Abstract Deregulation and privatization actions are creating new problems of control, management and reliability, because of new players and new technologies that are spreading in power distribution systems. Such scenario requires a knowledge of the system the more comprehensive and accurate to make control actions efficient and reliable. In particular, attention must be paid to phaseangles estimation to avoid critical situations. In this context, the use of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) looks promising. This paper presents an efficient branch currents based distribution systems state estimator (BC-DSSE). The estimator allows to include synchronized phasor measurements provided by PMUs. Besides, the branch current state model is extended so that the knowledge of the voltage profile is significantly improved. The estimator is expressed both in polar and rectangular coordinates and a comparison between the obtainable accuracy and computational efficiency is presented. Furthermore, the possibility to treat radial and weakly meshed topology, also in presence of dispersed generation, is analyzed. The results obtained on different distribution networks are presented and discussed. Marco Pau (S’14) received the M.S. degree in Electric Engineering from the University of Cagliari, Italy in 2011. He is a Ph.D. Student at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari. His research activities focus on measurement systems applied to electric distribution grids and designed for distribution system state estimation.
Paolo Attilio Pegoraro (S’03-M’06) received the M.S. degree in telecommunications engineering (cum laude) from the University of Padova in 2001. In 2005 he received the Ph.D. degree in electronic and telecommunications engineering from the same University. He worked at CSELT research laboratories in Torino and he is currently part of the R&D group of Abbeynet in Cagliari. He is cooperating with the Electrical and Electronic Measurement unit of the University of Cagliari. His research activities focus on the development of new measurement techniques for telecommunications and modern power networks.

Sara Sulis (S’04-M’06) is assistant professor of Electrical and Electronic Measurements at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari since march 2006. Dr. Sulis received the Ph.D. Degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Cagliari, where she also received the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. Her research activity concerns Power Quality issues in power system with special attention to harmonic pollution issue, the metrological qualification of the measurement processes and numerical approaches based on a Monte Carlo probabilistic method. In last years the research work focused on distributed measurement systems applied to electric distribution grids and designed to study reliable methodologies to perform both state estimation and harmonic state estimation of the network.
