Shipbuilder Steering the Way Read on p. 2

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) has received a $407 million contract extension to a previously awarded John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) construction preparation contract. The award extends the period of performance, adds additional efforts for engineering, planning and material procurement through Oct. 31, and authorizes additional manufacturing efforts.

NNS is performing work on CVN 79 under a construction preparation contract that allows for engineering, planning, long-lead time material procurement and initial manufacturing to begin before the full construction contract is awarded. The full contract is scheduled to be awarded later this year.

“This is a critical phase of construction on John F. Kennedy as key material procurement and production activities are taking place every day,” said CVN 79 construction vice president Mike Shawcross. “It is very important to get a good start on a ship of this magnitude and complexity, and this contract extension allows for those activities to continue and keep the ship on a path for success in meeting our customer’s goals.”

During the event, Dave Long, CVN 65 Inactivation director, thanked attendees for coming out to see the unveiling and said, “More than half a century from when Enterprise was brought to life, we will bring her home. This inactivation will set the pace for future inactivation’s of other carriers. It is with utmost importance that we inactivate her with dignity.” Shipbuilder Comfort Bell (E47) shared his thoughts about being part of CVN 65’s Inactivation team, “I’ve worked on five carriers before, but this will be my first time working on Enterprise. Because this is a first-time availability... Continued on p. 3

On Saturday, March 16, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Lifting and Handling team was hard at work lifting Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) 70-metricton mast into place. Mariners Club Hosts Silent Auction to Benefit CHKD Newport News Shipbuilding’s Mariners Club held a silent auction at Point Plaza Newport News during their annual Holiday Party on Dec. 8 to raise money for the community. This year, the club presented a check in the amount of $2,000 to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) on Feb. 12. Mariners Club President Carol Gardner said, “Thank you to all who made this event another success.” Pictured (L to R): Bernadette Reid (E88), Avery Hensley (E13), Carol Gardner (O36), Julie Fike (E88), Karen Govan (M53), Mike Speight (X69) and Jacklyn Becker Banas, development officer for Corporate Relations and Events at CHKD.

Shipbuilder Steering the Way Material Support shipbuilder Earl Townes (O53) was recognized by leadership on March 13 for quickly retrieving two directional valves on short notice that were needed for installation on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Townes took ownership of the task that was requested of him one Saturday evening in February and rapidly obtained the valves. Once locating the parts, Townes transported them to Pier 3 where they were needed.

Capt. Daniel Grieco, commanding officer of USS Theodore Roosevelt, Earl Townes (O53) and Todd West, CVN 71 program director.

“Once I described the valves, Earl was able to find a truck appropriate for the job. He took me over to the warehouse, he had keys to all of the gates and doors, he found the valves, he signed the paperwork and he got me and the valves back to the ship,” said X43 General Foreman Cliff Edwards. “The most amazing things were his preparedness and his work ethic.”

Continued from p. 1 ...for NNS, I am really excited about all the ‘firsts’ that will come with the project. I know there will be a lot of mixed emotions when she pulls into the dock for the last time, but there will also be a great sense of pride -- she has served our country well for more than 50 years!”

X72 Construction Supervisor Jennifer Guthinger has spent most of her shipyard career working on Enterprise. “Seeing the ‘Welcome Home’ poster today was exciting and sad at the same time,” she said. “Exciting to know that I will get to work on her again soon, but also sad to know that this will be her final time at NNS. I know it will be an emotional time for the shipbuilders working on the deckplate -- it’s amazing the experience they have with her.” For more information about carrier inactivation, visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com.
