CULTIVATING A LEGACY OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY Nearly 40 years ago, sperm whale oil was used as an additive in virtually all lubricants because of its exceptional lubricity and heat resistance. Sperm whale oil was so effective in ATF, transmission fluid was rarely changed. Over 30 million pounds of sperm whale oil was used each year in lubricants. In 1972, the Endangered Species Act outlawed the killing of the whales and the use of its oil. With no suitable replacement available, transmission failures skyrocketed from just under 1 million per year, to over 8 million by 1975. International Lubricants, Inc. (ILI) in conjunction with Dr. Philip Landis, a distinguished research chemist who headed the Mobil Oil Applied Lubrication Research Group, developed and patented the first and only high-temperature sperm whale oil replacement using environmentally friendly renewable resources, called Synthetic Liquid Wax Ester (LXE®) Technology. In terms of the molecular structure, LXE is closely related and performs similarly to sperm whale oil. However, this unique synthetic technology, found only in Lubegard products, is so heat stable, it’s proven to outperform sperm whale oil additives. Today, Lubegard products are the number one product used in the professional transmission rebuild industry, and the only product of its kind to be used and approved by major automobile manufacturers (OEM’s).

The sperm whale was named for the valuable spermaceti oil (wax) that this whale produces in the spermaceti organ (located in its head). It has the largest brain of any animal, weighing about 20 pounds (9 kg).

ALL OTHER OFF-THE-SHELF ATF ADDITIVES FALL IN THESE CATEGORIES Are among the most reactive, corrosive and destructive chemical additives in the market today. The Federal Trade Commission has brought a number of these companies to legal action due to false performance claims. When chlorinated paraffins break down, they can form acids, which attack bearing materials and components. Acids also degrade the ATF additive packages and form sludge.

Seal Swellers are designed to penetrate, soften and swell gaskets, o-rings and seals, expanding their volume and stopping leaks. The seal materials are actually physically damaged and this will cause them to fail completely. Professional rebuilders do not use seal swellers or solvents for short-term fixes that will eventually cause comebacks. Solvents dissolve and change the fluids behavior. Solvents are extremely unstable in the presence of heat and reduce the thermal stability of the ATF they are added to.

This additive group is based on active zinc and phosphorous. ZDDP is neither a new or cutting-edge technology.
