Adobe® InDesign® CS5 How-to guide

Multistate objects: One page item, many versions You can use the Object States panel in InDesign CS5 to create multiple versions, or states, of an object on a page. Only one state is visible on the page at a time. For example, you can create a slide show that lets the user view each image in an exported SWF file. When you print the file or export it to PDF, only the active state appears.

Each state is a separate object or group of objects.

Step 1: To create a SWF slide show, stack separate images on top of one another, select them all, and click the Convert Selection To Multi-State Object button. Adobe Systems Incorporated 345 Park Avenue San Jose, CA 95110-2704 USA

Step 2: Viewers of the SWF file need a way to change the state of the object. New actions in InDesign® CS5 make it easy to create interactive buttons that navigate inside any multistate object on the spread.

Step 3: To make the multistate object interactive, export it as a SWF file. You can then import the SWF into an InDesign document and export it as a PDF file. If you are using Acrobat 9 or later, you can view the change in images by clicking the buttons to the right.
