CHRISTINE CHEN, a junior at Canyon Crest Academy studies French horn with John Love. She is a 2nd chair horn player with the CCA Wind Ensemble and plays with student bands. She also has extensive training in piano, wind and voice. She shares her passion for music and science by tutoring young children and playing music for patients at hospitals. Christine is an active member of FanFaire Foundation’s KIDS Playing For KIDS program and a leader of its Youth Volunteer Program.. MICHAEL CHEN is a 6th grader at Sage Canyon Elementary School. He studies piano with Inessa Litvin. He became interested in piano at age 5 and has been participating in competitions since age 7. In March 2012 he performed at Carnegie Hall, having won the First Prizes in two international competitions. In 2011 he won the State Title of the MTAC Piano Concerto Competition and its singular Grand Prize for Exceptional Achievement. Described by California Music Teacher Magazine as “exquisite, spirited and passionate beyond his age”, he dreams of becoming a concert pianist and a composer of music for video games. Michael is among the KIDS Playing For KIDS program’s most active members. URSULA HARDIANTO, a fourth grader at La Jolla Country Day School., started piano lessons at age 6 and has since won many awards in piano competitions throughout Southern California, including 1st place at Irvine Piano Festivals in every musical period category of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. Having recently won top prizes in two international competitions she performs twice this spring at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Currently enrolled in a music conservatory program in Orange County, she has been an active member of KIDS Playing For KIDS since April 2012.
ADRIAN LIU, a 9th grader at Dehesa Charter School., began playing piano at age 5 and currently studies piano with Mrs. Inessa Litvin. He was the 2011 winner of the San Diego Symphony’s Young Artist Competition and debuted as a soloist with the San Diego Symphony in May 2012. He has also won awards at various MTAC competitions. Adrian, who also studies violin and chamber music at the California Institute of Music, performs regularly at local fundraisers, and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald Charity House. He is an active member of FanFaire Foundation’s KIDS Playing For KIDS program and plays at its Free Family Concerts throughout San Diego county.
PAUL MAXWELL began piano lessons at the age of 4 and cello at 6. Devoted to music, Paul has been homeschooled since 1st grade. He has played in the CYO and SDYS orchestras, but recently he has found chamber playing to be both challenging and extremely enjoyable. A frequent participant in regional competitions and festivals, Paul has received top prizes both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. Last June he performed Dvorak’s concerto with New City Sinfonia as MTAC concerto competition winner. An active member of KIDS Playing For KIDS, he plays at venues across San Diego and Orange counties. Paul loves reading, learning about science and technology, and sailing.

About the “KIDS Playing For KIDS” program Launched in October 2011, this popular program seeks to nurture talented and musically gifted young students so that they can serve as role models for children in our communities. The program team members are given performance opportunities, encouraged to pursue excellence in their studies and value community service. Typically A-students, these youngsters also excel in science and math accomplishments quite in sync with FanFaire Foundation’s mission to nurture through music and science appreciation programs the kind of creativity needed in today’s science-based economy.
since age 10. Concertmaster for SDUSD Honor Orchestras from 2010 to 2012 , she is currently concertmaster of her school's orchestras. She performed as an orchestra member with the San Diego Symphony in 2011 and 2012 in its annual "Side by Side" concert. A member of a piano trio which placed first in the 2013 San Diego VOCE competition, she is also first violinist of a quartet which has a history of community service. Haley first participated in the KIDS Playing For KIDS program in June 2012. Her concept of music is neatly summed up in one of her favorite quotes: “For me, art, and especially music, exist to elevate us as far as possible above everyday existence.” - Gabriel Fauré
CLARA TRUONG. an 8th grader at Black Mountain Middle School began piano lessons at a very young age as a Suzuki Method student of Constance Almond. Currently a student of Inessa Litvin, she has won top prizes in numerous local and regional solo competitions since age 10. Her piano quintet has won prestigious awards and has been invited to play at the 2012 MTAC San Diego Centennial Banquet. She has performed with the USD Symphony and the Inland Valley Symphony Orchestras. She volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House and the Arbors at Rancho Penasquitos Assisted Living. An active founding member of Kids Playing for Kids, she cannot wait to start teaching math and piano this summer to children in underserved communities throughout San Diego, a new program of FanFaire Foundation.
