CONTEXT
SET-UP STRATEGIES TO EXPLOIT SENSOR DATA
Apathy is a syndrome common in many prefrontal pathologies.

It is used to be defined as “a loss of motivation non attributable to an emotional or a cognitive disorder”, and is actually diagnosed through clinical scales carried out by the patient and his relatives. But apathy has now been increasingly defined in a more observational/behaviorist way as a « quantitative reduction of goaldirected behaviours » (Levy R, Dubois B - Apathy and the prefrontal cortex-basal ganglia circuits - Cereb Cortex 2006).

OBJECTIVES ² Evaluate apathy through an original and observational method with objective markers which could reflect a reduction of goal-directed behaviors.

ECOCAPTURE – CONCEPT ECOCAPTURE is a behaviorist method providing quantitative and qualitative evaluation of apathy in a short-time, near real-life situation. It consists in a short scenario taking place in a common room equipped with video and sensor based-system.
A preliminary sensor metrics screening:
Sensor metrics were classified into 4 categories : 1- Metrics sensitive & specific of physical activities & posture shifts 2- Metrics sensitive & specific of an energy expenditure 3- Metrics sensitive but not specific of anything 4- Metrics wrongly sensitive or specific of something. Therefore, only the first two categories were considered during the sensor data exploitation. The screening was made by analysing each metrics’ results and by knowing how they were evaluated by the sensor.

3 types of data are evaluated : - Neuropsychological data - Video data - Sensor data The preliminary phase has revealed that ECOCAPTURE method was able to distinguish the two groups of people who took part in the experiment. The distinction was able to be made by considering only video data metrics. The objective now is to strengthen video-based assessment of apathy by considering also sensor data (and maybe discover several different forms of apathy).
ECOCAPTURE – SENSOR USED A physical activity sensor (Move II, ®MOVISENS) The sensor records raw data such as 3D movement acceleration, body inclinations, barometric pressure and temperature. From these data, secondary parameters like activity class, body position, number of steps, energy expenditures, metabolic equivalents (MET) are evaluated. ECOCAPTURE was applied in a preliminary phase (In 2015) to a group of patients with Fronto-Temporal Lobar Degeneration (bvFTLD) matched to healthy participants (n=12).

CONCLUSION ² Within a couple of minutes, ECOCAPTURE method is able to distinguish, through an original method, a group of apathetic participants and a group of healthy ones with video assessment, strengthened by the exploitation of sensitive & specific sensor metrics on short-time windows, which are objective markers. ² Further sensor data exploitations (inclusion of eye-tracking glasses in the scenario to exploit new metrics, use of information fusion algorithms to combine information, new short-time scales, etc..) could also help to discover several different forms of apathy. ² ECOCAPTURE method will be applied to a wide cohort of participants (n=120) beginning in Sept 17.
