A Brief Moment In History…. The Henry Players began in the summer of 1991 when Dawn Willard read an article in the Henry Herald. The late Ed Bridges was discussing his dreams for expanding the cultural arts in Henry County. She contacted him about starting a theatre group. He put her in touch with Ron Townsend, the manager of the Holiday Inn, and with Debbie Hill. The trio of strangers met at a local restaurant but soon became friends as they shared their ideas for forming a community theatre. Dawn thought they should begin small with a clever comedy. Ron disagreed. He felt they should begin as they intended to go on; grab the audience from the start. Hello Dolly became the first show, and Ron the first president of the Henry Players. Auditions were held at the Holiday Inn, rehearsals were held in a warehouse owned by Shiloh Baptist Church, and costumes were borrowed from Gordon College. Melba and Artis Williams, Dawn's parents, loaned the seed money to pay the royalties. Numerous supporters gave small donations and a few larger ones were given anonymously. There were caring individuals from Stockbridge to Locust Grove who wanted to invest in the future of our county and its quality of life. Hello Dolly opened in March of 1992. The audience was wowed! They couldn't believe so much talent existed right here in Henry County, and that has continued to be the response of most audience members after viewing their first Henry Players' show. The success of Hello Dolly was followed by Barefoot in the Park, a clever comedy, performed in August of 1992, and the first Board of Directors was formed. Our first full season of four shows began that year. As soon as one show closed auditions were held for the next. We generally performed two musicals and plays, trying to appeal to the audience at large and offer variety for the performers as well. We offered discounts to season ticket holders and large groups, to senior citizens and children. We created levels of sponsorship with commensurate bonuses. We allowed other civic groups with a connection to a particular show to have a display in the lobby. Our season has now expanded to include five shows a year and our program touts our sponsors both new and old. In September of 1994, we instituted "The Henrys," an annual dinner and awards program at which we honored our own for outstanding performances or technical achievement. This was always a season highlight. The awards were voted on by our season ticket holders. Now, the Henry Players participate in the MAT Awards competing against other area community theatres. When the Players began, we rehearsed wherever we could find a space: churches, 5

schools, even the basement of the Lake Dow Country Club, while it was still under construction. Performances were held in the auditorium of the McDonough Elementary School under the sponsorship of the Henry County Department of Parks and Recreation. We built our sets in a rented space on Main Street in Locust Grove. Later, we moved closer to McDonough and then on to rent our present location, affectionately called "The BOSS" for Big Old Storage Space, in Locust Grove. We are still looking for a permanent home of our own. In time there became a need in the county for a performance venue. This was created by the increasing number of schools being built without auditoriums and only gymnasiums meant for athletic events, not for band concerts, choral recitals, or plays. The demand was also fueled by the highly successful Henry Players, and in 1998 The Henry County performing Arts Center was dedicated. The Henry Players have always tried to keep our costs low to make quality theatre affordable. When the elementary school was converted into a much needed headquarters for the Board of Education, the Players lost their venue. At a considerable increase in expense, the Players moved into the Performing Arts Center. Ticket prices went up, but so did the quality of our shows. The technical aspects were greatly enhanced with better lighting and sound. The auditorium accommodates 703, far more than most other area community theatres. With a minimum of four performances per show, almost three thousand people have the opportunity to see a Players' production. Over the past nineteen years, the Henry Players have performed 84 plays, cast over 2000 performers, and given thousands of dollars in scholarships. We have young people who grew up on our stage now performing on Broadway and elsewhere. Regardless the career, experience in theatre is valuable for encouraging self-discipline, creative expression, responsibility, and teamwork. You may not realize this from your seat in the audience, but it is happening. Today the Henry Players remain committed to providing affordable, quality, family entertainment. We have grown to become one big family with all the dynamics that entails. We are there for each other, and we are here for you. At every audition there is always someone new, a stranger who comes looking for acceptance, drawn by a desire to be a part of something that will enrich his life forever and the life of his community, just like those three strangers who met that summer years ago.

A Word from the President…. Dear "____"

W

hy the "____"? Well, after almost 20 years of letters from Presidents, I don't know what to call you. You are more than an audience member, you are a friend - but to write that sounds like I am going to beg for money. You are one who has journeyed with us. What a journey it has been to get here…we are in our 20th Season! Some of you, have been with us since the beginning, others are like me and came in about ten years ago. How many of our shows have you seen? What was your favorite? Still singing a song or two from a musical we did fifteen years ago? Ah….isn't theatre great!! For those of you who continue to join us show after show, thank you! If this is the first time you are with us, we hope it won't be the last. Please take some time to look at pictures from our past and help us to plan our future. We have some surveys in the lobby that will be used to bring you another exciting 20 years. A group of volunteers has put together some of our history for you to enjoy at intermission and following the show. Thanks again for being here as we kick off this exciting season with Jesus Christ, Superstar! Sincere thanks,

The Henry Players

A Word from the Directors…. Dear Audience Member,

F

or us, bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to The Henry Players has been an aspiration for many years. It seems appropriate that for the 20th season of The Henry Players, we are able to produce the show on its 40th anniversary. This show was quite controversial when first released so many years ago, but time, familiarity and a changing society have left us with an incredibly clever and poignant musical. The premise of telling the story of the last days of Jesus of Nazareth through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, the antagonist, traitor and pawn, was a stroke of genius by Rice and Webber. For many of us of the rock generation, this was one of the "had to have" albums of our young lives. It was one record that was played over and over again until we could sing the entire score. This phenomenon helped to make directing this show such a pleasure, because many of the actors and musicians showed up on the first day of rehearsal with all of the parts already memorized. Now it is time to pass our love for this wonderful music on to the next generation. This show pushed our technical imagination up a notch. Our intent was to keep the show simple yet surprising and subtly reinforce the intended dichotomy of ancient and modern. Special thanks to Eric Barker and Jeff Medlock for their ability to keep their cool while we described just one more special effect we wanted to include! We are so thankful for the entire talented cast, musicians and production crew who made this such a memorable experience.

Thank you,

Matt Middlebrook and Damon Bohan Co-Directors

Who’s Who in Jesus Christ Superstar Elliot Beckner (Priest 1) Sets, sound, stagehand, theatre widower, Elliot has done it all for The Henry Players, except for appearing on stage… until now. In his premiere performance, he takes the stage in one of his all time favorite shows. He is a welcome addition to the cast. Aaron Bradley (Guard/Soldier) Aaron attends Union Grove High School where he is a member of the show choir. He has several musical interests including piano, bass, guitar, drums, and singing. This is his first show with the Players. Randy Chaffin (Pontius Pilate) Randy has numerous stage credits, among these are South Pacific, The Fantasticks, My Fair Lady, Little Shop of Horrors, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Here's Love and Jekyll and Hyde. Randy, and his extra-special wife of 32 years, Amy have been blessed with two children, Natalie and Matthew, and three grandsons, Louie, Alex, and Brayden. As a practicing Christian, he has to admit that playing the role of Pilate caused him to reexamine just what Pilate meant when he "washed his hands" of Jesus. Pilate's actions showed he wanted none of the responsibility of an innocent man's death but he was involved in that death none the less. He's pondered just why it is that Christians seem to wish to cut Pilate a little slack when it comes to the crucifixion of Jesus. He's not sure of the reasons, but can't help wondering if we can relate to Pilate through shortcomings of our own. Maybe in some way we are like Pilate and have washed our hands as well? With this in mind he'd like to dedicate his performances this week to the One without which he would be nothing: Jesus Christ. He thanks you for coming to the show and hopes you enjoy it! DJ Clarke (Apostle James, son of Aphaeus) DJ demonstrated his theatrical abilities in The Henry Players' spring production of Copacabana. As a previous student at Eagles Landing High School, he had roles in Bye Bye Birdie and South Pacific. DJ likes to hang around with his friends. He loves to act and wrestle. DJ thinks The Henry Players are a great group of people, loves being a part of it and hopes to do more with The Players in the future. Ken Cowart (Apostle Andrew) Ken has appeared in The Henry Players productions West Side Story and A Christmas Carol. He also was in The Front Page with Clayton State Theater. Ken is a graduate of Clayton State University where he studied Information Technology and fixed laptops for a living. He is a whiz with Photoshop and enjoys wasting his time on video games and karaoke. Robert Crawford (King Herod) Robert recently moved back to Henry County after living near Mableton/Austell. He is happy to be back working with The Players after some years away. In his previous time with The Players, he served as a Board Member and Technical Director for several years. He also performed in many, many productions. His credits include: The Man Who Came to Dinner, Camelot, The King and I, My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz, Music Man, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Red Hot & Cole, Wait Until Dark, South Pacific, The Fantasticks and Fiddler on the Roof. He has performed some of these same shows at other theaters. Further works at other theatres include The Crucible, Dracula, Twelfth Night, Once Upon a Mattress, Hello Dolly as well as the Six Flags Crystal Pistol Show. Kathryn Durham (Ensemble) Katy once again takes The Henry Players stage where she previously performed in Sweeney Todd, Man of La Mancha, Titanic, A Christmas Carol, Mousetrap and A Funny 19

The Henry Players

Who’s Who in Jesus Christ Superstar Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She has also been active with Southside Theatre Guild, The New Depot Players and Atlanta Lyric Theatre. Katy has a BA in Music, Vocal Performance with a Theatre minor from Shorter College. She is a current MAT Award Nominee for Best Performance of a Minor Female Character in a Musical for her work in Sweeney Todd. Cody Elliott (Guard/Soldier) Cody attends Union Grove High School where he has performed in six Grove Players performances. He enjoys acting, art, writing, performing music, reading, painting and playing tennis. We are happy to have Cody in the cast as he takes The Henry Players stage for the first time. Amy Fanusi (Ensemble) Amy has a busy schedule. In addition to performing on The Henry Players' stage, she is working on her Doctorate at Liberty University and teaches Special Ed at Henderson Middle School in Jackson. She has performed with The Players in Titanic as a first class passenger (who did not die) and as a Who in Seussical. She has played and sung with Clayton State Community Jazz. Amy has traveled to ten countries outside the US, including England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland this summer. Karen Ferrill-White (Ensemble) Karen has been active for many, many years in theatre. She acted and directed in college, directed the JCHS theatre program for 25 years and has acted in or directed numerous community theatre productions. She has performed previously with The Henry Players in Sweeney Todd. Karen is a happily retired grandmother to nine year old, America, and proud parent to Chris and Lacy. She is thrilled to once again be on stage with The Players, in this, one of her favorite musicals. Chris Gansel (Apostle Peter) Chris is a welcome addition to the cast as he performs in his second show with The Henry Players. His first show was Sweeney Todd. He has also had various roles at Mansfield Playhouse and Ohio State University. He wants to thank the directors and all the talented folks involved with the show. His performance is dedicated to his beautiful wife, Beth, and his daughters. Terry Gantt (Ensemble) Terry has had a blast the last couple of years being a part of The Henry Players' productions of Treasure Island, Papa's Angels, Seussical the Musical, Sweeney Todd and The Women. Now she gets to sing the music of Jesus Christ Superstar, music she grew up with, and perform with a most amazingly talented cast. She thinks it is a wonderful way to spend her time! She says, "Work is work, but play is what life is all about." Steve Green (Priest 2) Steve is well rounded when it comes to The Henry Players. Whether it has been in front of an audience or behind the scenes, Steve has dedicated many hours to this organization. He has appeared on stage in Calamity Jane, Big River, Here's Love, Annie, Secret Garden, and Kiss Me Kate. He has worked sound for many other shows, helped build sets and served as a Board Member as well. In addition to Co-Directing Les Miserables and Papa's Angels, we look forward to his Co-Direction of the much anticipated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe later this Season. Steve would like to thanks his wife of 34 years, Rita, for all her support. The Henry Players

Who’s Who in Jesus Christ Superstar Joanna Griffin (Mary Magdalene) Joanna has been a joy to watch on The Henry Players stage in Copacabana and as Miriam Aarons in The Women. She also has performed in Twelve Angry Jurors, In the Fullness of Time and They Called Him Messiah. Between practices, she and her husband, Nic, are renovating an old house. When not wielding a paintbrush or indulging herself on stage, she loves to read, play with her puppy, Sandy, and sing at her church, 3 Point Bible. Adam Grubbs (Jesus Christ) Although Adam is proudly making his debut with The Henry Players, he is not new to the stage. His credits include: Cabaret (Emcee), Zombie Prom (Josh) and Clue: The Musical (Mr. Boddy) to name a few. In addition, he has previously played the role of Jesus in productions of both Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. He has a BA in Music and Political Science from Furman University and a JD from Rutgers University. Adam has been a welcome addition to The Henry Players family. You can follow Adam on Twitter @ adamrux. Russ Ivey (Apostle Judas Iscariot) Russ has been on stages around the metro area for quite some time. You may recall seeing him here at the Henry County PAC, a few years ago, as Hysterium in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, as a Gangster in Kiss Me Kate, or even on SCBTV Channel 15 in Parody Tonight. He has Co-Directed, with Damon Bohan, The Henry Players production of West Side Story. On the north end of town, he is most remembered for his parts as John Merrick in The Elephant Man and also as Professor Harold Hill in the Music Man. Yet, most theatre actors and directors know Russ for his primary role as the President and Founder of The Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Awards (MAT Awards), which takes up most of his theatre time running the administrative duties and judging many shows around town. He is also the Operations Manager for Cumberland Mall in Marietta. He is excited to finally play one of his top three dream roles and hopes you enjoy his performance. He would like to thank the cast, directors and crew for a job well done on a great production. Duck Kingsenamongkhol (Apostle James, son of Zebedee) Duck's latest participation with the Henry Players was as Assistant Director in Barry Manilow's Copacabana. He has performed on many different stages. His Henry Players shows include: Seussical The Musical, West Side Story, Mousetrap, Hello Dolly, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He has also performed in Little Women: A Musical, Mousetrap (at Southside Theatre) MASH and Bone Chiller. Jonny May (Annas) This is Jonny's first time working with The Henry Players, but he has been a member of and performed in over 35 productions at Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn over the course of 25 years. When not acting, he works as a web designer for an international hotel chain and also does freelance design projects. He sends a big thank you to Matt and Damon for allowing him the opportunity to perform in one of his all-time favorite shows, and a super big thank you and I love you, to his wife, Heather, and his kids, Ian and Erin, for talking him into auditioning. Brittney Milroy (Soul Girl) Brittney first danced her way onto The Players' stage as a Copa girl in Copacabana. She currently lives in Atlanta with her boyfriend, Franco. She works as a hairstylist at Great Clips. She is happy for the support from her parents and boyfriend. Brittney is really excited to be doing her second show with the the Players and hopes there will be more to come. 21

His family consists of his dad, Bryan, his mom, Kelly, as well as two sisters, Kelcy and Kalyn. His sister Kalyn, who died on the fifth of January, is a great inspiration to him in his acting. He works at Publix with some of the best employees a person could work with. His hobbies include hanging out with his best friends, drawing occasionally, weight lifting with his dad and celebrating his walk with Christ. He wants to dedicate his performance to his loved ones, his sister Kalyn and most importantly, God. Robert Oden (Caiaphas) Robert is a seasoned veteran with The Henry Players. He developed his love for the stage in his first theatre production Driving Miss Daisy, and has had previous roles in Civil War, The Secret Garden, The Wizard of Oz, Titanic, Mousetrap, Sweeney Todd and most recently as Rico in Copacabana. Who’s Who in Jesus Christ Superstar Kat Sewell (Soul Girl) Kat is becoming a welcome regular on The Henry Players' stage, previously appearing in The Women and Copacabana. She has also had roles in They Called Him Messiah and In the Fullness of Time with other theatre groups. Kat works at CorrectHealth and does some modeling and dancing as well. She and her husband, Stephen, will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on September 24. She is a five year member of the Spivey Hall Tour Choir. She is thrilled to be performing alongside her dad, Randy, whom she finally convinced to audition for a show! Randy Spicer (Apostle Bartholomew/Understudy for Simon Zealotes) Only once has Randy been in the company of The Henry Players. Affiliated with the ensemble, (as dad) he played the part of enthralled audience member. Though, in hindsight, he wasn't officially "playing" since he truly was enthralled with The Henry Players' production of Les Miserables. Like so many other parents, he has spent years of play-acting with the kids, imitating movie characters while reciting lines from favorite films. He's also been known to sing boldly and fearlessly into the shower head. ("The soap and shampoo LOVE ME…they really LOVE ME!") Tonight, you get to play the part of Simon Cowell and judge whether or not he should have left his act in the bathroom. He has his daughter, Kelly, to thank for getting him to step out from behind the curtain. He would like to thank Kelly for her support and encouragement. "I love you!" Thomas Werner (Apostle Thomas) Thomas recently played the role of John Arable in The Players' Charlotte's Web. He also acted in Ola High School's production of Cinderella, earlier this year. He has signed to play basketball at Atlanta Christian College where he is majoring in Biology. Bryan White (Apostle Thaddeus) Bryan is an outgoing, fun-loving dad who is not afraid of taking risks. This is his first experience with any theater performance, but he couldn't pass up the opportunity to share this with his daughter, Devyn. Bryan is an aircraft mechanic with Delta Air Lines and enjoys a variety of outdoor hobbies. He attends Crosspoint Christian Church where he has served as Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Praise Team Leader. Devyn Renee White (Soul Girl) Devyn is a home-schooled 11th grade student jointly enrolled at Paragon Academy with an "A" average. She is an energetic, outgoing individual with a gift for music. Although this is her first show with The Henry Players, she has been involved with dance and music since she was four years old and has participated in many performances including group 23

The Henry Players

Who’s Who in Jesus Christ Superstar and solo acts with Oxford Youth Singers in Covington. She plans to attend college and major in Musical Theater. Devyn is currently a red belt in karate, enjoys drawing, reading, singing and spending time with family and friends. She attends Crosspoint Christian Church in Conyers. Gary Wofford (Apostle Matthew) Gary has been on stage many times with The Henry Players. His credits include: Hello Dolly, A Christmas Carol, Titanic, Treasure Island, and Man of La Mancha. He has also performed in The Players' troupe show Death in Them Thar Hills. Gary currently works as a Claims Adjuster for a major insurance company. He would like to thank his family and friends for their support. He also wants to thank Damon and Matt for casting him in the show. Nichelle Young (Head Soul Girl) Nichelle performed this spring in The Players' Charlotte's Web. She has also appeared in productions of A Little Night Music at Lyric Opera Theatre and The Fantasticks and Godspell at Musical Theatre Arizona. Nichelle has a Bachelor of Music degree from Arizona State University. She enjoys teaching music to young audiences as well as teaching private voice lessons. She has played keyboard, danced and sung all over the United States and Canada for over 30 years. Mother of two beautiful girls, Orion and Alenia, and wife of 10 years to Levi, she wants to thank them for pushing her to do what she loves!
