WESTLAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Pastoral Reflections Easter calls us to imagine that change is possible, even though much about Easter will be a repeat of previous years. The sun rises at 7:11 a.m. and that is what time the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service will be at Evergreen Cemetery. On Maundy Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 p.m. we will gather around the table of the Fellowship Hall, eat soup, share fellowship, and the Lord’s Supper in a time of spiritual reflection.

Very often we wish to change situations in our midst more than our behaviors. For instance, I would like to get rid of the concept of a moment of silence and replace it with a period of silence. A moment could be 12 seconds and we are done.

Part of the Lenten season is One Great Hour of Sharing. It is March 10th. We join with a wide variety of Christians to give towards World Wide Relief. I am urging that we make this a most significant effort. We have neglected an intentional effort for Sandy Relief. I would propose that we each give extra this year, and that the amount be split with 50% designated for Sandy Relief and 50% for One Great Hour of Sharing. Last year we gave $2,039. Can we do better this year?

God grant me the wisdom to know the difference between the things I should change and the things that are not in my area of responsibility. Then, God give me to courage to seek change that is appropriate. Also, God give me the serenity to just simply accept that there are things that are not my responsibility.

But the change of Easter is not in activity (although the Choir will be singing a Cantata on Good Friday evening which is a significant change.) The change of Easter is in outlook, and perhaps even in our ability to live with a new perspective of our ability to change.

I would also like to change the serenity prayer into the Wisdom Prayer. This is actually more serious:

Seeking wisdom could and should be first in our lives. The balance between what we are responsible for and not responsible is key for every aspect of our lives. In Christ’s hope, Pastor John

Holy Week Events/Services Maundy Thursday: March 28th at 6:30 p.m. Simple Soup Supper and Service Good Friday Service: March 29th at 7:30 p.m. Labyrinth open 9 a.m.—9 p.m. (see pg. 4 for more information) Easter Sunday: March 31st Sunrise Service at the Evergreen Cemetery At 7:11 a.m. Easter Services at WUMC: 8:15 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 11:21 a.m.

Most people come to church for the first time because they were invited by a neighbor, friend, or acquaintance. There are many special worship services and family events this Holy Week for you to share your church home with someone who doesn’t have a church. On Easter, we would encourage anyone who is able to attend at the 8:15 a.m. or 11:21 a.m. services to make room in the pews for visitors at 10:00 a.m.

WUMC Performing Arts Series Presents: Concerts Doux Sunday, March 10th at 4 p.m. The WUMC Performing Arts Series presents an afternoon concert with Concerts Doux. Concerts Doux is a chamber ensemble specializing in music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods performing on the instruments of the time. The ensemble was formed in 2008 when Andrea Vallejo Wead and her husband Adam Wead were both students of the Early Music Institute at Indiana University. Andrea is a performer of Renaissance, Baroque and Modern Flutes, and Adam is a specialist on plucked instruments such as the lute and theorbo. Along with celebrated performances of their concert, Music from the Court of Louis XIV at the Boston and Bloomington Early Music Festivals, the ensemble has enjoyed performing throughout Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, and Massachusetts. FRIDAY, MARCH 29TH AT 7:30 P.M. Inspired by the life and message of Jesus Christ, artists in every medium have endeavored to capture the magnificence of His ministry among us. From poets and painters to singers and sculptors, the human spirit has long labored to convey through artistic expression the deep things of faith. On Good Friday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. the Chancel Choir will be presenting a cantata "The Lenten Sketches" by Joseph M. Martin. "The Lenten Sketches" focuses on some of the important scenes in the last days of Christ's life. Engravings by Gustave Doré (1832-1883) complement the music and help to portray the story of God's grace. The choir hopes you will plan to join us for this worship service.

Special Bible Study MOMS OF SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS STARTS MARCH 12TH AT 10:00 A.M. MEETS BI-WEEKLY FOR 6 SESSIONS

Labyrinth Walk GOOD FRIDAY, MARCH 29TH, 9 A.M.—9 P.M. IN FELLOWSHIP HALL Labyrinths can be thought of as symbolic forms of pilgrimage (in lieu of traveling to holy sites and lands). Walking the labyrinth (a guided path vs. a true maze) may help some achieve a contemplative state of prayer. Also, walking the labyrinth can introduce us to another type of prayer… prayer in motion, instead of prayer in absolute stillness. While some cathedrals have labyrinths laid in stone on their floors or grounds, our labyrinth is a temporary setup across the floor of Fellowship Hall. We walk the labyrinth in silence, respecting one another's private time in prayer. Walk in prayer for less than a half an hour or pause, kneel, mediate on the path for a few hours. Similar to golf, others may just respectfully “pray through.” Come, pray, and connect. If you anticipate a need for assistance to walk the labyrinth, please contact Carol Ryan via the church office (440) 871-3088.

Unlocking the Treasure: A Bible Study for Moms Entrusted with Special-Needs Children by Bev Rooseboom will be our resource. Come and find encouragement and hope for the journey. This Bible Study is open to the community. Free professional childcare is available. Reserve your spot by calling the church office at (440) 871-3088 or by sending an email: [email protected]. Please join us!

New Member Classes BEGIN IN APRIL Please let the office know if you are interested in learning more about membership at Westlake UMC. There are 3 orientation-type classes that support you as you become a member: Coffee with the Pastor, Spiritual Gifts Discovery, and Your Money Autobiography.

An Elegant Spaghetti Dinner — Saturday, March 9th, Seatings @ 5:00 & 6:30 p.m. Join us for a special night out with friends! There will be ambiance, music, fellowship, and more! Dinner will feature homemade cooking and allow all who come a chance to meet the Youth Summer Mission Team! Tickets available at the office, at the Youth Booth, and at the door. $10 for adults—all are welcome! All donations will help pay for the projects of this year’s mission. Thanks for your support!

Office Help Needed! Stephanie, our Office Manager, will be taking maternity leave sometime around the beginning of April (she is due April 7th). We need some volunteers to assist with light office work, mainly handling mail, and answering phones during this time. The morning hours are the most critical to cover as they are the busiest. Thanks to those who have already volunteered! If you can help—particularly on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, please let Stephanie or Rev. John know: [email protected] or (440) 871-3088. It would be ideal if you could sign up for one day a week (say every Monday from 9 to 12, etc), but any time you have would be welcome! The time frame is 5-6 weeks. Bring a book, bring your knitting, have a cup of coffee, and greet visitors in person or via telephone! Or, we might have a project or two for you to assist with (easy, we promise!).
