PORTOBELLO OLDER PEOPLES PROJECT Charity Number SCO24513

The Portobello Older Peoples Project is a voluntary organisation offering high quality day care services to frail and older people in the Portobello area of Edinburgh. The objects of the Project are to promote the benefit of the frail, elderly people of Portobello and its environs without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, by associating the local authorities, voluntary organisations, churches, and inhabitants thereof in a common effort to provide, or assist in the provision of facilities in the interest of social welfare, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the aforesaid people. The Project provides the opportunity for ten people each day (Tuesday&Wednesday) to receive a stimulating and enjoyable experience amongst friends. Transport, snacks and meals are provided along with a range of activities. The Project relies on the support of its dedicated volunteers and employs two part-time organisers. The activities on offer at the centre are an integral part of ensuring a rewarding experience for the older people that attend. Activities can include gentle exercise, outings, games, music, craft work, and invited speakers. Equipment such as new books, exercise tapes, skittles or balls, group games such as quizzes, reminiscence work and craft work allow more choice for the older people. We currently receive funding from Edinburgh City Council Social Work department, which covers the costs of the Organisor’s salaries, transport and the cost of the hall. We need to fund raise for all our other expenses. The management committee, organisers and volunteers are committed to providing the best possible environment and opportunities for our members. The funding from Edinburgh City Council doe not cover the total cost of our transport so we half to do fundraising to make up the shortfall. Anyone wishing to come to the project must be referred by The Project Organiser, Social Workers, Doctors,District Nurses, Ministers and Community Connecting.
