Unlike other traditional businesses with private owners or shareholders, the social enterprise is owned by the charity or non-profit organization. By purchasing materials from the New Readers Bookstore, you are actively contributing to improving the state of literacy and basic education in Canada.
What is Frontier College? Founded in 1899, Frontier College is Canada’s original literacy organization. Frontier College recognizes that literacy is an essential skill and a right. Frontier College delivers literacy programs by recruiting and training volunteer tutors to work in communities across the country to provide myriad literacy programs for children, youth and adults. Frontier College staff and volunteers work in many places – inner city neighbourhoods, prisons, Aboriginal communities – helping children, youth and adults strengthen their literacy skills in order to further their learning and life goals. Examples of programs and services by Frontier College include: • Programs for Children and Youth: Reading circles, homework tutoring, summer literacy camps • Programs for Young Adults & Adults: Literacy & Basic Skills programs, one-to-one tutoring, GED preparation, computer skills programs, workplace training programs • Community Building Programs: Workshops for parents, train-the-trainer workshops, tutor training, literacy conferences In 2012, Frontier College was one of the first organizations in the country to be accredited with Imagine Canada’s Standards Program for demonstrated excellence in five key areas: board governance, financial accountability and transparency, ethical fundraising, staff management, and volunteer involvement.

Boyle Street Community Services Water Wings Program Literacy is essential to completing job applications, writing a resume, and other employment search activities. In partnership with Boyle Street Community Services, Frontier College is helping adults overcome multiple barriers to attain meaningful employment and to lead productive lives. The Water Wings Program is an employment readiness and educationupgrading program that assists marginalized, unemployed youth and adults with the process of obtaining employment. Through a step-bystep process, our tutors help individuals gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to achieve their career goals.
The New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (DPETL) encounters many skilled trade apprenticeship students who cannot advance to the education they seek because they have not passed the pre-requisite Essential Skills Test. Students need to refresh or relearn math, science and English skills in order to pass the test. DPETL worked with Frontier College to develop the Apprenticeship Essential Skills Test Study Program where our tutors work one-to-one with learners in a non-traditional classroom setting, providing instruction tailored to their specific needs.
Supporting Employers with Workplace Training and Immigrant Settlement in the North In Whitehorse, Frontier College partners with Northern Vision Development LP Hotels to train and mentor its employees – many of whom are Aboriginal or newcomers to Canada – during regular work hours in areas like workplace and government documentation, proofreading, business writing instruction, customer service, and health and safety training. Frontier College’s Labourer-Teachers assess the employers’ needs and work towards the mutual goals of improved performance and enhancing staff and customer relations. There are many compelling benefits to both the employer and employee: better job understanding, teamwork, increased quality of work, productivity and profitability.

Reading, Writing & Spelling
Patterns in Spelling Reading Level: 3+ This carefully structured four book spelling program is designed for adults reading at a low level. • Teaches students to spell by stressing patterns regularly found in English words. • The series begins with the ‘word family’ approach to teach basic vowels and consonants, then moves on to more complex blends, sight words and digraphs. Teacher’s Editions include reduced replicas of student lessons with their answers, lesson plans, and unit tests. Student Books are divided into 4 phonic topic areas: short vowels, long vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, and other vowel sounds. Skill-building exercises provide practice in such areas as prefixes and suffixes, contractions, homonyms, capitalization and grammar.
The Spelling Toolbox Reading Level: 3 – 4 These workbooks promote a strategy-based approach to spelling. Each workbook provides an introductory lesson that describes spelling “tools” or strategies, and 20 thematically organized units on the topics of home, community, work, health, and writing. In each unit, the student learns how to spell 15 words by using phonics, syllabication, word families and common spelling rules.

Look at the picture.
What is Samsam doing? What is the problem? Did you get lost before?
Samsam stops in the lobby to ask a question. “Excuse me, how do I get to my class?” The unfriendly woman frowns. “Go down the hall and around the corner. Your class is on the right.” “Thanks for helping me out,” Samsam says. “Just doing my job,” the woman answers. Samsam follows the directions. She is not lost now. What will Samsam need for class?

This novel series is for young adults who find conventional fiction irrelevant or too hard to read. The series takes an honest and hard-hitting approach to subject matter that many teens will identify with such as self-abuse, family breakdown, suicide, and sexuality. At 25,000 to 30,000 words, the books are shorter than the average novel but they certainly don’t look like it. The clear, carefully chosen font is slightly larger than normal and paragraphs are broken with ample space. TITLE Breaking Dawn
