Microphone Array Impulse Response (MAIR) Library for Spatial Audio Research Hyunkook Lee and Connor Millns
[email protected] Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) University of Huddersfield, UK
MAIR Library and Renderer • An extensive library of room impulse responses captured in a reverberant concert hall using 41 different microphone configurations for 13 source positions. • The MAIR Library and Renderer can be used for – A quick creation of multichannel acoustic recordings for spatial audio experiments. – A virtual mic array recording for DAW outputs. – A spatial ear training for comparing different spatial characteristics.
MAIR Recording Venue • St. Paul’s Concert Hall, Huddersfield, UK. – Average reverb time: 2.1s – Church converted hall. – High ceiling.
Equipment and Method • Microphones: Neumann digital kk series - Cardioid (kk184), Fig-8 (kk120), Omni (kk133), Hypercardioid (kk185)
• Loudspeakers: Genelec 8040A and 1029A.
• Interfaces: Neumann DMI-8 and Merging HAPI.
• Impulse response acquisition – Using the HAART multichannel RIR measurement tool. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/24579/ – Exponential Sine Sweep method.

Microphone Techniques • Main Arrays – 2ch: XY130, AB50, ORTF, Dummy head (KU100) – 3ch: Decca Tree, Fukada Tree – 4ch: ESMA25, ESMA50, FOA (Ambeo) – 5ch: 3 configurations of PCMA, ICA, OCTinspired, 2L-inspired – 9 configurations of 4ch height mic square with various heights, polar patterns and directions.
• Ambience Arrays – 15 configurations of 4ch Hamasaki-Square with various heights, polar patterns and directions
• 360° Arrays – FOA, ESMA25, ESMA50 with height mics.
MAIR Renderer • Multichannel convolution and binauralisation – Enables the auralisation of the microphone arrays with dry sound sources, for binaural and up to 9ch loudspeaker playbacks. – Uses multiconvolve object from HISS tool for efficient and fast convolution. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/14897/ – Allows simultaneous comparisons between the microphone arrays. – Takes DAW output signals and maps them to 13 loudspeaker positions.
