ecently, Pirelli unveiled its 1,500 square meter industrial d e s i g n flagship store in Milan, the Pirelli Corso Venezia. Offering patrons a fascinating glimpse into some of the bi-products of a longstanding legacy of culture, industrial design and technology, the store is an interactive showcase of the innovation at the foundation of the Pirelli name. Addressing the crowd at the store’s opening on September 20th, Pirelli Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera explained how the relaunch of Pirelli’s industrial design brand PZero in 2002 acknowledged the brand’s roots in fashion and industry. Esteemed guests such as Naomi Campbell and Eva 3 Herzigova listened as Mr. Provera relayed how PZero “has reached an important juncture with the opening of this home for our “rubber soul”, a physical space which makes tangible the creativity, experimentation and capacity for innovation that characterizes all Pirelli products.”

rom sneakers to skateboards, the collection on display is an expansive and intriguing culmination of Pirelli’s exploration of the fashionable and the functional. For instance, with the groundbreaking introduction of bespoke sports footwear, PZero sneakers are not only customizable to every customer’s shape and preferred color range, they are fitted out with the same revolutionary grip used on F1 tracks. The Corso Venezia store itself is a living monument to Pirelli’s history of technology and performance, offering guests a chance to walk into a life-sized MIRS (Modular Integrated Robotized System) that can be found in the perfected balance of the Pirelli tire tread. As guests enter, they are invited to walk down a plush tire tread red carpet and experience an anechoic wall that is completely sound proofed. Complete with classic canvas airbeds, the fitting rooms are both historic and modern, as is the robotized stockroom, which mechanically selects items to be delivered to the customer on a conveyor belt. In keeping with Pirelli’s philosophy of environmental sustainability across all its sectors, the Corso Venezia Store has been developed to take advantage of state-of-the-art materials and processes to minimize environmental impact. Continuing the Pirelli tradition of setting the standard for technology, performance, architecture and design, the Pirelli Corso Venezia store is at the intersection of Piazza San Babila and Corso Venezia in Milan and is now open to the general public.

epressing the accelerator in the 8.4 liter, 600bhp Dodge Viper SRT10 is a mind-bending experience. Numbers don’t lie, and the sub-4 second 0-60 times and 11.7 second ¼ mile performance of the Viper SRT10 are but two indicators that Dodge got it right the first time out. However, Dodge’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) Team wanted to up the ante, and created the barely street-legal Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer), a car purpose built for the enthusiast set. Where the Viper SRT10 delivers outrageous speed, the Viper SRT10 ACR is ludicrous – completely plaid. SRT created the ACR package for diehard Viper and track enthusiasts, providing them a street-legal competition car they can drive to the racetrack (instead of the car being trailered), run the ACR at speed on the track, and then drive home –all in a showroom-ready car. The Viper SRT10 ACR seemed an ideal car with which to tackle a Targa – and that’s precisely what the Chrysler Group’s SRT and Motorsports President and CEO/Senior VP of Design Ralph Gilles and his SRT Team did this past September at the Targa Newfoundland when they campaigned three SRT vehicles in the five-day rally. An avid car enthusiast who enjoys spending time at the track, go-karting and watching Formula 1 auto racing, Gilles has participated in both the Targa Newfoundland Rally and the Car and Driver One Lap of America. In addition, he has frequently served as a judge at Pebble Beach, Meadow Brook and Cranbrook Concours events, along with the EyesOn Design Car Show. 2011 was Gilles’ fourth Targa, and the three-car SRT Team featured the Gilles/Horsey Pirelli-sponsored Viper ACR, as well as the Pacione/Maxwell Challenger SRT8 392 and the Notaras/Chambers Challenger SRT8 392. Held over five days in September in Newfoundland Canada – the Targa is legendary for its unpredictable weather. Gilles was one of 200 competitors from as far away as Turks & Caicos and Australia who braved the event – one of only three remaining Targas worldwide (Targa Tasmania and Targa New Zealand are the others). This year, the cold 45° F mornings made way to warm and sunny 75° days before nasty winds and torrential rains enveloped the area thanks to the remnants of hurricane Maria. “I have done the event 3 times prior,” said Gilles. “We have always run SRT’s as they need very little preparation to be competitive.” This year, Gilles campaigned a 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires, battling through stage roads that ranged from fresh and smooth tarmac to gravel – and fought through extremely unpredictable weather. His choice of vehicle is impressive considering the types of cars normally raced at the Targa. “Although (Targa Newfoundland) attracts an interesting variety of race cars, it is typically dominated by all-wheel-drive Subaru WRX’s, Mitsubishi EVO’s, Mini Cooper S’s and Porsche 911’s,” Gilles explained. Running a low-slung Viper ACR on the varied, and sometimes harsh, road surfaces of the Newfoundland coast presented several challenges for the team – but all were overcome

by minor adjustments to the stock car, including the fitment of non-stock P Zero tires. “To prepare, we simply raised the car as much as we could using the stock ACR coilovers, fashioned a 1/4 inch MOTORSPORT NEWS thick aluminum skid plate and fitted it with a roll cage and race seats,” added Gilles. “In the end many Targa veterans will tell you tires are everything. You need a great performance tire that can handle just about anything!” Gilles chose Pirelli’s P Zero for the Viper ACR based on the tire’s overall performance abilities and its position as the reference ultrahigh-performance tire in its segment. “As an enthusiast and amateur racer I am very sensitive to a performance tire’s effect on a vehicle’s performance, feel, predictability and most importantly, character. These diverse surfaces proved to be a great evaluation run and gave me some good insights into the performance envelope of the new P Zero.” The Pirellis performed admirably - especially at low temperatures, which is often a challenge for performance tires. “I was also very pleased with the tire’s ability to shed heavy water even at high speeds,” Gilles said. “The new Pirellis have a progressive nature to them and do not surprise you at the limit. This came in handy as the 2008 Viper has no traction control or other driver’s aids except for ABS brakes. That said, the limits are very, very high.” Gilles and his co-driver earned first-place in Group 8 and a third-place overall finish in the rally’s Modern Class in their specially prepared Viper ACR fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires. Gilles and Horsey’s performance also contributed to the SRT Team’s winning of the 2011 Sirius Satellite President’s Manufacturers’ Challenge, where they placed first among all the factory teams. Not only did Gilles’ SRT Team perform admirably on the track, but off as well, having raised $26,000 for the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. The money raised from the team’s participation this year will go towards providing services and assistance for families affected by autism.

pirelli to supply 17” diablo superbike tires to world superbike championship starting in 2013

B

eginning in the 2013 racing season, Pirelli will supply the World Superbike Championship series with 17” Diablo Superbike tires to replace the current 16.5” fitments. This radical option will allow Pirelli to remain even closer to its philosophy of “Race=Road”. This unique approach brings product developed by competition and its continuous transferring of solutions from the racing environment into the hands of roadgoing products for motorcyclists. Pirelli develops its reference product through technologies and advances learned from its highest-level production series: the World Superbike Championship – for which Pirelli is the sole supplier. Pirelli’s 16.5” Diablo Superbike tires are currently utilized in the Superbike World Championship, World Endurance, BSB and CIV which have been the reference series to date. Until 2004, the unique supplier agreement did not exist in the Superbike World Championship so Pirelli adapted its tires to the sizes offered by other suppliers. Pirelli’s choice to move to 17” tires in WSBK in 2013 has already seen success in other local Superbike championships such as those in New Zealand, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Canada, Malaysia and others. Pirelli’s new 17” slick tire is the optimal solution for riders seeking top performance without having to modify the chassis or wheels of their motorcycles.

The Superbike World Championship, of which Pirelli is sole supplier, remains the heart of development for the new Diablo SBK 17” slick, a size that is now more and more demanded by the market, thus remaining faithful to its motto “We sell what we race”. Pirelli continues to offer riders in America and around the world the highest quality products developed with the help of the great Superbike champions at the world’s best tracks – such as Miller Motorsports Park, home of the World Superbike Championship USA. WSBK action returns to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, in 2012.

Over the past three years, Pirelli has greatly accelerated its tire development to meet end users’ needs and the power delivered by new bikes. In 2009, Pirelli introduced the new 190/60R17 size; in 2010 it introduced a new high modulus carcass (Pirelli Patent). Compared to the 16.5” slick, the 17” tire offers a thicker tread for better handling and consistency. Its footprint in mid to full lean is roughly 10% wider due to a higher profile and a frame able to endure more side force. These features will be beneficial to riders seeking the ultimate in motorcycle performance.

INDIA F1 PREVIEW yellow and silver tires on a green track

Pirelli F1 makes its way to the India GP this week for racing on the recently-constructed Buddh International Circuit.  Neither the F1 teams nor Pirelli have experienced the track before, making it brand new territory for all involved and the perfect venue to run Pirelli’s official nominated tires – the P Zero Yellow soft tire (primary) and the P Zero Silver (option) – a hard compound tire making its final appearance of the season. Contrary to convention, the softer tire has been nominated as the prime choice in India with the harder tire as the option. This means that the teams will have more of the softer tires than the harder tires at their disposal during free practice on Friday: the first opportunity that the teams will have to run on the 3.19-mile track. In addition the teams will also get an extra set of soft tires on Friday, allowing them to maximize their running and provide Pirelli with some valuable data for upcoming races. Collecting as much data as possible prior to qualifying and the race will be a priority for everybody; the track is likely to be ‘green’ and slippery as it has never been used before. Just as was the case at the last race in Korea, there is likely to be considerable circuit evolution over the course of the weekend as more rubber gets laid down and the amount of grip changes. This effect is also caused by the new track surface cleaning, before the oils in the bitumen dissipate and the asphalt begins to age. One of the highlights of the clockwise Buddh circuit is Turns 10 “But we’ve structured the allocation in such a way that we think and 11: similar in its characteristics to the famous Turn 8 in Turkey. the teams will run more on the softer tires, particularly because we It is fast and long, putting a lot of lateral energy through the tires, are bringing an extra set of soft compound tires for Friday. This but unlike Turkey’s Turn 8 it tightens rather than opens. will help us to make some decisions about our strategy for next “We’ve opted for a deliberately conservative nomination in year, particularly after we saw the excellent durability of the softer selecting the hard tire alongside the soft, simply because on a brand compounds. It’s too early to talk about the number of pit stops we new circuit you are never quite sure of the exact race conditions you expect this weekend, but we anticipate a reasonably significant lap will encounter,” said Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s Motorsport Director. time difference between the two compounds. ” “This is going to be one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar. The texture of the tarmac is smooth compared to [other] circuts. The long pit lane will play a part in strategy as well with teams trying to get through the race with as few stops as possible. Overall it will be a great challenge for the tires and it’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.” – Narain Karthekiyan (Hispania Racing Team)

The simulation data for the Buddh International Circuit, which has 16 corners, suggests a lap time in the region of 1m27s. Average speed will be approximately 130mph, and cars will reach nearly 200mph on the main straight, which is currently the longest at just over .6 of a mile long.

The circuit contains a number of elevation changes, increasing the vertical energy that is put through the tires. The entry to the corners tends to be wide in order to promote overtaking, with Turns 10 and 11 being one of the key places for passing, overlooked by a 13,000-capacity series of grandstands.

The pit lane is one of the longest in Formula One. At over 1969 feet, it will increase the time spent in the pits and therefore influence the race strategy. The race is scheduled for 60 laps, with a compromise medium downforce set-up needed. The weather should be warm and dry, in the region of 86° Fahrenheit.

1957 Mercedes 300SL “Gullwing” “This pristine German wonder car has gone through a subtle, but significant customization process for the BASF Corporation,” said Chip Foose. “Most noticeably, the front and rear bumpers were removed, stored and replaced by custom fabricated units artfully redesigned into slimmer, more elegant pieces fit neatly against the body. A slight modification to the signature rear bulge above the rear wheel house brings it in line with that in the front. Minor modification to the grille and its shell brings focus on the elegant opening of the stock version. The nose emblem was removed along with the rear markers and all bodywork was smoothed. New side trim, hand crafted from brass stock was machined, milled, filed and polished before being chrome plated. New headlight bezels have been machined out of billet aluminum and carefully fit to the front fenders, which were massaged for a seamless blend of fender to chrome ring. New headlights give the car a clean European look. The two-tone paint job features BASF Waterborne material and combines upper charcoal silver and lower bright silver separated by an interior matching red accent line. A custom suspension gives the Gullwing just the right ride height and accentuates the custom Foose Wheels shod in Pirelli P Zero Nero tires. The Foose Gullwing will be unveiled in the BASF Booth #21458 at 3:00PM Tuesday.”

Pirelli Canada Chimes In A recent technical look at tire called “Keep the pressure on tires to save fuel” penned by Jil McIntosh, an award-winning auto journalist, relied on technical advice from Orazio Mastracchio quality product manager for Canada at Pirelli Tire. McIntosh is respected as a writer who can explain technical matters in ways consumers can relate to. In order to get the background she needs to produce her weekly series of auto section articles, McIntosh seeks out experts who understand the need for straightforward information. She appreciates professionals who can explain jargon, and provide real-world advice. Often, she turns to Pirelli for that input. Jil McIntosh is not alone among Canadian journalists in seeking help from Pirelli. The company has been energetic in working with journalists to meet their goals by providing meaningful news releases, promptly returning requests for information and staying close to the writing profession by supporting AJAC, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. AJAC annually presents a series of awards to its members and Pirelli has long been a presenter via its Pirelli Photography Awards. Seen as a world leader in photography for its famous Calendar as well as other film and photography projects, the fit with the Awards is a natural one. Each year, at the AJACs Awards event, Pirelli takes center stage. In addition Pirelli annually sponsors a special reception that precedes the awards presentation, providing the company an opportunity to host and mingle with Canada’s top automotive writers along with representatives of Canada’s OEMs at AJAC’s once-a-year TestFest Week. Continuing communication that also allows qualified journalists to road test Pirelli products has led to a strong awareness of the Pirelli brand. The goal is to make Pirelli the ‘go-to’ source for tire information and quotes. Jil McIntosh’ tire story, which appeared in editions of high circulation Metro newspaper right across the country, is one of the many positive results of the program.
