Y
President Kevin Reimer on advocacy & relationships
esterday, if you had a moment in your busy day, you may have read an article that I wrote regarding the Fraser Institute (download a copy: http://bit.ly/2cMiMru). On Follow on Twitter September 1st, two members of the Fraser Instihttps://twitter.com/bcpvpapresident tute submitted an opinion piece to the Vancouver Sun on their thoughts on school funding. While Read the President’s blog http://bcpvpa.bc.ca/president/ there are many issues that I could have addressed with the Fraser Institute’s argument I chose to deal with only one aspect of their article — their reference to administration (ie. managers and leaders within the system) acting as apologists who make excuses for our system based on the belief that the current funding levels for public education are not meeting the needs of the system. 2016 — 2017 Board of Directors

At the outset, I want to tell you that speaking on behalf of you as members is an awesome responsibility and one that I take seriously. You may recall that in an eNews article last spring, I summarized the findings of our 2016 member survey and an important issue for members was the belief that the BCPVPA should have a stronger voice on matters important to public education. While I completely agree with that sentiment I still believe that the issue of our public voice, and how we use it, is something that we need to more closely examine with our members. My assumption is that our members believe that we should advocate for our Association and its members by using our collective voice to take a stand on important matters and, in doing so, influence decisions related to public education. Advocacy is about trying to positively influence the decision-making of those groups or organizations that have influence or power over you. It is relatively easy, and I will admit somewhat fun, to take on the Fraser Institute because they have no power over our members nor our Association. In addition, I believe, we have the social licence to take a firm stance against their arguments. Our public grants us that licence because it aligns with their experiences with the BC public education system. Our public message is always predicated on a belief in public education and, as a Board, we consider how our message: • aligns with the mission statement, values, and strategic goals of the Association; • deepens public understanding and appreciation for the role of principals and vice-principals and for the public K-12 system; • maintains and enhances valued relationships with education partners. We do not always take public stances, but that does not mean we fail to advocate. Every aspect of the work that we do as an Association is about advocating for public education and our members. Our advocacy, as an Association, is to positively influence the groups and organizations that have influence eNews 4

over us. For example, earlier this week, Kit and I made a presentation to the BC School Trustees Association’s executive to help them better understand our organization and the roles and responsibilities of principals and viceprincipals. It was a positive meeting and as a result of that meeting I believe that the trustees better understand our work and are curious to learn more through regular meetings. The most important work that we do in advocating on your behalf is to ensure that we have positive relationships with partners. At the Presidents’ meeting in November we will be discussing with the Presidents, the pros and cons of having Chapter Presidents meet regularly with their local MLAs. Like our work with the trustees this week, I believe that every MLA in the province should better understand the work that we do in schools to ensure that the highest levels of student health, safety, and learning are achieved. I look forward to the conversation in November and hearing from the Presidents on how we can better support Chapters in their relationships with government. Like me, you may be following the spectacle that is the US presidential election process. While there is much to comment on, and be shocked by, the one piece that has resonated with me comes from the Clinton campaign and its campaign slogan that we are stronger together. Broadening our advocacy approach will help to ensure that our Association and the public confidence in the work of principals and vice-principals remains strong. Have a great weekend, Kevin
