More garbage from Packt By Dimitri Shvorob Good books published by Packt do exist, but are outnumbered by low-quality quickies, often coming from the Indian subcontinent. This is one of those: an ultra-superficial, typo-littered, confused and confusing mess. Don't give a second thought to this POS. Go for “Data Mining with Microsoft SQL Server 2008” by MacLennan and Tang, and online resources – there are even free books from Microsoft – for Azure Machine Learning and HDInsight. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Terrible, terrible book by seemingly terrible, terrible authors. By HortonHearsAWho Simply put, this is a terrible example of delivering information about a software product. The examples seem to skip randomly between things that exist in the Adventure Works DW to things that the authors have developed but not given anything but passing mention to. Their attempts to illustrate functionality have them showing endless property screens but very often they do not bother to give a clear example of the paths to those screens. As a result they will be levels deep on a screen trying to explain some small bit of functionality, but they have not shown specifically where that screen is to be found.

The editing is suspect as well. It is as if the editor took passages submitted by both authors, threw the passages in a blender and then, without understanding the material clearly themselves (editor), tried to re-sequence the blended bits in some manner akin to chaos theory. While it seems clear that the authors know the product reasonably well, it is not clear at all that they can clearly explain it. Even the sentence structure is suspect. Anyone who purchased this book should be given a refund and extra money simply for putting up with this feeble attempt to make money by purporting to provide valuable insight. 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
