Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Construction Unit 8: Assignment – 1 Exploring Carpentry and Joinery: basic wood joints and skills.
Unit 8: Exploring Carpentry and Joinery. Context This unit will help you to begin to understand the basic skills and equipment most commonly used in carpentry and joinery operations and how they are used to produce simple joints and frames in timber. You will learn how to draw and make “setting-out rods” to help you to work accurately. You will gain a sound awareness of Health and Safety issues, including the selection and use of appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment). You will cut and form a selection of common wood joints to acceptable standards, and will use the knowledge you have gained to produce a simple timber frame product to demonstrate your skills. Task Overview/ Vocational Scenario You have been appointed as a training consultant for a local construction company. Part of your job is to teach apprentices the correct procedures for ordering tools and materials. You are also expected to demonstrate appropriate technical skills in carpentry and joinery to teach apprentices. As part of your role, you must produce demonstration pieces to show how to make basic joints and frames. You will need to prepare resources to support you in this role. Of course, your work must always be to appropriate industry standards.
Date of issue: 4th Jan 2012
Date of submission: 20thJuly 2012
Learning outcomes On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the hand tools and materials commonly used to perform carpentry and joinery tasks 2 Understand the important health, safety and welfare issues associated with carpentry and joinery tasks 3 Be able to apply safe working practices to mark out and form joints for a timber frame to a given specification. Refer to the assignment task sheet and the criteria tick sheet to ensure that you meet the standards for pass, merit and distinction for Unit 8. There are NINE tasks to complete for this unit.

(e.g. measuring wood, marking onto wood, making sure that lines are straight or at correct angles, cutting straight lines and curves in wood, removing waste wood from joints, making holes in wood for joining, joining the wood with nails or screws, etc.).
Use Resistant Materials textbooks, company websites, “WOTSIT” cards D.I.Y.
catalogues etc to help you to find the information you need. Use data and images/screen shots to add quality and depth to your work. You could use the Template on the department shared area as a guide to producing your chart.
For M1, learners must justify the use hand tools and materials safely to minimise health, safety and welfare risks. This evidence could be provided by a witness statement. 2
Select the hand tools required to perform given carpentry and joinery tasks. Date task set: Deadline: a) Fill out a “Tool Requisition” form to order the tools you will need to complete the practical tasks (measuring and marking out a selection of common wood joints, cutting and shaping the joints accurately, forming and assembling the joints securely).
Use textbooks and the Internet to help you to find the information you need. You could use the Template on the department shared area as a guide to producing your chart.

This evidence could be provided by a witness statement. 3 Identify the materials used to perform carpentry and joinery tasks. Date task set: Deadline: a) Fill out a “Materials Identification” form to show that you are aware of the different types of materials available and commonly used by carpenters and joiners.
P3/4 M1
Common Carpentry and Joinery tasks include: building cupboards, making staircases, roof structures, flooring, shop fitting, installing kitchens etc. Think about the types of materials which would be used for ONE of these tasks. Don’t forget about things like screws, nails, glue, glass paper etc.
