Additional file 1 The effect of chronic pharmacological blockade of α7nAChR on hepatic inflammation and fibrosis in bile duct ligated rats In order to study the effect of chronic α7nAChR blockade on progression of hepatic fibrosis, the effect of chronic injection of methyllycaconitine citrates (MLA), a selective α7nAChR antagonist was assessed on hepatic fibrosis in BDL and sham-operated control rats. MLA was purchased from Abcam (Cambridge, MA, USA) and dissolved in 0.9% sterile saline and injected subcutaneously (1 mg/kg) twice daily for three weeks [1]. At the end of the experiment, intrasplenic pulp pressure, hepatic hydroxyproline level, serum transaminase activity as well as hepatic mRNA expression of TIMP-1 and MCP-1 were assessed as described in the manuscript.
