segment’s market concentration, as 44% of all Electronics & Media net sales are generated by the top 3 stores.
The Chinese eCommerce market is the only one that can compete with the U.S. market regarding its size. And when it comes to growth, China eclipses the U.S. with an average annual growth rate of 16%. India looks into an even brighter eCommerce future as its entire market grows by 24% annually from 2017 to 2020.
The analysis of the top 1,000 stores reveals several interesting facts:
In this study the eCommerce market is divided into five different segments: Electronics & Media, Fashion, Furniture & Appliances, Food & Personal Care and Toys, Hobby & DIY . Toys, Hobby & DIY represents the biggest segment in the U.S. eCommerce market with net sales of US$113 billion, while also growing strongest, namely at a CAGR1 of 14% up to 2020. We observe a high market concentration: The top 5 stores – amazon.com, walmart.com, apple.com, homedepot.com, bestbuy.com – generate more than one fifth of total U.S. eCommerce net sales. Amazon.com as the biggest eCommerce player dominates whole market segments: Amazon has the highest market share in the Electronics & Media segment with 31% and leaves its competitors far behind. Amazon’s position also has a significant impact on the

While Fashion-oriented stores account for more than 40% of all top 1,000 stores, they are only responsible for 25% of all top 1,000 net sales. On the other hand, only 9% of the top 1,000 stores focus on Electronics & Media, which is remarkable as they generate much more net sales compared to the Fashion stores. The average annual growth rate from 2016 to 2017 among all top 1,000 stores amounts to 13%. The highest growth rate of 17% can be observed within the range of the top 101-150. Moreover, nearly every eCommerce store offers the possibility to pay by Visa, Mastercard and American Express. PayPal is also widespread. Regarding shipping service providers USPS, UPS and FedEx are the most common.
Study design and definition of net sales Study design:
Definition of net sales:
The top 1,000 online stores in the U.S. by net sales were determined in the following three steps:
eCommerce net sales are defined as the amount of first party sales generated by a specific online store on a domain level (e.g. amazon.com and amazon.de are considered separately) after the deduction of returns, allowances for damaged or missing goods and any discounts allowed.
1. Market screening: − Creation of a list of over 5,000 relevant online stores in the U.S. − Analysis of traffic information to filter the list for the most important stores, thereby reducing the initial number of stores to about 2,000 2. Data collection:
− Research of the relevant KPIs (e.g. company & contact information, shipping and payment providers, etc.) − Net sales modeling through the analysis of annual reports and press releases 3. Final analysis: − Regression analysis to approximate the missing net sales data (i.e. for shops without published annual reports and no relevant press release data) − Forecast of net sales for subsequent years
The study was conducted between September, 2017, and February, 2018.
6
In this study, only eCommerce net sales generated in the U.S. are taken into account. In case a website also ships to other countries, sales generated with these shipments are not considered.
If an online shopping website also offers a marketplace shop on a site like eBay or Amazon, the resulting revenue is included in the shop's eCommerce net sales. If there are any business-to-business (B2B) revenues generated by a given online store, these are also included. Only online stores with a focus on private end users (B2C), were considered for the study, i.e. shops with a B2B share of less than 50%.
