QUICK HITS
Southern Illinois hosts Murray State at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, September 17, at Saluki Stadium. The SIU-MSU rivalry dates back to 1927, but the teams have only played 20 times in those 90 years. Billy Reed is two receiving yards away from cracking the top-20 list for career receiving yards at SIU. Reed eclipsed 1,000 career receiving yards in the season opener at Florida Atlantic. SIU head coach Nick Hill earned his first collegiate coaching victory last week with a 30-22 win over Southeast Missouri. SIU is 29-7 under the lights in Carbondale since 2002. The Salukis have won eight of their last nine games under the lights in Carbondale, including four-straight. Lights were reinstalled at McAndrew Stadium in 2002. The sixth game under the new lights was against Murray State in 2003--the last time the two schools faced each other. Including his stats at Stillman, quarterback Josh Straughan surpassed 6,000 career passing yards last week. SIU will wear special black jerseys for the sixth annual Black Out Cancer game, which benefits Southern Illinois Healthcare. Winning bidders have the opportunity to put the name of their choosing on the backs of the jerseys, often honoring a loved one affected by cancer.

HILL’S FIRST WIN SIU head coach Nick Hill earned his first win as a collegiate head coach last weekend. The Salukis beat Southeast Missouri, 30-22. With Hill’s win, Saluki coaches improved to 10-11 in their home debuts. More than 10,000 fans came out to watch Hill’s home debut, the third-biggest home crowd for a non-Family Weekend and nonHomecoming game in the last five years (19 such games): 1.) SEMO (2014), 10,385 2.) Eastern Illinois (2013), 10,038 3.) SEMO (2016), 10,003 Saluki Hall-of-Famers Jerry Kill and Carl Mauck were on the sideline and in the locker room after the win. The last time SIU met Murray State, September 13, 2003, was the sixth night game under the new lights at McAndrew Stadium. SIU won, 32-7. WE WILL PROTECT THIS ROCK SIU has lost only one turnover through two games, which is tied for sixth in the FCS. Among teams who have played at least two games, it’s tied for fourth. COACH KILL CONNECTION Head coach Nick Hill played for former SIU and Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill from 2005-07 while Kill was at SIU. In Hill’s senior season, 2007, SIU advanced to the national semifinals of the FCS Playoffs, when the Salukis lost to Joe Flacco and Delaware in Carbondale. Four assistant coaches on Southern’s staff have direct ties to Coach Kill. Safeties coach Marty Rodgers played for Kill at SIU in his first two seasons, 2006 and 2007. Offensive line coach Trevor Olson played for Kill at Northern Illinois. Olson, running backs coach Nate Griffin and tight ends coach Jay Nunez were on the quality control staff under Kill at Minnesota

before Hill hired them at SIU. Defensive coordinator Kraig Paulson coached against Kill and Hill in 2006. Paulson was the defensive coordinator at Montana, leading it to a 20-3 win over the Salukis in the second round of the 2006 FCS Playoffs. WIN #1 RECAP Southern Illinois used a third-quarter surge to push past Southeast Missouri in the home opener on September 10. SIU trailed 9-3 late in the first half. SIU had 3rd and Goal with three seconds remaining in the half. SIU head coach Nick Hill went for the touchdown and got it on a Jonathan Mixon one-yard TD run, and SIU led at the half, 10-9. SIU’s defense started the second half by forcing a 3-and-out. The offense responded with a touchdown to extend SIU’s lead to 179. The next possession, Chase Allen forced a fumble and true freshman James Ceasar ran it 47-yards for a touchdown to give Southern a 24-9 lead. True freshman field goal kicker Matt Sotiropoulos went 3-for-3 on field goals in the game, tying the program record for most made field goals in a game. SALUKIS IN THE SEASON OPENER SIU dropped its season opener at Florida Atlantic, 38-30. SIU put up 530 yards of total offense and outgained the Owls by 73 yards. SALUKI OFFENSE PICKING UP RIGHT WHERE IT LEFT OFF Last year’s offense was among the best in the FCS. SIU led the MVFC in total offense, completion percentage, passing offense and scoring offense. In all four categories, SIU ranked in the top-11 of the FCS. If SIU’s worst total offense game last season (390 yards) was its average, the Salukis would still have ranked in the top half of the country (FCS) in total offense per game. Since the start of last year, SIU has recorded 200 or more yards of total offense in 22 of 26 halves of play, including 394 yards of total offense in the first half at Indiana and 408 in the first half vs. Missouri State. North Dakota State had given up 29 points just twice in its previous 68 games before SIU scored that many against the Bison. CHASE ALLEN: ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE Senior linebacker Chase Allen is among the nation’s best linebackers.

RETURNING MVFC HONOREES LB Chase Allen and WR Billy Reed were both second-team All-MVFC honorees in 2015. Both return for their senior seasons in 2016. RB Daquan Isom, WR Jimmy Jones and S Jefferson Vea were named to the MVFC AllNewcomer team in 2015. Isom was a true freshman and Jones and Vea were redshirt freshmen. SO CLOSE Six of SIU’s eight losses in 2015 were by six points or fewer. Five of the eight losses were by three points or fewer. Both marks were the second-most close losses in MVFC history. Only Eastern Illinois in 1991 lost more games by three points or fewer than the Salukis did last season. SIU won a one-possession game vs. Southeast Missouri in the second game of 2016. The Salukis had been 1-7 in their previous eight games decided by one possession before the win over the Redhawks.

COACHES
MVFC Champions: 2003 • 2004 • 2005 • 2008 • 2009 | FCS National Champions: 1983 | FCS Playoffs: 1983 • 2003 • 2004 • 2005 • 2006 • 2007 • 2008 • 2009 Nick Hill is in his first season as the head coach of Saluki Football. He is the 21st head coach in school history and only the fourth to lead his alma mater, joining Abe Martin, Bill O’Brien and Shawn Watson.
The Nick Hill File
Hill was hired as the program’s quarterbacks coach in 2014 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2015. The results were remarkable as Southern’s offense averaged 498 yards per game in 2015 -- the second most in conference history. Director of Athletics Tommy Bell hired Hill as the program’s head coach after the season.
Hometown: Du Quoin, Ill. Wife: Alisha Children: Skylar High School: Du Quoin College: Southern Illinois, 2008
Hill also played for SIU. He is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in school history, compiling a 21-6 record as a starter under Hall-of-Fame head coach Jerry Kill in 2006 and 2007. In his senior season, Hill guided SIU to a National Semifinal appearance in the FCS Playoffs.
Playing Experience 2005-07, Southern Illinois
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT NICK HILL Jerry Kill, Saluki Hall of Fame Football Coach: “I promise you Nick Hill will work day and night because he doesn’t want to let anyone down. Guys work better with a little chip on their shoulder. When I came there I had a little chip, and I surrounded myself with great staff, and he’ll do the same thing. He has a good model to work from. I think he’s learned a lot about coaching, based on what Southern’s offense accomplished last year. What people don’t realize is how many people he knows, from various pro leagues, to our guys at Minnesota and throughout college football. Nick will have a lot of people supporting him. He needs to enjoy today, and the bottom line is he has to go out-work people tomorrow. A lot of people weren’t fired up about me when I was hired. You get respect by winning football games, and to do that, you recruit good staff and good players. Nick can do that. He’s smarter than I was -- a dumb-ass country boy from Cheney, Kan.” Carl Mauck, Saluki Hall of Famer and 34-year NFL playing and coaching veteran: “Nick has the characteristics you look for in an outstanding head coach. He’s level-headed, but also has a lot of fire and energy. He knows what he wants at quarterback, which is the position that makes or breaks your team. He will recruit harder than anyone and will present himself well to recruits and their families. I’m confident that he can assemble a strong staff. He knows the area, he loves the school. I’m proud that he got the job and I’m excited for him and the program.” Deji Karim, Former Saluki running back, teammate and four-year NFL veteran: “Nick is a great leader because of the type of person he is. He’s smart, and his core beliefs and values inspire everyone around him to improve. He has great relationships with current and former players, and I truly believe he will get SIU back on the right track.” Brandon Jacobs, Former Saluki RB, teammate, nine-year NFL veteran, and two-time Super Bowl champion “First of all, Nick is a great man, and that is a sign of a great coach. He’s just a good, solid dude; his character speaks for itself. I spoke to Nick during the process about his goals if he were to get this opportunity, and he is absolutely on the right track. Coach Kill recruited good, hard-working, shipyard guys. Nick is going to do the same thing. He’s not in this for a paycheck. He genuinely loves being around the guys. He’s in this to win, and his heart is in it. They will play their hearts out for him.” Year School 2014 Southern Illinois 2015 Southern Illinois 2016 Southern Illinois
