Inside This Issue: - San Diego British Car Club Council - British Car Day - IEJC Wine Country Concours at Idyllwild - Here Comes the Judge! - Holiday Party Invitation & more!

Presidential Perspective I wrote this Perspective before the election dinner, so if you are reading this article, I guess I am your newly elected president! I am very lucky in that we have a great bunch of hard working people on your club's board and committees. Without them, I would be lost! Last month was the British Car Day and it was a great success with over 220 British Cars including 27 Jaguars. We had a great time socializing and drooling over all the beautiful cars. Three couples who were nonmembers brought their Jaguars to this event and Nedra was able to sign them up as new members. We now have 201 members! Please see the article in this issue of the Tracks for more on this event.

ON THE COVER

Well, it seems this year has just flown by and December is almost upon us. Please keep Saturday, December 14th open on your busy holiday schedule for our Annual Holiday Party. Nedra and Grant have put together another great holiday party that you will not want to miss. You'll find all the details in the flyer included in this issue. Remember, you must prepay for this event. Lastly, I have some great news. Ray Waite has been coordinating with the San Diego Zoo for our February event. We will start out with a private bus tour of the Zoo followed by a catered luncheon. Details in next month’s Tracks. In the past, our club has supported the San Diego Zoo with a donation in honor of Orson, the Zoo's black Jaguar. Orson turned 21 this year and we want to reestablish this worthwhile donation. On your 2014 club renewal notice, you will find a line where you can donate money to the Zoo in honor of Orson. I am hoping you will consider donating to this cause. We will present the check at our Zoo event on February 9th.

OK, Now that we have your attention, I just want to remind you that your SDJC is re-establishing its longtime support of our San Diego Zoo. Please consider donating to the zoo when you renew your annual club membership. If every member adds just $10 or more to their renewal, we can raise over $2000 to give to the zoo at our February Zoo Luncheon Event. ANNUAL ELECTION DINNER at the BUTCHER SHOP Saturday November 9, 2013 Article by

Jim Hallameyer Forty five SDJC members turned out for our annual election dinner at the Butcher Shop. The steaks were fantastic, the company was great and all had a wonderful time. The entire slate of candidates was unanimously elected (see the slate in the Oct./Nov. issue of the Jaguar Tracks).

Ali Proctor signs everyone in.

‘Girls just wanna have fun!’

The raffle was a hoot with Joe Harding winning the coveted case of oil left behind by Stick Holmes when he departed San Diego. Upon Joe’s turn to select a prize, the ever helpful audience encouraged him with loud calls of, “Take the oil!“ The truth is, it was the only prize left when Joe’s ticket was called. A huge thank you to Diane McDonald for providing the raffle. Thanks also to Roger McDonald for taking most of these photos.

Lucky raffle winners. Paul’s socks.

2013 IEJC Wine Country Concours at Idyllwild November 8-9, 2013 by

Mark Hodges Members from the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco Jaguar clubs attended. Desert European Motors supplied three brand new Jags to display: a silver F-Type, a white XF, and a caviar XJ. They had a Concours price special going, but I don’t know if they sold any cars at the event. The Inland Empire Jaguar Club (IEJC) held their 10th Annual Wine Country Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Idyllwild Inn, up in beautiful Mile-High Idyllwild California. The weather report was cloudy with a chance of meatballs and snow, but not only were there no meatballs, there wasn’t any snow or even any heavy cloud cover. It was cool in the 60’s and 70’s, and a beautiful autumn day for a car show. It was exactly 120 miles from my ranch gate to the Idyllwild Inn.

Rusty Beard and his crew put on another great show. While I have heard talk in the past about moving the Concours to a more convenient location, this place has character and I think they should hold it here every year. They did move their command post to the front cottage from their usual cottage in the middle, but that didn’t have any effect on the event. This year they hid the trophies, so I didn’t know what they looked like. I was expecting the usual wine bottles, which I really like, but boy was I surprised when I saw the first trophy presented after judging, which just happened to be mine.

December 2013

Even though this event conflicted with British Car Day at the embarcadero, where many of our members went, seven San Diego members attended this Concours, bringing nine cars. Tom Krefetz and J Craig Venter both trailered up two cars. Tom brought his blue ‘67 420 & and yellow ‘72 XKE; while Craig brought his ‘50 XK 120 Alloy & ‘48 3 ½ Saloon (which was voted best of show at our July San Diego Concours). Rob and Ruth Cohen drove up in their new ’12 souped-up silver XKR. Ruth says even though she loved their blue one, this one is a manly man’s car and loves the way Rob looks driving it. Brian Ellis showed his green ’99 XJ8 VDP. Jim Roberts showed his ’69 blue E-Type. Bill and Debbie Woolley brought their his and hers black ’02 XK’s with his and hers license plates; they even parked them together. It was kind of cute. And of course, I brought my Frost Blue ’09 XF. There were a total of twenty-two (22) cars being judged. My eleven year old, Devin, checked through all the cars with his clipboard and pencil, writing down all the car and owner info so I could find all the San Diego member cars and match up the owners with the right cars in the photo section. He was so official looking, a few people even asked him if he was a Junior Judge doing pre-inspections.

Jaguar Tracks 14

Judging finished a bit after 2 pm and we all gathered around for the awards. Rusty first thanked all the judges for their hard work and presented them each with a bottle of wine. Then he called out two members, for being the only two people who have attended all ten Wine Country Concourses. Silly me, I didn’t listen real well so I didn’t catch the names, plus I didn’t have a pencil and paper on which to write. Drop me a note if you know who they are and I will edit this and include their names. There were four wine bottles left, and they each grabbed two to a round of applause. I’ve been to five, so attending all ten is quite an accomplishment.

Rusty and his crew outdid themselves with the awards. Look at the pictures I took. They put the right kind of Jaguar model car based upon the class of the winner on a piece of shellacked wood. These awards took a lot of time and energy to hand make, and I think they were fantastic. Mine was an XF on a piece of shellacked piece of wood. The doors to the car even opened.

December 2013

At the end of the event, Steve Kirby of the L.A. club thanked Rusty and his crew for putting on a great event and I seconded his sentiment. All in all, I think everyone enjoyed showing their cars, getting caught up with old friends, telling a few lies, and just having a good time.

SAN DIEGO BRITISH CAR CLUB COUNCIL BRITISH CAR DAY Sunday, October 13, 2013 by

Jay Stamets

Jaguars on the field at SDBCC

Bob, Jay, Katherine and Vic

Twenty-seven Jaguars joined over 220 British Cars at the annual British Car Day Show sponsored by the San Diego British Car Club Council. This year’s event was held in downtown San Diego at the beautiful Embarcadero Marina Park North. With unobstructed views of San Diego Bay, the park was the perfect location for our Jaguars to be viewed in all their British glory.

Jags by the ‘Big Bay’

Of the 27 Jaguars, 20 were owned by SDJC members with the remaining from either out of state clubs or non-club members. Three of the non-club members joined our club at this event and we would like to welcome them! They are Kevin and Hana Beatty, Scott and Theresa Kingston and Lynn and Howard Stark. We look forward to seeing them at future events.

Craig then presented trophies to the British Cars voted best in their category by fellow members. In the Jaguar group, trophies where awarded to the following SDJC members. First place in the XK120-150 category went to Bob and Diane Detro for their XK-140M. Second place in the XKE category went to Wright and Trisha Benson for their 1967 XKE 2+2. In the 1976 and later Touring/Sports category, fist place went to new club members, Lynn and Howard Stark for their 1989 XJS. Second Place went to new club members, Scott and Theresa Kingston for their 2014 F-type and third place went to Dan and Jorgene Jensen for their 2007 XK. At the conclusion of British Car Day, Craig McLaughlin, as President of the SDBCCC, presented to Julie Ryan a touching dedication in honor of her husband, Rex Ryan. The plaque read, “ In memoriam of Rex Ryan, the voice, the heart and the soul of British Car Day, October 13, 2013”. Rex was a friend not only to the SDJC but the entire British Car Club community and will be greatly missed.

Ok, I know it’s not a Jaguar, but I couldn’t resist putting Craig and Dannie McLaughlin’s gorgeous Sunbeam in this article. After all, they are SDJC members and SDBCCC show hosts.

SDJC DYNO DAY Saturday, January 25, 2014 at

The Dyno Shop Have you ever wondered how your Jaguar stacks up against other cars or those showroom marketing brochures or car magazine articles on horsepower and torque? Silly question, of course you have!! Well Saturday January 25, 2014 is your chance to get your Jaguar strapped down onto a DynoShop 850 Computerized Dynamometer, have it run up to red line (or less if you prefer) and get a print out of horsepower, torque, and air/fuel ratio. You will find this event interesting and fun even if you don’t have technical background or competitive spirit. This is the fourth “SDJC Dyno Day” that we have held at The Dyno Shop, 10042 Prospect Ave, Santee, CA 92071. All three previous events included a wonderful line up of classic cars from the 1950’s and 1960’s, modern Jaguars right off the production line, and everything in between. Bring your Jaguar (or other cars if you wish) for a morning of fun, loud noise, and excitement as the cars are run, one by one, on the dyno. Bring your friends and their cars (they don’t have to be in the club or own a Jaguar to join in the fun). The last time the testosterone was so thick you could cut it with a knife!! (grin) The Dyno Shop technicians will be there to expertly answer your questions about their equipment, the print outs you will receive, and professionally run your car on their dyno. The Dyno Shop owner, Mark McNeil, will be available afterwards to discuss your results and possible ways of improving your car’s performance. The cost for two runs on the dyno (possibly more if you car stays strapped to the dyno) is $75 if you pay with a credit card and only $60 if you pay with cash. (STRONG HINT!!) Show up time is 08:00 AM. I will be there early to start lining up the cars in order of arrival. The first car will be dyno’d at 8:30 AM. Each car takes about 15 minutes to complete, so if we get 12-15 cars like the last three times, the last car should be completed about noon. If we get 20 or more cars, the event will run into the early afternoon. If you have any special schedule needs, please let me know ahead of time and I will try to accommodate you. Check out the The Dyno Shop website for more info on their equipment, the print out you will receive, and their contact and location information: www.thedynoshop.com. RSVP to Paul Novak at [email protected], home (760) 789-2510 or cell (858) 342-0445 by Wednesday, January 22 to reserve your spot for “SDJC Dyno Day 2014”.

With heartfelt thanks to Julie Ryan, we are proud to display Rex’s 1953 XK 120 M throughout the Holidays. The following is an article that appeared in the August, 2013, issue of the SDJC Jaguar Tracks.

IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR by

Randy Lockert

Rex Ryan - Born 4/18/1935 Passing 7/1/2013 It is impossible to capture all that Rex Ryan was in this lifetime. Here is a short tribute to a phenomenal individual. We will honor and salute the man that we all knew and loved. Rex was born at Hollywood Hospital in Los Angeles to Fred and Thelma Ryan. Fred was a school teacher and principal at various schools in San Diego. Thelma was a homemaker. He was raised in La Jolla, matriculating from La Jolla High School and attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, earning a degree in Architecture. Rex served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. There he acquired his first Porsche. He drove it around Europe during his stay there and brought it back to the US on his return. (He restored the Porsche and, a couple of years ago, brought it to the Secret Car Club for us to admire). He worked for several large firms in San Diego, assisting in the design of some prominent structures, notably the Star Dust Hotel here in Mission Valley (when there was very little there). Becoming disgruntled with the architectural field, he made a career change. Rex started selling automobiles here in San Diego. He proved his worth as he was an excellent salesman, making a name for himself and rising to sales manager position for the dealerships he worked for. In 1967, with his good friend Dick Kramer, Rex was instrumental in the start up of Ivac. They produced the first digital thermometer that was used in the local hospitals and later went nationwide with sales. Various business and sales positions came his way and he finally settled at Ridgewood Capital in the early eighties, rising to the Sales Manager for the Western United States. He met his wife, Julie, when he lived in Laguna Beach. They moved to Bankers Hill in San Diego in 2004. Rex semi retired from Ridgewood three years ago, but was still involved with the firm. He was planning to return as he relished selling and working. From his past positions as President of the San Diego Jaguar Club, and membership in the MG Club and the Secret Car Club, there were few who had the encyclopedic memory of the Jaguar and many, many of the other marques that Rex possessed. Ask him a question and he, on most occasions, had the answer. Rex was involved in many facets of the car hobby and had a very nice collection of beautiful cars. We were hosted by him at the Park Avenue garage and had the opportunity to hear him recant the particulars of the automobiles in his collection. We really appreciated the opportunity to view his cars and see him in his element, that of a story teller weaving the intricacies of each car and how and when he acquired it. For those of us who attended the La Jolla Motor Car Classics, the British Car Days at Liberty Station, and various meets and rallies, his was the smiling familiar face that made the day more enjoyable by his presence. Rex is survived by his wife, Julie, his three children, Jeff, Meleen and Jenifer, and his grandchildren, Nick, Daniel, Matthew, Nathan and Shauna. To any and all who knew Rex, a large hole has been left in our hearts. We loved him and will miss him greatly. Rest in peace dear friend. December 2013
