a baseline point of reference for your physical health (for example your weight, cholesterol & blood pressure). This knowledge, as well as you and your family’s medical history, can help promote an accurate diagnosis and help proactively monitor patients’ risk factors. Generally a patient’s overall comfort level and confidence in their physician is increased when the patient has an existing relationship with the physician. With this increased confidence, comes trust. When patients know and trust their physician (vs. meeting the physician for the first time when they are sick or need healthcare) patients can more easily and openly communicate ALL of their health and wellness concerns. Certainly patient outcomes benefit when physicians have the whole picture of their patient’s health. One of the reasons people give for not proactively seeing a doctor is their lack of time. If you think you are too busy to have your cholesterol levels checked, just imagine how your schedule will be affected if you suffer a heart attack? Another reason people give for not visiting a doctor annually is that they are worried about what the doctor, lab results or a screening may reveal. Ignorance is not bliss, when it comes
to your health. Studies have shown that early detection and treatment are critical to a successful outcome, whether the diagnosis is breast cancer, diabetes or heart disease. A very popular reason for many people
FAMILY MEDICINE
to avoid scheduling a wellness visit is uncertainty regarding the cost and how to pay for the visit. Yet, many insurances, as well as Medicare, often include an annual wellness visit in their benefits. Contact your insurance
provider to learn if annual wellness visits are included in your health plan. If you have a healthcare question or need help finding a doctor, Raulerson Hospital provides a free 24/7 ConsultA-Nurse hotline: 863-763-9228

SES celebrates Custodian’s Day
Church clubs enjoy airboat ride
National Custodian’s Day was celebrated at Seminole Elementary to honor their dedicated custodians. Center State Bank provided gift mugs full of delicious coffees and the students from Mrs. Sickels’ and Mrs. Mullens’ classes presented the hardworking custodians with a handmade appreciation banner and a scrumptious cake.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Discovery and Bible clubs of Okeechobee Missionary Baptist Church had a fun-filled morning riding in the airboat, feeding the animals, playing water balloon games and petting/holding a gator. On the airboat ride, Captain Steve taught them about God’s hand in nature. The clubs thank Eagle Bay Airboats, Ferrell’s Market, Captain Steve and Julie for hosting such a great morning for the children.

Most of the 16 counties in the district experienced above-average rainfall for the month. However, three counties on the east coast — Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade — ranged from 0.34 inches below average to 2.20 inches below average.
Key locations such as Water Conservation Areas 2 and 3 and Lake Okeechobee continue to experience high water levels. A total of 6.41 inches of rainfall was recorded directly over the lake and its immediate area, representing 114 percent of average in September, or 0.81 inches above average for the month. The lake stood at 15.91 feet NGVD Wednesday. This is 1.04 feet higher than its historic average for this date. Annual minimal regatta attracts 88 entries
The Adam Bryant Memorial Minimal Regatta, set for Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Scott Driver boat ramps, off State Road 78 at the Kissimmee River, has a record 88 boats entered, according to organizer J.D. Mixon of
the Okeechobee Kiwanis Club. Festivities start Friday evening with the boat check in and the Pre-Party, also at the Scott Driver ramps, from 4 to 10 p.m. The Pre-Party will include live entertainment,
give-aways every 30 minutes and boat creativity awards. A “surf and turf ” dinner will feature steak and shrimp. Boats are required to check in before 7 p.m. Tickets to the Pre-Party are $12 at the door. The homemade boat races will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and continue until afternoon. Last year’s minimal regatta had 70 entries and the races ended around 2 p.m. There is no charge for spectators and the public is invited to come out and watch the races. The regatta is in memory of Adam Bryant. Adam was a volunteer fireman, talented musician, and charming young man whose
life was shortened by a devastating spinal cord injury in November 2002. He survived the initial accident and worked to recover until his passing in June 2004. Despite his suffering, he maintained his unique sense of humor, bringing frequent smiles to those close to him. This event is meant to be fun and allow creativity which truly exemplifies Adam’s spirit. Proceeds from the event will fund a scholarship for an Okeechobee High School graduate to attend firefighter/EMS school and to help make an Okeechobee County playground more accessible and interactive for disabled children.

Yearling soccer team defeats Osceola, 6-1 By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News Yearling continued a long winning streak over Osceola with a 6-1 victory in middle school soccer action Wednesday at Osceola. Yearling continued to display strong defense and was able to take advantage of a couple of Warrior defensive breakdowns to win the match. Despite the lopsided score, the match was intense, and the skill level for both schools was very high. Yearling coach Erick Rios said Osceola has improved a lot over the past few years and was a tougher opponent this year. An earlier match between the schools was cancelled by rain and won’t be made up this year. Yearling displayed a strong passing game on offense as well as they got several oneon-one opportunities with the Warrior goal keeper.
Come see for yourself!
“I feel our skills are more refined. I also think the tactical position of our team is different and is a little more effective,” he added. Rios’ goal was to have his young team improve this year. Instead the team has been almost as dominant as usual as they have allowed only two goals all season. He also praised his goal keeper who played physical soccer and isn’t afraid of contact. “We wanted a shutout today, but it is still a win so were happy with that,” he added. Alejandro Bucio has the only goal for the Warriors. Lazaro Nun’ez and Johnny Tijerina had two goals apiece, and Javier Hernandez and Brian Pin’on added one goal for the Bulls. Hernan Rayo, Brian Leal, Pin’on and Hernandez had assists. Yearling also had a strong match on Monday as they walloped Oslo, 8-0 in Vero Beach. Nunez had two goals while Leal, Carlos Herrera, Raya, Tijerina, Hernandez and Pin’on all had one goal in the match.

YMS volleyballers top OMS; sweep ‘13 series By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News Yearling overcame a stubborn Osceola volleyball squad 25-15 and 25-15 to sweep the season series between the two schools in middle school action Wednesday at Osceola. Megan Hargraves had eight aces, two kills and 13 digs. Rachel Bryan had three aces, eight kills and 12 digs for Yearling, (8-1). Osceola fell to (7-3). Osceola was able to match the Lady Bulls point-for-point in the first game until Hargraves stepped to the service line with the score (12-9), she ran off eight consecutive points to give YMS a 20-10 lead. Aces by Tori Garcia and Mallorie Thomas finished off the first game for YMS. Osceola got a service ace from Kassie Weldon in the first game. Several of the points were long volleys. The second game was a similar scenario. Osceola trailed only 6-4 after a kill by Bryan, but Stephanie Ruiz had a huge run of serves,
including an ace, to build a 14-6 lead. Bryan added an ace and a kill, Thomas an ace and Osceola made two crucial faults on serve to help close out the match for Yearling. YMS coach Kellyann Campbell said the team played consistently, covered the court, and passed the ball well. She said the team was a little slower than she would like. Campbell said Osceola is always a key opponent on the schedule and the girls were ready to play them. “You never know what will happen until the start of the game. My team was focused a lot on the match with Brighton and that is what we’ve been working for,” she added. Campbell admitted the long service runs in each game played a key role for the Lady Bulls. She said the team practices serves daily because they are an important part of the game. “Serves are your biggest winner. If you miss a serve you give your opponent a point and our main focus is to get the serves over,” she added.
Campbell said her team won’t have to be motivated to play Pemayetv Emahakv who defeated Yearling earlier this year. Ruiz said the team could have done better but they were glad to get to win. “The win is really good for us. Some of us weren’t on our best game as we made mistakes on serve.” Ruiz said the key to her serves is not trying to over hit or kill the ball. She said her goal is to get the ball over the net. She said
she was impressed with how the Warriors played. “I think they worked hard. Once they got used to our height and our players, they tried their best to beat us,” she added. Osceola played a strong match with Pemayetv Emahakv on Tuesday as they fell at the reservation, 25-19 and 25-23. Coach Lauren Throop said her girls played hard and have really improved as the year has progressed.
