KentPlayer – Using the software Please begin by making a short recording to test the software and hardware, and to familiarise yourself with the process. We recommend that you attempt to simulate the type of recording you will eventually make so, for instance, if you plan to use PowerPoint, enable that in your test recording. The latest version of the recorder is available from player.kent.ac.uk.
Recording on an Apple Mac 1. Open “Panopto Recorder” from the “Applications” folder. 2. Click the “Sign In” button (top‐right corner). In the window that pops up, if the server details are empty, enter “player.kent.ac.uk” then click Go. Note that if you have used the software previously you may need to click logout first. 3. The Kent login page should appear (if not, select “Get providers for server”, then ‘login with your Kent IT account’ from the drop‐down menu). 4. Log in with your usual Kent IT account details. Optionally, tick the “Remember me” box so that you won’t need to log in again. 5. You will now a list of existing recordings. Click “create new recording”. In the resulting window (see screen shot): 6. Select a “folder” to record to. For proper recordings this will be your Moodle module. For sample recordings, use your ‘unlisted recordings’ folder. 7. The session will be named with the date and time of the recording. To give your session a specific name, type into the text box below the folder name – including the date or week reference is recommended. 8. Select “Record Keynote/PowerPoint” only if you plan to use a presentation in your recording. This option will use the slide titles for navigation in the resulting recording. 9. Select Source “Built‐in Display” to capture everything which appears on your computer screen. 10. Select a video and audio source using the drop‐down lists. Choose “none” if you don’t wish to use a source, e.g. video. Note, however, that at least one primary source must be selected. 11. If applicable, open your presentation file. 12. Click the “Record” button to begin recording. During the recording, you can press the Pause button to pause and resume the recording where required. 13. Click the “Stop” button when you’re done.

Once the recording has finished Panopto will display the confirmation box shown below. You can rename the recording at this point, then delete it completely (!) or upload it to the server, where it is processed and packaged for online viewing.
The main Panopto window will display the status of the recording. Processing may take some time and you need not leave Panopto open. The top recording shown below is currently being processed on the server. It is safe to logout of Panopto and shut down the computer at this point.
You may also check the status of your recordings in any folder to which you have access on the player.kent.ac.uk server.
Managing recordings locally Each recording you make is stored locally on your computer, and so lots of recordings can take up a significant amount of space. You should therefore periodically remove the local copies of recordings, but only once you have confirmed that the recording has been successfully processed. To delete the local recording: 1. In the main window, which displays all existing recordings along with their current status, click on the recording you want to remove. 2. In the “Recording Details” box in the bottom‐left corner of the window, click the “delete” button. This will remove all of the recording’s files from your computer but it will remain on the server. For older recordings you may need to choose Actions then delete.
Software Problems Panopto can’t connect to the server and only allows me to make an “offline recording” Log out of Panopto and log in again. If the problem persists, make an offline recording and contact the helpdesk. Panopto won’t let me log in 1. Have you set up a Moodle module yet? If not then you won’t be able to use Panopto. See the lecture recording checklist for all the necessary steps prior to recording. 2. Make sure you choose ‘Get providers from server’ and then ‘Log in with your Kent IT Account’ instead of entering your login details straight away.
