Theater impresario Oscar Hammerstein I begins our story with the debut of the Manhattan Opera House in 1906. Built “to bring opera to the people,” the Manhattan Opera House quickly rivaled the Metropolitan Opera in popularity, drawing both audiences and star performers to this exciting new venue.

In 1926, it was used as the scoring stage for Warner Brothers Studio’s Don Juan, the film industry’s first motion picture with a synchronized, pre-recorded musical soundtrack. World-renowned artists, decade

after decade, have performed and recorded at Manhattan Center. From Arturo Toscanini in the ‘30s to Grammy Award-winning recordings by Leonard Bernstein, Itzhak Perlman, Placido Domingo, to today’s Oscar-winning film composers such as Eliot Goldenthal for Frida, the legend continues. Today, Manhattan Center is New York’s celebrated destination for extraordinary performances and unforgettable special events. It is the premiere midsize venue for corporate galas, charity fundraisers, award shows, rock concerts, and fashion shows. With its unique location in the heart of midtown, Manhattan Center proudly serves New York as a world-class facility where media and entertainment come together.

HISTORY

When Hammerstein accepted a payment of $1.2 million from the Metropolitan Opera for a 10-year moratorium on opera performances in 1910, the new lessees, the Shubert Brothers, brought vaudeville shows and popular music concerts to the Manhattan Opera House. Renaming the building Manhattan Center in 1920, the Freemasons, new owners of the building, built the Grand Ballroom on the roof of the existing opera house, and unintentionally created an acoustical masterpiece. It has become the venue of choice for performances and recordings ever since.

The Hammerstein combines a magnificent, century-old former opera house with fullyintegrated 21st century media and entertainment production technology. This elegant room features a hand-painted ceiling, ornate woodwork, and three balconies with side boxes. Soaring 75 feet above the main floor, the ceiling holds numerous rigging points suitable for production lighting, sound, or set design. Integration with the in-house audio recording studios, television studios, video control rooms, and post-production suites makes the space an incredible venue for productions, special events, live or taped broadcasts. Production possibilities in this highly flexible event space are virtually limitless. Events hosted in The Hammerstein range from international product launches and television awards programs to designer fashion shows and fundraisers. The Grand’s dazzling 40-foot-high ceiling includes strategic rigging points catering to any production requirement. Interconnected to our audio recording studios and HD control rooms, The Grand, like The Hammerstein, is the ideal location for any multimedia production, live performance. The superb acoustics of The Grand have made this magnificent venue perfect for music recording, whether the project is a full-blown orchestral film score, a classical orchestra recording, or simply an intimate chamber ensemble. The natural reverberation of the room gives any recording a particular sound quality that defies emulation. Artists find the ambience inspiring, allowing them to effortlessly achieve their very best performance.

Academy Award-winning film scores and Oscar-nominated soundtracks are frequently recorded in The Grand. The list of renowned artists who have recorded legendary performances at The Grand reads like a “who’s who” of the greatest performers and conductors of all time. Manhattan Center brings the highest professional standards to staging, scenic design, lighting design, sound design, video projection, video recording and audio recording. We scale the level of production to perfectly fit our client’s needs whether the production is a world premiere, a televised awards program, a global business conference, a new product announcement, a fashion designer runway debut, or a trade show. We can even provide a live web-cam transmission of the event for our clients.

Manhattan Center offers more than 20 edit rooms of varying sizes able to accommodate the most demanding online or self-supervised offline editing clientele. We can provide you with any kind of gear from Apple Final Cut Studio to Avid, from Media Composers to Symphony Nitris. MC post-production suites have fiber and copper connectivity to over 48 terabytes of shared network storage on an EditShare. All suites are wired to a clean server room where you can bring your own servers or we can sub-contract the type of storage you want to meet your needs.
