Startup Process Modeling —   A 6­weeks Student­Entrepreneur Collaboration Experience  Prof. Dr. Marcus Birkenkrahe ­ ​ msb@hwr­berlin.de​  ­ ​ https://www.linkedin.com/in/birkenkrahe     Since  2013,  undergraduate  students  develop process models for startups of the incubator at  the  Berlin  School  of  Economics  and  Law  (BSEL).  The  students  come  from  a  program  developed  and  run in cooperation with Siemens (i.e. they are currently under contract  there).  The  startups  are  self­selected.  They   are  briefed  and  consulted  by  the   lecturer  to  identify  suitable processes.   What processes are you talking about?  ● ● ● ● ●

User  ​ Onboarding  for  an  event­organizing  app  after   the  startup  realized  that  the  conversion rate of viewers­to­users is very low (but does not know why).  Internationalization​  process for a startup developing an app with a global appeal.  Installation​  process for customers of software for VR glasses.  Process ideas to establish complete transaction ​ transparency​  for users.  Application​  process for users of an e­commerce portal solution. 

What are the benefits for the startups (= clients)?  1) Startups can use the process models to get a quick, systematic, accurate ​ overview  of their processes ­ e.g. to solve problems or discuss processes with investors,  experts or developers.  2) Process models can be used to ​ improve​  processes over a longer period of time.  They can be maintained by the startups after the modeling project.  3) The project itself provides external ​ feedback​  (from students and from the lecturer)  focused on the process perspective (“will this work?” ­ “how could it work (better)?”)  4) There are various ​ by­products​  of the project, including: video prototypes,  animations, scenarios that the startups can use (e.g. for marketing purposes).  What are the benefits for the students (= consultants)?  1) Exposure to ​ real​  startups in a (critical) phase of their development as companies ­  especially useful for these Siemens students, who are used to a different ​ culture​ .  2) Students learn how to purposefully apply both modeling ​ standards​  (BPMN) and  non­standard, ​ creative​  methods (video, animation, scenario, storytelling) in concert.   3) Students have to solve hard, time­critical, complex problems in a concrete context  and deliver real results using an ​ agile​  project management methodology (Scrum).  How does it work?  1) 2) 3) 4) 5)  

Self­selection, briefing and process selection by startups with lecturer.  Students learn different methods in class & apply them to their startup process.  Project kick­off startups + students beginning self­organized Scrum process.  Sprint review(s) presenting model prototypes and preliminary results (3 weeks).  Final presentation to clients & handover of results (6 weeks).
