The goal of Communication for Nurses: Talking with Patients is to retrofit your communication skills with techniques that will withstand the stressful healthcare environment to help you become a better communicator. The book first takes a look at the CCM ethical, legal, and professional guidelines for communication as a facet AACN-C of nursing care. Interviewing skills are reviewed as both a science and an art. Next, the book examines communication with specific patient populations and situations. How do you deal with a patient in a crisis situation? How do you communicate with an intubated patient? These are some of the topics that provide practical approaches to difficult communication situations. They are intended to serve as guidelines for when you are at a loss for words. Priorities in Critical Care Nursing

Emergency Nursing Mosby’s Emergency Nursing Reference does an excellent job of addressing each body system and common chief complaints AACN-A and procedures from the perspective of the ED nurse: initial presentation, differential diagnoses, diagnostic tests and procedures, expected outcomes, and discharge instructions. Special features:

This text was written for practitioners of critical care, clinical nurse specialists, and critical care educators, but not the novice AACN-A to critical care. It implies an understanding of anatomy and physiology and basic pathophysiology and the management of more common aspects of acutely ill patients. This text addresses the controversies in critical care management—the emerging truths that threaten old myths—and bridges the gap between medical research and animal model research in critical care and today’s bedside practice. It advances the professional knowledge of the critical care nurse to a high degree.

• Nursing Alerts highlight crucial considerations for ED personnel. • Nursing Care Priorities highlight the most common diagnoses for a clinical condition, as well as possible causes, signs and symptoms, and interventions. • 22 common clinical conditions are covered. • 37 procedures are outlined in a clear, step-bystep format – including nine new procedures. • Age-specific considerations provide pediatric and geriatric information. • New: Safety in the ED; triage; and chemical, radiation, and biologic exposure.

We decided to offer this course after a conversation with a nurse who teaches dialysis classes all over the US. She recommended this book, saying that it’s found in every dialysis unit in the country, and is one of the books nurses refer to when they have questions. It is a high level book, written by physicians. The course will offer a wealth of information for nurses (experienced or inexperienced) working in the dialysis setting. It will help them understand the rationale behind physician orders. The handbook provides information on all aspects of dialysis, with emphasis on day-to-day management of patients. Chapters provide complete coverage of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, special problems in dialysis patients, and problems pertaining to various organ systems. New: • National Kidney Foundation’s KDOQI guidelines (2006) concerning hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis adequacy, vascular access, and nutrition, plus KDOQI chronic kidney disease and bone disease guidelines. • How to set up frequent daily or nocturnal hemodialysis, and hemodiafiltration. • Completely revised and expanded chapters on vascular access, with emphasis on AV fistula creation.
