MBA-LS-1 Problem Solving & Communication Course details Instructors: Prof. Dr. Stephan Stubner Credits: 3,0 Language of instruction: English Learning objectives and outcomes: The course addresses the question of how to deal with new and complex management problems. As part of this course participants will get to know different methods and instruments like the Pyramid-Principle or InterviewTechniques for identifying, structuring and analyzing these problems as well as for communicating solutions. Special emphasis is given to the application of these methods in exercises and case studies. After the course, students will be able to deal with complex and challenging business problems, following a scientific approach. Through developing a group presentation, students also learn to cope with differing opinions and personalities. Content: The course addresses four aspects of the problem solving process: • Identifying problems • Structuring problems • Analyzing problems • Communicating solutions Teaching Methods: The course uses a combination of lectures, discussions, self studies, case studies and team assignments. In order to allow first self study, the students receive comprehensive reading material and additional references in advance. Conditions for credit points and grades: The grade of the course is determined by the weighted average of the single grades of the examinations. The course contains the following examinations: • Group assignment, presentation (100 %) Grades range from 1 to 5 (very good to failing). Workload: The course “Problem Solving & Communication” accounts for 3 ECTS, which are equivalent to a total workload of 90 hours (approx. 24 hours of classes and 66 hours of preparation and self study).
