DELIVERABLE 1.1 BENCHMARKING DATABASE
SAFERIDER PROJECT FP7-216355
Executive Summary The Del 1.1 “Benchmarking Database” is a public deliverable of the A 1.3 of Saferider Project. This deliverable is composed by an interactive CD Rom (available at
[email protected] &
[email protected] with a simple request) and this additional paper report. It gives a state-of-the-art analysis of existing and under development (prototypes) Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and In-Vehicle Information System (IVIS) applications for Powered Two Wheels (PTW), presenting interfaces with pictures, some technical specificities, names of the product, and references such as web site address where it is possible to get some additional up-to-date information about the product. The content of the “Benchmarking Database” has been set up by a compilation of information coming from Saferider partner’s inputs and from the net.

DELIVERABLE 1.1 BENCHMARKING DATABASE
SAFERIDER PROJECT FP7-216355
1 Introduction The SAFERIDER project, funded within the 7th Framework-Programme of the DG Information Society & Media, aims to study the potential of ADAS/IVIS integration on motorcycles for the most crucial functionalities and develop efficient and rider-friendly interfaces and interaction elements for riders comfort and safety. This document is a part of the first Work Package untitled “User Needs & Use Cases”, including “A1.1: accident analysis”, “A1.2: Riders’ identified needs and want for information and communication technology”, run in parallel with “A 1.3: benchmarking database and ergonomic inspection of existing applications for riders”. The task “A1.4: use cases” will finalise this Work Package1. This document corresponds to the deliverable of the A 1.3 of Saferider Project. It gives a state-of-the-art analysis of existing and under development (prototypes) Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and In-Vehicle Information System (IVIS) applications for Powered Two Wheels (PTW) (note: the ADAS and IVIS acronyms have been created in the automotive context and are commonly used since then, identifying assistive functions from informative functions for the driver; it appears that they should be revised in the rider context: ADAS becoming ARAS for “Advanced Rider Assistance Systems” and IVIS becoming BIS for “Bike Information Systems”. For practical reasons, we will keep the ADAS and IVIS vocabulary all along this report and the CD Rom). The Del 1.1 “Benchmarking Database” is a public deliverable, and is mainly composed by an interactive CD Rom and an additional paper report. It is a compilation of information coming from partners input and from the net. This report presents context of the project in chapter 1, objectives, methods and results in chapter 2, whereas a conclusion is proposed in chapter 3.
2 Benchmarking Database 2.1 Objectives The objectives for setting up the Benchmarking Database are:
To have an overview of available or under prototyping functions of PTW’s systems, in order to be able to evaluate the diversity and the characteristics of ergonomic design concerning existing functions and HMI.
To develop a benchmarking database giving detailed information on each function, system by system, according to functionality, technical characteristics, producer, HMI elements used,…, including description and photos
To make this benchmarking database available for the project partners and for any interested stakeholders through the development of an interactive CD Rom with an additional report.

2.2 Method and process Following several conference calls between INRETS & UNIMORE, a common template (see annex 2) has been developed allowing to categorize and to describe PTW’s systems according to their technology, their functions and the specificity of their HMI. A template “overview table” (see annex 3) allowed each partner to be able to identify in which category he was able to bring information, and to organise then the inputs made inside the project (see Overview table and Description Template in annex of this report). The templates were sent to Saferider partners to be fulfilled according to their knowledge. Others information were collected from the net. To structure the database, INRETS proposed a classification of functionalities with five categories (cf. Figure 1 : Benchmarking functionalities). Pink categories cover functions related to safety and yellow categories cover functions related to comfort or entertainment. Green category is related to helmet HMI.

2.3 CD-Rom presentation INRETS chosed CD-ROM as a support of the interactive database because it allows presenting a great deal of information without overloading the reader. The CD Rom allows also interactivity and direct access to internet web sites, these features being an important quality made possible through this type of media. Home page presents eight categories (cf. Figure 2 : CD-Rom home page):
four on the left related to ITS for safety,
one about ITS for comfort,
one about ITS for entertainment.
And the two latest categories present,
for the one the particular type of HMI which is the helmet,
and the other category presents sensors.
Finally, there is a bibliography page to reference all website used in this CD-Rom and visit them to bring a complement of information.

Each product page of a same functionality is built with the same template. For instance, for navigation functionality: the description of general HMI, the specific subfunction HMI, pictures of HMI, and finally the additional features are presented (cf. Figure 4 : Example of a product page).

When it was possible or when products have lots of functionalities, a table is added to compare products. For instance, for navigation function there is a summary presenting what function and what HMI for what product (cf. Figure 5 : Example of table to compare products).

3 Conclusion
This overview allowed identifying the following important points: -
the systems covering assistive functions are at a very prototyping state. None of them are available on the market in Europe today. Some examples such as warning about on-coming vehicles are today available only in Japan. This review allowed to point out that this type of “ADAS functions” are under construction nowadays in several European projects (watchover, Pisa,…).
-
several “IVIS functions” functions are nowadays available for riders on the market: o
Entertainment such as music listening, audio book player, pictures viewing are functions made available for riders. Nothing on the literature indicates that riders are really using these functions.
o
Navigation, giving instructions to the user for directions to follow to reach a pre-defined destination. It has been showed in previous studies in the automotive context that the concept can have positive impact on road safety, as long as the interface and interaction do not interfere with the activity. From this point of view, the modalities of optimised navigation HMI for riders are not well known at this stage, very few studies have been conducted on this topic. The products available on the market have diversified HMI. For the dialogue between rider and system, the access for the user can be more or less direct according to the choice of the product manufacturer (for example, possibility of hardware buttons in addition to tactile screen inputs for some expansive product). The way to communicate auditory inputs to the rider is also quite diversified: some product relied on the mobile phone with blue tooth connection to transmit information to the rider, some other have just plain wired earphones connected to the system.
The ergonomic inspection planned as a next step of the A 1.3 will allow identifying which manufacturers choices regarding “IVIS functions” would be the more relevant in terms of usability and safety for the riders, according to expertise process.
