LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to another year of Geek.Kon! Once again, we provide you with three days of magic, from our massive gaming rooms to informative panels to live music to the sense of camaraderie and fun that only happens when hundreds of geeks descend on one hotel.

Our theme for this year is “Geekdom is Magic” and contrary to what you may believe, it is not a shameless attempt to latch onto that one show with all the pretty ponies. Not that we are anti‐pony; anyone familiar with the inner dealings of the convention knows that we've had a thing for ponies since before it was cool. But this year is about celebrating magic. For starters, magic is inherent in every fandom, from the mages of Final Fantasy to the magical schoolgirls of anime to casting magic missile at the darkness. It binds us all.

It's also about the many times your convention experience feels like magic. When you see that costume in the masquerade and think it had to be constructed through sorcery. When you wonder what spell is over you and the entire room when you all shout the same callback during Rocky. Even that feeling you get when you and several like‐minded individuals are able to block out the rest of the world and spend a weekend indulging in your fandom. These shared experiences represent what we mean when we say “Geekdom is Magic.” It may seem like Geek.Kon magically appears here every year, then vanishes like a turtle descending into the sea. In truth, it is due to the hard work of a dedicated staff, who work on this convention year‐round. By all means, thank them for their tireless work, but the best thing you can do is enjoy the convention to its fullest. That's what we do it for. Experience as much as you can in these three days and see what kinds of fun you can conjure up. Adam Pulver Geek.Kon.2012 Chairman

WELCOME TO GEEK.KON!

WHAT DID YOU THINK?

Geek.Kon always wants to know what you thought of the convention, what you enjoy most, and what we can do to improve. Your suggestions have led to several new events and improved operations of existing ones.

POST CON Q&A

Wisconsin Room Sunday, 4:00 – 5:00 pm

There are several ways to leave feedback. Surveys will be available on Sunday in the staff room and following Closing Ceremonies. Friendly staff members may be handing out surveys as well. Please make sure to be honest and thorough. There is also a Post‐ Convention Q&A session following Closing Ceremonies where you can talk to staff members and leave feedback. We're also always looking for more staff members to help organize and operate the convention. Geek.Kon is a collaborative effort and we're always open to new ways to make things run smoother and better. If you're interested in joining staff, stop by the staff room and ask for details!

HEARING WEDDING BELLS?

The Marriott is an excellent facility, and sometimes that means we have to share with others. At times throughout the weekend, part of the hotel will be off limits to attendees in order to host a wedding and subsequent reception. The Atrium area will be unavailable for parts of Friday evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. The boffer room (Salon Ballroom A‐C) and a part of tabletop gaming (Salon Ballroom D) will be closed all day Saturday. Any photoshoots during that time will be asked to use either the patio area next to the swimming pool or the large space near the Geneva room. In order to satiate your desire to hit people with stuff, the Geneva room will feature open boffer on Saturday morning until 10:00 am.

Please respect the wedding guests and their space. We thank you for your courtesy and understanding, and Geek.Kon extends its congratulations to Matt and Heather!

MIXER

Once again, Geek.Kon will close out Saturday with some "well‐mannered" frivolity. DJ Scottaconda will make his fifth Geek.Kon appearance. Joining him this year will be Mendota Room Saturday, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am DJ Kade, making his first Geek.Kon appearance after spinning for several conventions around the region.

MIXER

DJ SCOTTACONDA

DJ Scottaconda is making his return to Geek.Kon! He has been DJing since Geek.Kon's 2nd year and always looks forward to the next. A resident DJ for several conventions throughout the Midwest and having DJ'd at several venues in the Chicagoland area, he is most known for his DJ sets at Anime Central's Soap Bubble. His love for music and conventions make him strive to throw down the best and hardest‐hitting tracks to do away with the stereotype that geeks have no sense of rhythm, they can't dance, and have no social life. DJ Scottaconda is helping to turn the tables on when being called a "geek" was degrading. "I remember when I was called a geek and it was used in a teasing manner. Now I hear the word geek as it is used with a sense of pride with a hint of sexy. Geek is such a huge part of popular culture now and I can't help but feel as if I have triumphed over a huge obstacle. I started with only hopes, dreams and fears. Now I have worked my way up to center stage where the naysayers are now looking up at me and can't even come close to touching me."

DJ KADE

DJ Kade made his debut convention appearance at Kitsune Kon's first ever con in 2011, laying down a set that earned him an invitation to become Kitsune's resident DJ / dance coordinator. Besides sharing his love of EDM music through DJing, but he also contributes to other aspects of convention dances. Not only did he appear for a short set at Anime Milwaukee this year, but he also operated the lighting equipment at No Brand Con and contributed visuals / VJ‐ing to Anime Centrals 'Hardcore Synergy' dance. His style is of a distinctly nerdy and Japanese background, and he incorporates memorable anime and game tunes/remixes whenever he can. His aspirations are to eventually branch out into making his own tracks, and to incorporate his various sound and light skills into one cohesive whole. But until that happens, DJ Kade will most likely be rocking a convention floor near you sometime soon...

At the show you may present your talents and it is a perfect substitute for a sketch you could not do for the Masquerade. All acts are welcome, no matter how geeky it is.

If you have not already signed up online, fill out a submission form at the registration window. Acts should be 6 minutes or shorter. Exceptions will be considered on a case‐by‐case basis. We will provide mics and can play your audio if submitted on CD or USB drive.

We will not allow stage fighting, weapons demonstrations, or anything that could endanger yourself or others. Entries must be rated PG‐13 or better. If you have any questions about the content of your entry, please contact a staff member and ask for the Geek Show coordinator.

Plan to arrive 10 minutes before the show to check in with the Geek Show coordinator and test your audio.

KON.QUEST

JOIN GEEK.KON'S THIRD ANNUAL KON.QUEST! SOLVE PUZZLES ‐ FIGHT MONSTERS ‐ DRAW PICTURES PLAY GAMES ‐ TRADE CARDS ‐ WIN PRIZES

WHAT'S THIS, THEN?

KON.QUEST

Monona Room FRI: 6:30 pm – 11:00 pm SAT: 10:00 am – 10:00 pm

Unique to Geek.Kon, Kon.Quest is a special event with something for every Geek.Kon attendee. Whether you're alone or with a group of friends, and whether you have 15 free minutes or all day, stop on by, choose a character class (catgirl, android, elven bard, or 8‐bit hero) and check us out!

Kon.Quest consists of 36 separate challenges, each of which takes about 10‐15 minutes. You (and your group) can come and go as you please, doing challenges whenever they fit into your convention schedule. Each time you successfully complete a challenge, you'll be rewarded with loot cards to use in future challenges.

WHAT ARE THESE CHALLENGES LIKE?

The challenges are split among 6 different stations, each with a different theme. There's the Fighters' Guild, where your party will face a series of combat challenges that require quick strategic decision‐making and reaction time. The logic and word puzzles of the Water Temple will work your left brain while the art and roleplaying challenges of the Osaka High Art and Drama Club work the right. At the Cantina you'll find a number of quick games of chance and skill to play, and #TriviaChannel will prove a true test of your acquired geek knowledge. Lastly, the Kon.Monster Arena is home to our own miniature trading card game, Kon.Monsters!

WHAT'S THE GOAL?

So glad you asked! Among the various loot cards in Kon.Quest are 30 superpowerful magical artifacts. Your mission is to obtain as many of these 30 as you can. When the event ends at 10:00 PM on Saturday, we'll give awards to the players with the top scores and have a prize drawing where each artifact you find gives you a single entry. Winners will receive "Geek Gil" (usable as money in the dealer's room) or free preregistration to next year's Kon!

The first 25 players in line when we open on Friday will receive a Holy Grail artifact, not obtainable in any other way. Hope to see you at the Quest!

VIDEO GAMING VIDEO GAMING

Superior Room Opens: Friday, 12:00 pm Closes: Sunday, 4:00 pm

Prepare yourself to enter the largest video game room in the Midwest! Geek.Kon offers a gamers’ mecca of almost 10,000 square feet of over 40 tables of consoles and a dozen free‐play arcade machines, round‐the‐clock tournaments and a 24‐hour Rock Band stage.

Please be respectful of the equipment. Most of it is being borrowed in good faith from Geek.Kon staff and attendees who would like it back in the same condition as they left it. Losing or damaging controllers, consoles, peripherals and games would betray their trust in us, and harm our ability to provide the best experience possible next year.

ROCK BAND STAGE

Rock Band 3 will be set up on the main video game room stage for free play around the clock. The only exception to this fantastically open rule is during previously‐scheduled Rock Band Tournaments. There are only 3 of these; otherwise, rock out with…well, just rock out.

(For a non‐refundable fee of $2, we will download any song we don’t have onto the Xbox being used for Rock Band. These will then be free for anyone to play during the weekend, and will be allowed for tournament use in tournaments by anyone. If wanted for a tournament please check with us first to see if there is time to get it before the tournament.)

VIDEO GAME LIBRARY

Speak to one of our specially trained librarians to check out video games and peripherals for all of your gaming needs! Most modern consoles with wireless controllers (Wii, Xbox360, and PS3) as well as games for those consoles require you to check in your badge at the command center by the main entrance. You may check out ONE GAME and ONE CONTROLLER at most PER BADGE.

PORTABLE MEETUP AREA

New this year, we are going to have a PSP/DS meet‐up area. We will have tables, chairs and chargers set up for you to play with friends and charge your portable gaming system. The Pokémon, Phantasy Star portable, Warhammer, and other tournaments will be held in this area. TBA after sign ups.

VIDEO GAME TOURNAMENTS

Geek.Kon continues its proud tradition of a professional competitive experience at our many tournaments. We are intensely interested in not frustrating you. All of our tournaments have detailed rules available in the video game room. A full tournament listing is available on the next page of this guide. There may be additional unscheduled events, check with the staff table for info.
