History Of Hypnosis In some ways, talking about the history of hypnosis is a bit like talking about the history of thinking or the history of breathing. Hypnosis is a universal human trait, so its history is the history of humanity itself. We might think of hypnotherapy - the use of hypnosis for healing or therapeutic purposes - as a very recent development, but its roots stretch deep into the past. Ancient Chinese, Hindu and Egyptian texts all mention healing procedures that are hypnotic inductions by any other name. That said, it's interesting to examine the development of hypnotherapy as a profession, as it shows an increasingly sophisticated understanding of what hypnosis is, and what it can be used for. The modern era really begins with the Austrian physician Franz Mesmer (1734-1815). Indeed, for a very long time hypnosis was known as "mesmerism", a word that's still in use today. Mesmer worked with psychiatric patients, and achieved remarkable results. Perhaps his most famous case was that of Miss Paradis, a concert pianist who suffered from a psychosomatic vision disorder - "hysterical blindness" in 18th century parlance. Mesmer worked with Miss Paradis for days on end, inducing trance with his "mesmeric pass", an extraordinarily complex and lengthy set of hand movements across the body, and by encouraging her to follow the movements of a stick reflected in a mirror. With admirable dedication and persistence, he retrained her to perceive motion and distinguish colour, and to endure daylight. The story didn't end happily, as Miss Paradis' parents demanded the return of their daughter, on the grounds that her pension would be stopped if she recovered! Her blindness returned once she was back in the bosom of her loving family, and Mesmer was denounced as a charlatan and a quack. Mesmer had always been a controversial figure, and was dogged by accusations of fraud for the rest of his life. Of course, from our perspective, his theories do sound like quackery - he believed that he achieved results by recharging his patients' magnetic field with his own "animal magnetism", which he was able to transmit across the ether with the mesmeric pass. That may not be true physically, but his approach was true psychologically. What he did worked, if not for the reasons he thought it did. He deserves to be better remembered, as a true pioneer of hypnosis. Mesmer's theories were picked up and developed throughout the 19th century by figures such as John Elliotson (1791-1868) and James Esdaille (1808-1859), British surgeons who used mesmeric techniques to perform surgery, including amputations. James Braid (1795- 1860) is another important figure, often regarded as the "father of hypnosis",

since his investigations established hypnosis as an area of scientific, rather than occult, interest. He also coined the word "hypnosis" itself, taking it from the Greek word for sleep (hypnos), after discarding neurypnology, or "nervous sleep". Braid was a physician, and his interest in the phenomenon was aroused when he arrived late for an appointment and discovered his patient staring in intense fascination at the flickering flames of an oil lamp. The man proved very amenable to suggestions whilst in this state of locked attention. This experience, together with subsequent experiments, demonstrated to Braid that hypnosis is nothing more than a fixation of the attention, and that a number of remarkable things can be achieved whilst in this state. In his book, Neurypnology, Braid describes a number of cases, including that of a 33 year old woman who had mobility restored to her paralyzed legs, and that of a 54 year old woman who was cured of severe headaches and a skin disorder after receiving hypnotic treatment. Moving into the 20th Century, practitioners such as Pierre Janet(1859-1947) and Clark L. Hull (1884 - 1952) advanced the scientific and academic study of hypnosis. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) also used hypnosis in some of his early research, but soon abandoned it in favor of free association techniques. Another significant name is that of Emile Coué (1857-1926), who is best remembered for the phrase “day by day in every way I am getting better and better.” Coué promoted the idea of auto-suggestion, something which we might better understand as self-hypnosis. He also recognized the role of the imagination in solving problems, and was one of the first to realize that hypnosis is something which the client participates in, rather than something which is done to them by a hypnotist. The two major figures of modern hypnotherapy, however, are Milton H. Erickson (19011980), and Dave Elman (1900-1967). Erickson pioneered "indirect hypnosis", the subtle language patterns designed to shift a patient's perception of themselves and their problems, without necessarily resorting to formal, eyes-closed inductions. More importantly, he understood that for hypnotherapy to be truly effective, it needs to be meaningful to the individual. His whole approach was based on understanding and working with the individual client's view of the world. Elman is perhaps less well-known, but his book Hypnotherapy is regarded as a classic in its field. He bridged the gap between stage hypnotism and hypnotherapy, adapting and developing the short, sharp techniques of the stage hypnotists for therapeutic purposes. That which took the early mesmerists hours to achieve could now be done in seconds. Hypnosis in the 21st century tends to follow the pattern laid down by Erickson and Elman, and the others who followed in their wake. It is a brief, solution-focused practice, using rapid or indirect techniques, and totally guided by the client. In this respect, it is

different from the authoritarian and lengthy methods of the 19th century, but it's essentially doing the same thing - bringing about profound healing and change. Smash Your Weight Loss Goals FAST!!

What Is Hypnosis? It’s not like what you see in the movies…… Hypnosis is a natural state of selective, focused attention, and, even though it is 100% natural and normal, it remains one of the most fascinating phenomena of the human mind. Our ability to enter this unique state of consciousness opens the door to countless possibilities for healing, self-exploration and change. Hypnosis, called by different names in different cultures and times, has been recognized for thousands of years and used for many purposes. When we enter into the absorbed state of hypnosis, we can use our thoughts, talents and experiences in ways not usually available to us. With the help of a trained professional, we can develop innate, individual abilities that enable making desired changes in our thoughts, feelings and behaviours possible. For reasons that are as yet not clear, the focused state of hypnosis allows changes to intentionally be made “automatically”, changes that we could not ordinarily consciously make. Hypnosis has been used in the treatment of: Addiction – Sex, Gambling, Smoking, Pornography, Food, Alcohol, Narcotics, Internet, Medication, Shopping etc. Pain – Childbirth, Chronic pain, Pain associated with illnesses such as cancer, Headaches Relationships – Divorce, Infidelity, Trust, Commitment, Abusive, Accept love, Abandonment, Jealousy Phobias – Snakes, Heights, Thunder, Flying etc. Compulsive behaviours – Nail biting etc. Emotional Problems – Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Sadness, Anger etc. Sports – Confidence, Focus and Concentration, Mind to Muscles training, Motivation etc Business – Time Management, Coaching, Productivity Enhancement, Stress Management, Confidence, Public Speaking, Enhancing concentration, Team building, Speed Reading, Focussing on goals, Over coming Limiting Beliefs etc. Losing Weight – Emotional Eating, Weight management, Weight loss coaching etc. Stop Smoking

What is Self-Hypnosis? When hypnosis is self-induced it is called autohypnosis and is often referred to as selfhypnosis. Self-hypnosis is often used to modify behaviour, emotions and attitudes. For instance, many people use self-hypnosis to help deal with the problems of everyday living. Selfhypnosis can boost confidence and even help people develop new skills. A great stress and anxiety reliever, it can also be used to help overcome habits such as smoking and overeating. Sports men and women can enhance their athletic performance with selfhypnosis, and people suffering from physical pain or stress-related illnesses also find it helpful . If you feel that you cannot solve issues or emotional problems become worse when using self hypnosis, please consult with a hypnosis practitioner or a hypnotherapist as some deeply rooted problems may need a therapy plan or session rather than self hypnosis. FAQs Will I do something I don’t want to when I go for a hypnosis/ hypnotherapy session? This is a common misconception that occurs because of stage hypnotists. Stage hypnotists are entertainers there shows are focused on entertaining the crowd. Hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis is not the same thing. In a therapy session the client will be more in control than usual and the client and the therapist will work together to reach the client’s goal as discussed during the pre-talk to assist the client with beneficial life changes that he/she desires. Anything that the client does not agree with the client won’t do , just like you won’t do anything anybody tells you to do in your daily life that you don’t want to or don’t agree with. Am I sleeping during hypnosis? Not at all, how would we be able to do therapy if you are sleeping? Hypnosis is a very relaxed state, you will still be able to talk and hear everything that is going on around you because you are always in control. I am scared that I will tell my secrets or something that I don’t want anybody to know? Because you are in control and aware of everything in a hypnotherapy session you won’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t usually do or say. Can everyone be hypnotized? Everyone that allow themselves to go into hypnosis can be hypnotized. Nobody will hypnotize you if you do not allow it therefor clients that come for therapy allow a therapist to hypnotize them to achieve their goal and adjust their life beneficially. How many sessions will I need and how long does a session last? The general guideline is 3-6 sessions still it may only require 1-3 sessions depending on the therapy needed, and you will start to feel changes right after your first session. One session last between 1h30min to 2 hours. Is there any religion connected to hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is just therapy, just as you get psychologists or speech therapists or counselors it is just an alternative therapy that assist clients in a client centered setting

to resolve issues and assist with achieves goals. Hypnotherapy is not connected to any religion. If I choose hypno-birthing will I still be in control through my birthing process and afterwards? Rules for structuring successful self suggestions/affirmations Be positive- Avoid negative words and sentences. Your subconscious mind cancels out negatives for instant if somebody tells you , ‘don’t think of a pink elephant’ what do you do immediately your mind thinks of a pink elephant. The same goes for affirmations if you structure a sentence saying I won’t eat cake anymore, guess what? Your mind goes cake, cake, cake, BUT if you say something like ‘I listen to my body, giving it healthy and balanced foods’ your subconscious mind is more likely to accept the suggestion. Present tense- Making suggestions like when I have more time, I will prepare healthy meals remains in the future rather say something like everyday I continue to make healthy food choices. Correct structuring: It is…….I am…….I feel. Incorrect structuring: I will…..I am going to……..I should. Give details that are accurate- Study your goal and create suggestions that holds truth and is attainable such as I feel fantastic as I continue making healthy food choices because I am listening to my body instead of I feel fantastic because I don’t like cake anymore. If it is not true your mind won’t take it. Be specific with your goals- Work on one aspect in your life at a time and focus on what you want to achieve putting in as much detail and repeating the self suggestion daily for 3-4 weeks. Working on different aspects all at once may be overwhelming. If you are not getting the results you desire it may be because of underlying limiting beliefs. Positive emotions- Your subconscious mind is your emotional feeling mind. Use positive feeling words that work for you creating excitement and abundance. Make realistic goals- If you are working on for example weight loss choose realistic goals, your mind knows you will not shed unwanted kilo’s or pounds overnight so it won’t take suggestions like that. Unrealistic suggestions and goals will lead to failure and disappointment building unwanted resistance.

Self Hypnosis – Step by Step 1. Physical Relaxation Sit or lie down comfortably and make sure that you can be undisturbed for the remainder of your self hypnosis session. Put your arms out in front of you and make them tense, now curl your toes upwards so that you can actually feel the tension in your legs while doing this roll back only your eyes not your head and find a spot on the ceiling and concentrated on that spot while becoming aware of your breathing pattern and you will find that your body is rather uncomfortable, virtually the opposite of what we would want to achieve. We will now gradually in phases introduce this relaxation to your body. To start with, I would like you to take a deep breath in deep deep deep and hold it When you ready to exhale let your whole body remain just as it is for now, but let your eyes close… That's right, and another deep breath in, deep deep deep AND HOLD IT, and this time when you are ready to exhale keep the rest of your body just as it is but let you head come forward into the most comfortable position, and another deep breath, deep deep deep hold it and when you are ready to exhale this time keep your toes the way they are but let your arms just completely and totally relax ....…and another deep breath in, deep deep deep… hold it, and let your toes relax, finally, and one more deep breath in, deep hold it and this time when you ready to exhale just imagine, visualise or pretend your whole body melting into the surface you are lying or sitting on. Like chocolate melting in the sun, let your whole body just relax feeling the feeling that you have every evening just before you fall asleep. When all your muscles are limp and loose. Now focus on your eye lids and allow your eyelids to relax, relax every wrinkle and line in and around your eyes. Imagine visualise or pretend that your eyes are so tired that they don’t even want to open perhaps they feel the same as when somebody has just awaken you from a lovely deep sleep. Continue to breath….. 2. Mental relaxation Only when you are certain that you have mastered the first step and can effortlessly do it should you proceed to the second stage of self hypnosis namely Mental relaxationWhether the 1st stage has taken you several minutes or several days to master does not matter you will only benefit from the 2nd stage when you have mastered the 1st .Imagine yourself looking at a blackboard on which all of the numbers from 50 down to one are all written. When you can imagine them clearly rub the number 50 of the blackboard so completely that it has gone completely out of your mind, proceed to the next number. Erase that from your imaginary blackboard before continuing, making sure that it too has vanished from your mind and has completely disappeared. Continue with this proses erasing all the numbers completely. During this process you will find that you

Tapping Into Your Inner Resources

are becoming more relaxed mentally as each number fades. You will soon feel so mentally tired that you will want to erase all of the remaining numbers off the blackboard at once. And when you feel mentally tired you are allowed to erase all the numbers completely. Now you have a completely blank blackboard and a very relaxed mind so relaxed that you are ready for the 3rd stage which will use your imagination to its full capacity. 3. Entering your imagination Imagine, Visualize or pretend the safest staircase in the world with 10 steps leading down to a place that has only one purpose and that purpose is to please you. This place is a place of your inner making . It could be the beach, a forest with waterfalls or any other place that you desire. With each step that you take, breath in and as you exhale double your relaxation…….One by one. Until you are completely relaxed in that place that pleases you so much. Now see what you can see there … …and amplify your hearing…….and Notice how it feels to feel in this place. 4. Your self suggestion/affirmation In this place of your inner making visualize your desired outcome as if it has already happened . See yourself looking the way you want to look, acting the way you want to act, feeling how you want to feel. Sensing that new you and how people react to that you while repeating your affirmation that you created for yourself and the changes you want to make. Effortless Weight Loss

It is a natural and harmless state. Self-hypnosis can modify behaviour, emotions and attitudes. It can be used to increase confidence and develop new skills. It can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and can even help people overcome habits such as smoking and overeating. Self-hypnosis is also used by sportspeople to enhance their athletic performance. If you are experiencing any abnormal medical or psychological problems, however, it is essential to seek the advice of a doctor or competent therapist before using self-hypnosis.
