A Motion Modification Algorithm for Memory-based Human Motion Simulation Woojin Park Proceedings of the 46th Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Conference, Baltimore, Maryland, September 30 - October 4, 2002. Computer simulation of human movements is an essential element of Computer-Aided Ergonomic Design. As a general, accurate, and extendable motion simulation model, we propose a Memory-Based Motion Simulation (MBMS) method. A MBMS system consists of two key elements: A motion database and a motion modification algorithm. A motion database stores a finite number of real human motion samples (root motions). Given a simulation scenario, the system finds a root motion closely matching the input scenario, and modifies the root motion to meet the given simulation scenario exactly. An angle-time-based motion modification method was developed in this study and was used to predict various goal-directed reach motions. The proposed motion modification algorithm was found to predict real human motions accurately for the 9 DOF seated reach motion modification. The algorithm was also capable of conducting complex whole-body reach motion modifications that involve modifications of 45 joint angle trajectories. abs2002_08
