As we look ahead to the five-hundredth anniversary in 2017 of Martin Luther’s nailing his Ninety-five Theses to the door of Wittenberg church, we are reminded of the need to retain the faithful teachings handed down to us from the Word of God. Solo Christo (through Christ alone), soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone), sola fide (by faith alone), sola gratia (by grace alone), sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone): these were principles that our forefathers in the faith fought and died for. For the Trinitarian Bible Society, sola scriptura is particularly relevant. Since 1831 the Trinitarian Bible Society has focused on the task of providing Scriptures which accurately and faithfully transmit the Word of God to hungry souls across the world. We begin, wherever possible in our translation work, with the Hebrew Masoretic Text and the Greek Textus Receptus: the Biblical texts in the languages of inspiration. As the translators of the Authorised (King James) Version put it in their Preface, these are ‘the two golden pipes… These tongues, therefore, (the Scriptures, we say, in those tongues,) we set before us to translate, being the tongues wherein God was pleased to speak to his Church by his Prophets and Apostles’ (Translators to the Reader). But we do not use just any Greek or Hebrew texts. Instead, recognising the deficiencies particularly in modern editions of the Greek New Testament, we translate from the Textus Receptus: the Koiné Greek Text which has been used for hundreds of years by the confessing church. In the Old Testament, we use the standard Hebrew Masoretic Text as first published during the Reformation period.

We look to each word of the Biblical language texts, ensuring that the Scriptures we publish accurately reflect every word as inspired by God—a principle known as formal equivalence. We look for translators who follow our principles, and just as importantly who know Jesus Christ our Lord and serve Him. As well as Scriptures for non-English readers, we endeavour to provide the English Authorised (King James) Version in a variety of editions and bindings. Despite innovations in text and translation which have resulted in a huge number of English editions for all tastes and traditions, we still believe that the Authorised Version is the best and most accurate translation in English. Our editions are based on the fourth and last official revision, the 1769 Benjamin Blayney edition. In this catalogue you will find the fruit of many years labour for the Lord and His people: Scriptures in languages such as Arabic, Catalan, German, Ndebele, Nepali, Romanian and Spanish. (And work continues on translations in Amharic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Farsi, French, Shona and Turkish, among many others—see our Annual Report at www.tbsbibles.org/annual-report for more details.) Useful Information

What to expect from a TBS Bible

All Bibles—and all publishers—are not the same. Some publishers strive for the excellent quality that the printed Word of God deserves. Others produce Bibles that are more in keeping with popular novels. The Trinitarian Bible Society is different from other Bible publishers in two significant ways.

Inside The most important part of any Bible is the text. We publish only Bibles translated from the Greek Textus Receptus and the Hebrew Masoretic Text, using formal equivalence principles of translation. Thus our translations are as close as possible to the Scriptures as inspired by God. The text needs to be presented in a clean, clear type: pleasant to read over a lifetime. Our own settings, such as the Windsor and Westminster, have gone through a rigorous design process to produce a text that is modern but not garish. In choosing Bibles from other publishers, we look for printings that are classic but not antiquated, clear and sound. Older settings, printed from older images, are more likely to have blemishes— broken letters, slight streaks—than those printed digitally. We endeavour to ensure that the text in these older editions is still readable, and where they become less so we work to produce all new settings in a similar size—the old Emerald Bible was replaced by our Windsor, and the Nonpariel New Testament and Psalms is now the Pocket New Testament and Psalms. Many people focus on font point size as an indicator of readability. However, a 10 point size in one font might not be the equivalent of that in another font. Thus, it is important to see a sample of text before determining if it is big enough. Along with typeface, the layout and spacing need to be pleasant, but also easy to read. Many people find text that strings all the way across the page difficult to follow with their eyes; thus, a two-column layout would be preferable. Spacing between lines that is too narrow also makes reading harder, so it has to be adapted. Some people prefer a Bible that has many references, allowing them to compare Scripture with Scripture. Others prefer a simple, unembellished text Bible. Our Westminster Reference Bible and Windsor Text Bible fit these needs. The papers we choose are thin to reduce the bulk of the Bible, yet strong and opaque—papers which take ink well without bleeding through to the aque—p other side. Often o othe Ofte off-white papers are easier on the eyes, and ey a we choose papers which do not rreflect light.

The size and bulk of a Bible is especially important in countries in which persecution may mean that a visible copy of the Scriptures is unadvisable. And durability is essential everywhere, but more so in inclement climates, where moisture or cold may damage less sturdy papers.

Outside We seek to produce Bibles that are attractive and long wearing. We recognise that, particularly in non-English languages, one Bible might have to last a person a lifetime—it might be the only Bible he ever has. Thus we seek to make sturdy hardback Bibles, with clean easy-to-read type. But for those who might wish a luxury Bible particularly for a special gift, we produce Bibles—with the same easy-to-read type—in strong yet supple leather. Regardless of the intended use, all of our Bibles are produced with great care and attention to detail, as befits the Word of God.

File production In the twenty-first century we are blessed with many electronic innovations to help in translation and Bible production. Gone are the days of delayed correspondences and long, sometimes inadequate, postings between translators and the Society. Today, we can quickly and easily communicate with our translators via email, can visit them through improved travel, and can digitise and ship files immediately without the threat of loss in transit. Once the decision has been made to produce Scriptures in a particular language, the simplest method is to find a text that requires only minor correction—not always an easy or even doable task. But once found the text is digitised into a format that can be easily accessed on a variety of computerised devices and in different computer programs, and changed and corrected as needed. Bible programs, Internet access, online grammar books and dictionaries: all help in the task of ensuring that the Scriptures conform to the best Greek and Hebrew texts, that they reflect every word of those texts, and that they are readable by the anticipated recipients. But none of these is as important as prayer. Thus, at every step of the process we seek the Lord’s good guidance in order to produce Scriptures that are acceptable to Him. The completed translation is sent for evaluation to our workers who have expertise in Greek and Hebrew, translation and language—an often arduous task that requires discussions back and forth between countries, well facilitated by email and Skype. In due course the text is finalised, and the process of publication begins.


Useful Information Design Each Scripture portion is given its own design by our talented graphic designers. Many things go into producing just the right design. First is the understanding that this is the Word of God: the design cannot be extreme; it must not be garish; it must reflect the One who gave the Scriptures. Second is the need of the recipients: is one column unacceptable to the culture? Are there many long words that would make two-column presentation unattractive, particularly if hyphenation is not an option? Another consideration is how the design will affect the length of the book: in order to keep costs low the book needs to be as short as possible. But font size must be such that it is easily readable, even to people with poorer eyesight—a problem very prevalent in many countries. Cover materials and bindings must stand up to the rigours of heat and cold, wet and dry: these may be the only Bibles some will ever have access to. These and other considerations will be discussed until the best design for these particular Scriptures is settled.

Typesetting and Proofreading Once the design is determined, the book is then typeset and returned to the translator for first proofreading. Needed changes and corrections are determined, evaluated, and introduced into the typeset text. Once the translator’s changes are complete, the typeset text is given rigorous proofreading by the Society’s staff. Verses are counted to ensure none have been dropped from or duplicated in the text. Running heads—the book and chapter numbers at the tops of pages—are checked for accuracy. Consistency of fonts, sizes, placement of chapter and verse numbers is ensured. And the Scriptures are finally ready for print.

Printing Production of printing plates from files Our Production Manager, in conjunction with other departments, requests quotes from various printers to determine the best price for the number of copies, type of paper, cover options, and a variety of other requirements. Once a printer is engaged, files for particular Scriptures are sent to them in digital format. They arrange the pages into sections— called signatures—usually of 32 or 64 pages. A digital proof of the Bible is sent to our Editorial Department to check that the content is correct— that all the pages are there and in order, and that the text is positioned properly on the page. If anything needs to be amended, the corrections are conveyed to the printer, a new digital copy is sent to us, and the text is rechecked. Once Editorial confirm that the digital proofs are correct, Production instruct the printer to undertake the print run on our specifications. The printer transfers the digital file to the plate-making room, where printing plates are created using a hard metallic, yet flexible material. These are put on the printing press; the paper, on large rolls, is installed; and printing begins. The printed lines on both sides of each page need to match up flush against each other in order to cancel out virtually all the show through from both sides of each page—a feature that needs to be embodied in the

text files sent to the printer and established during the print run. The size of the text page will determine whether one-, two- or three-up printing— the number of copies per sheet of paper—is used. For larger page-sized Bibles, one-up printing is used: only set of signatures can be printed at a time. For smaller page-sized Bibles, two-up printing can be used: two sets of signatures can be printed together. For the smallest page-sized Bibles and New Testaments, three sections are printed using the three-up method. After all the sections are printed the printer pulls a set of the Bible sheets—called running sheets—puts them in order, folds and cuts them to something close to the finished size, and sends them to us for checking. Again we ensure that all the pages are in order, as well as looking for smudges or blemishes, that the paper isn’t wrinkled, that the print density is consistent throughout—any number of aspects that will affect the readability of the text. We contact them to approve of the running sheets, or if necessary to request correction and reprint. Folding and gathering the sections/signatures As the printed pages leave the printing press they are folded into the familiar format that will eventually be bound in the completed Bible. The pages, in signatures, are gathered for each Bible to produce book blocks. Each set of signatures pass through a sewing machine to be stitched along the spine fold using white thread—sewing gives the book blocks strength and makes them robust. Thicker endpapers—some of which include a presentation page at the front and Bible maps in the back—are sewn onto the printed sections to give sewn book blocks. To give added strength to the book block, a thin layer of glue is applied to the spine. Care must be taken to ensure that the glue does not percolate onto the pages of the book block.

Binding As the preparation of the book blocks proceeds, the printer sends us for approval a sample of the covers that we have requested. These may be in any number of permutations, from inexpensive vinyl covered paper to luxury leather, and with or without zip closures. If these sample covers are not satisfactory, the reasons are communicated to the printer and a request made for a new sample to be sent to us for approval. Once approved, all the covers for the required number of Bibles are produced, ready for binding to the book blocks.

Useful Information

Once the initial thin layer of glue on the book blocks has set, binding begins. A thick paper-like material is applied to the inside of the covers, stretching from the outside edge of the front across the spine to the outside edge of the back. This liner adds additional strength to the book block. The book blocks for our leather Bible editions have their edges gilded, during which the outer corners of the book block are rounded and a roller loaded with gold foil is run around the outside of the book block to produce a golden edge which is beautiful and durable. Some of our leather Bibles also have thumb-indexing: small hewn-out areas on the fore edge of the book block, with tabs which indicate where the books of the Bible begin. Some of our Bibles have marker ribbons attached to the spine which fold over into the book block and may be helpful for fast access to a particular portion. In some Bibles small decorative bands of cloth—head and tail bands—are attached at the top and base of the book block spine. Although these do not have a special function, the colour of these bands is suited to the colour and type of cover and add to the appearance. Some leather editions have raised bands on the spine. Some editions have a zip which is sewn onto the outer edges of the cover, producing an encased Bible. For less expensive editions of the Bible, the cover is glued directly to the spine of the book block, reaching a few millimetres onto the front and back endpapers adjacent to the spine. For hardcover editions, the inside cover boards at the front and back are glued to the endpapers. For leather editions, the endpapers are glued to a vinyl endleaf which is in turn glued to the back of the leather cover material. Throughout the printing process, the printers have various in-house checks to ensure that the Bibles are of highest quality—from initial printing to final binding and boxing.

Packaging and Shipping For display and for added protection, many of our Bibles come with sales sheets or boxes and are wrapped in plastic. This packaging is individually designed for each type of Bible; a box which will fit a hardback Bible will not fit a leather, and neither will fit a Bible with a zipper. The completed Bibles are packed into heavy cardboard cartons which are filled to the top to ensure that the Bibles do not shift in transit. The cartons are placed on pallets, and the pallets are shrink wrapped to ensure the Bibles are safely transported from the printer to either TBS or the final customer. Depending on the size of the print run, the Bibles may come in a van or on a huge lorry. Once received at TBS, samples are given to the Editorial Department, who examine the entire volume, paging through to ensure that all pages are there and that there are no blemishes or wrinkling of the paper that interfere with readability or the appearance of the Bible. Then a member of Editorial goes to the Warehouse and takes copies from each pallet to ensure consistency throughout the print run. If all is well, the shipment is cleared for distribution; if not, the printing company is contacted to attempt to rectify any problems.

To the Customer And finally the Bibles are ready to go to hungry souls and waiting hands throughout the world. Some are set aside for Grants; others are displayed in the showrooms of our International Headquarters and Branches—and in this catalogue—for sale. All leave our premises with the prayer that souls will grow in the Lord’s grace.

Terms and Conditions Bible Features Bible paper: Thin and strong, lightweight paper which reduces the thickness of the Bible and makes pages easier to turn. Black text: Scriptures in which all the text is in black print, rather than having passages in red or other colours. Calfskin leather: A very strong and beautiful split calfskin leather with an attractive grain. Clear print: Print designed so that its size and type provide excellent readability. Flexible vinyl cover: A hard-wearing vinyl-coated paper, producing a strong ‘paperback’ book.

Daily reading plan: This is the M’Cheyne plan for reading through the whole Bible once in two years—the Psalms and New Testament twice. Epistle Dedicatory: The traditional dedication to King James I written by the translators of the Authorised (King James) Version. Family record pages: Pages for recording family details such as names, births, deaths and marriages. Gift presentation page: Page at the front of the Bible for recording the name of giver and recipient, date and occasion on which the Bible was given. Headings: Informative phrases given at intervals in the text, particularly in paragraphed format editions.

Gift presentation box: Attractive box or slipcase available with many luxury editions of the Bible, designed to protect the Bible.

List of pronunciation of words and proper names: Lists incorporating a phonetic system for indicating the way difficult words and names should be pronounced.

Gilt edges: Page edges covered with gold-coloured foil to complement the colour of the cover. Art gilt has a burnished gold appearance.

Maps and gazetteer: Maps of Biblical locations; the gazetteer lists place names referenced on the maps.

Goatskin leather boards: A hardback binding covered with goatskin leather.

Metrical Psalms: Psalms arranged for singing. Our edition is that approved by the Church of Scotland in 1650.

Hardback: Heavy cardboard covered in attractive cloth, leather or vinyl.

References: System by which verses with a similar wording or theme are linked throughout the Bible. This may be located in the centre of the page or at the side margin. Some references are indicated by bold figures in the text.

However, occasional significant increases in production costs, particularly on Bibles, along with VAT rises, and the need for financial prudence on sales and trade, sometimes necessitate price increases on some items.
