CHRISTMAS WATCHING The snowman and the snow dog (Channel 4) is certain to be a favourite with anyone this Christmas. The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures: this year‟s theme is The Modern Alchemist and they will focus on air, water and earth. Somewhere in TV schedule land, there is bound to be a ballet and, of course, It’s a Wonderful Life, the world‟s best Christmas film. Bring on the mince pies!

NEW IN THE LIBRARY Between shades of gray by Ruta Sepetys We read a lot about the fate of holocaust victims in WW2, but much less about those deported by Stalin. This is a brilliant book about a Lithuanian family sent to the gulags and their struggles to survive. Wonderful, moving, heartbreaking.

Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi A great dystopian novel with an amazing heroine whose touch kills. Add to this a killer villain and you have a psychological rollercoaster ride of a book.

Fallen Grace by Mary Hooper An incredible book, thrilling but emotional, about a poor girl‟s struggles in Victorian London to keep her and her sister alive. Wonderfully written with great characters, a page-turner.

Running in heels by Helen Bailey Daisy Davenport is forced to live a less extravagant life after her dad goes to jail. Living above a kebab shop, going to a new school, coping with the school bully, there‟s a lot to adjust to. A fun read.

Jepp, who defied the stars by Katherine Marsh Set in the treacherous world of the 17th C. Spanish court, the hero Jepp needs all his courage to defy the odds stacked against him. Romantic and heart-warming.

Bright young things by Anna Godbersen It‟s the roaring twenties in New York in this historical Gossip Girl-style series. Two smalltown girls come to the big city to seek their fortune.

Zom-B by Darren Shan The master of horror tackles zombies! Expect gruesomeness. This is told from the point of view of one of the zombies.

Along for the ride by Sarah Dessen Auden learns, in her final summer before university, to let go and enjoy life. A great read with a sweet romance.

Nick & Norah’s infinite playlist The book the film was based on. It‟s about music, first dates and love as the new couple wander the streets of Manhatten by night.

Shelter by Harlen Coben A page-turning rollercoaster ride as Mickey Bolitar goes searching for his girlfriend who has disappeared without trace.

Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony & Rodrigo Corral A beautiful book that mixes text and images to create a love story that grabs you and confounds your expectations. This dark endeavour by Kenneth Oppel This gothic thriller is a prequel to Frankenstein and follows 17 year old Victor Frankenstein‟s attempts to save his twin.

Eleven Eleven by Paul Dowswell Set on the last day before the WW1 armistice, it‟s about three soldiers, a German, an American and a Briton. Who will live and who will die before the end of the day? Thrilling!

The cloud hunters by Alex Shearer Imagine a world of floating islands, where water is scarce and clouds must be hunted down by intrepid nomads. . Beauty by Robin McKinley A lovely re-telling of Beauty and the Beast for teenagers – it‟s deliciously romantic.

A world between us by Lydia Syson A love story set during the Spanish Civil War. Passionate nurse Felix follows a young man to the Spanish Civil War whilst another young man follows after her.

Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children by Ransom Riggs This book mixes fiction and photography and is part gothic adventure, part spine-tingling fantasy with an unforgettable story and great characters.

Trash by Andy Mulligan An action adventure about young people living on a rubbish dump and the deadly secret they find whilst sifting through the trash.

Reached by Ally Condie The final book of the Matched trilogy, a dystopian novel about the importance of family, love and, above all, being able to choose.
