Reading Skills 2012/2013 Reading Skills is a 60-minute yearlong course specifically designed to improve basic reading and writing skills. Enrollment in this class is based on teacher recommendation and is usually IEP driven. Content and skills vary based on the specific needs of the individuals in the current class. •
Specific skills addressed: o Oral reading – rate, accuracy and comprehension o Silent reading – rate and comprehension o Word Attack – learning specific “sound pictures”, chunks, and multi-syllable words o Written expression – restating question in answer form, sentence structure, paragraph structure, some punctuation marks, spelling o Reading comprehension – making sense of what is read and utilizing and mastering the 7 Habits of Good Readers o Use of assistive technology – speech-to-text and text-to-speech when appropriate

Grading is equally divided among the categories below. Students with Timed Readings Plus program have an average of five grades; the other students average four grades. o Homework – Points are received for timeliness. o Participation – Generally in the form of oral reading, note taking and class discussion. o Written work – This includes all written activities, reading comprehension assignments, discussion questions from stories and actual grades from assigned homework. o Timed Readings Plus – Some students will read from specifically leveled books to improve silent-reading rate, literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, and vocabulary.
