Abstract Image segmentation is an active topic of research for last many years. Edge detection is one of the most important applications for image segmentation. The process of partitioning a digital image into multiple regions or sets of pixels is called image segmentation. Edge is a boundary between two homogeneous regions. Edge detection refers to the process of identifying and locating sharp discontinuities in an image. Edge detection for image segmentation using different types of filters. However, Edge detection is a random phenomenon and thus used widely in image segmentation. This paper also gives an overview of technique developed in each stage of image segmentation.
