WELCOME

FROM

DEAD

NORTH

Look at that poster again, did you see the mustachioed gentlemen getting impaled by a narwhal being ridden by a skeleton? Yes, you read that right. Just another typical day here at Dead North and it all comes from the beautiful mind of Cody Fennell. Cody is the guy behind all the brilliant Dead North designs, and we can’t praise him enough for his talent. If you see him around at the festival, give him some love, he deserves it all. Thanks, Cody. Here we go, year 6 and its a monster! In year one we had four films made, and now, six years later, 48 films have been submitted. Two of these short movies are International this year (Sweden and Iceland), and we are even lucky enough to have the director of the Swedish entry travel all the way here to screen his film, The Legend Of The Lake (Hi Daniel!). The Yukon went home with serious hardware last year and this year they are out in force again with even more entries (six in total). Hay River, Inuvik and Fort Simpson are repping hard this year too. We are very proud this year to launch a youth category, and we can see this young crew becoming a real force to be reckoned with in the years to come. The Kaw Tay Whee School entered a group project as did the Open Sky Festival out of Ft Simpson. Andrea Geraghty has returned with her sequel to Yellowknife Ground Zero, and we even have the youngest Dead North director ever hailing from Inuvik, Paige Loreen. At the age of 9 years, she delivers a solidly creepy film! Each screening night will start off with youth films so come prepared to bask in the glory of youthful creativity before getting into the main course of adult fare mayhem. Overall, we couldn’t be prouder of each filmmaker this year (and every year). We have become acutely aware in the last few years that Dead North is quickly becoming much more than just a film festival. It is a community builder, it is creating an army of Northern filmmakers which is, in turn, helping to build our industry and it has long since become necessary for many of us as we navigate our way through the depths of winter up here. In a weird way and despite the dark content of its films, Dead North has become a bit of a beacon of light, distracting many of us with collective creativity just when we need it the most. So here’s to all you misfits, weirdos, outsiders and beautifully unique storytellers, you’ve each helped build this festival one film at a time, and it belongs to you now. We hope to see all of you out at Dead North 2018 and without further ado, let’s get weird. Dead North Film Festival

2018 DEAD NORTH JUDGES We are thrilled to announce some seriously rock and roll judges this year. As you are all aware, the mandate of Dead North is to provide opportunities and a high-end platform for Northerners to create films and then get them seen by the world. It is with this in mind every year that we look to find judges who we believe can help us accomplish that mandate. This year we are bringing a producer from Greenland who will not only talk to us about her success in developing films in a remote Northern area much like ours but will give us insight into potential co-productions with Greenland. Another judge is the festival director for the Reykjavik International Film Festival. Their guests have included Werner Herzog, Darren Aronofsky, Deepa Mehta and many more. Last, but certainly not least one of the founders of Raven Banner, Canada’s premiere genre film distributor. If you’ve heard of Turbo Kid, Wolfcop or Deathgasm, Raven Banner are the people who made them go worldwide.

ANDREW HUNT RAVEN BANNER ENTERTAINMENT www.ravenbannerentertainment.com One of the founding partners of Raven Banner, Andrew T Hunt is a Writer/Producer/Director with over 20 years of industry experience. Andrew’s feature-length debut Sweet Karma premiered at the 2009 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal and was the catalyst for the formation of Raven Banner Entertainment - a worldwide sales company specializing in genre films. In 2012 Raven Banner Releasing was formed as the Canadian distribution arm for RBE, releasing such titles as Autopsy of Jane Doe, Turbo Kid, Deathgasm, Wolfcop, Baskin, Dead Shack, and Todd & The Book of Pure Evil: The End of The End. 2015 saw the creation of Northern Banner Releasing, a Canadian distribution company that focuses on non-genre films; titles such as Academy Award Nominated Embrace of the Serpent, The Happiest Day In The Life of Olli Maki, How To Plan An Orgy In A Small Town, and Hello Destroyer. Additionally, Andrew has Executive Produced numerous films, including Borealis, Stakelander, Avenged, and the upcoming films Trench 11 and It Came From The Desert. Within Raven Banner, Andrew plays a key role supervising the review, development and packaging of feature projects from script to screen, as well as overseeing the branding, marketing and distribution of select titles.

NINA PANINNGUAQ SKYDSBJERG JACOBSEN PANI NOIR FILMS www.paninoir.gl Nina was born and raised in Greenland. She has worked in the creative industry since 2010, primarily as a line-producer, where she has gained experience with productions in film, tv, photography and various cultural projects. She has both local and international collaborators, and one of the most important tasks of PaniNoir is to remove challenges, as well as streamline productions in all aspects of the industry, and her vast network ensures she can always find the right person for the job.

HRÖNN MARINÓSDÓTTIR REYKJAVIK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL www.riff.is/?lang=en In 2004, Hrönn Marinósdóttir started RIFF as a school project. For her master’s thesis at Reykjavík University, she decided to research what it would take for Reykjavík to host a major international film festival. Three weeks after her graduation, work began to bring the thesis to fruition. 14 years into the festival RIFF sees over 30,000 people attend its events every year.

Thank you from the bottom of our twisted little hearts

The Dead North Board

These folks work all year on Dead North, and it shows in how pro this festival has become in just six years. We can’t even begin to thank each of these people enough for the countless minutes, hours and days that they put into this madness behind the scenes... but we’ll try…. so a deeply felt thank you to Meagan Wohlberg, Mandee McDonald, Pat Kane, Loren McGinnis, Jeremy Emerson, Jay Bulckaert and Pablo Saravanja.

Volunteers & Support Staff

The unsung heroes of any great festival. These are the people who help out behind the scenes in small and huge ways that make this festival shine, and they often don’t get the love they deserve. Thank you to Davis Heslep, Keating Smith, Erika Nyyssonen, Laura Bain, Gigi Migliorini, Outpost 31/Jayden Soroka, Jordy Walker, AJ McCreadie and anyone else we’ve forgotten here. We love you all.

Capitol Theatre

Six years ago, these guys had no reassurance this Dead North thing wasn’t just going to be an exercise in chaos for them. Afterall, they have to continue to run a theatre in and around Dead North. We wouldn’t be where we are and couldn’t have done this without the patience and generosity of Chris Wood, Cory Timmer and everyone at the Capitol Theatre. They are awesome and we consider them a crucial part of the Dead North family.

NWT Film Commission Industry Tourism and Investment

While we have several sponsors (who are all thanked below!), we do feel the need to single out the festival’s premier sponsor, the NWT Film Commission/ITI. Camilla MacEachern, Jaysen Knight and their entire departments have really taken a chance with Dead North. This is not your typical festival, and we recognize that it can be a bit, shall we say, “much” at times. We applaud your vision and can’t thank you enough for your faith in us. This festival literally wouldn’t happen without your dedicated support.
