REDLAND HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS SPRING 2016

This term our Classics, Art and Drama Departments worked together to create an impression of The Golden Stairs by Edward Burne-Jones, a 1880 painting that shows a community of young women descending a staircase with their musical instruments. The A Level Photography students got some striking shots of our wondeful pupil population.

Pirates

Redland High Juniors Orienteering Team - RHOK

In Upper Foundation our girls and boys have enjoyed the theme of ‘Pirates’. They read ‘The Pirates Next Door’ by Jonny Duddle which led them to some interesting conversations about their neighbours and why it is important to be a good neighbour. Tessa felt that it was important to, “Say something nice to them,” and Isla pointed out that it was good to, “Share cake with your neighbour and be friendly.” Both very good pieces of advice! They also got to know Peter Pan and recreated their own 'We're following the leader' scene. They practised following each other in a long line using a variety of movements including hopping, skipping, stretching, jumping and marching. In the classroom the children used very careful scissor control to cut out tick-tocking crocodiles and feathers for Indian Headdresses and decorated them using a range of zig-zag patterns and dots. They look so good that Tiger Lily would be very proud! Everyone had so much fun with this theme and learned a lot along the way. The topic definitely echoed the sentiments of Pan himself when he said, "It is not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do, that is the secret of happiness."

Over the past few years, Redland High Juniors Orienteering Team (RHOK), has gone from strength to strength, engaging many girls with the wonderful sport of orienteering. Although the pupils compete individually, their community spirit is fantastic. Within the team, the support of friends is highly valued and at the finish line, Redland Girls are certainly the most enthusiastic in their support! In the wider Orienteering community too, the RHOK runners are well known. As well as being very successful competitively, their good sportsmanship regularly earns glowing comments from adults who have nothing to do with the school. These include praise for their manners, maturity and even for helping other runners (some much older than them) to find their way if they have become misplaced. Having won the schools’ league last year, we look on track to be in the battle for retaining the title and look forward to taking a team to the British Schools Championships in November.

Success in the community Future Problem Solving

Go4Set

This February pupils from Years 8 to 10 took part in the Future Problem Solving (FPS) finals at QEH. FPS is a scenario-based competition that allows students to learn about researching, brainstorming and analysis. Over 20 schools took part, including teams from Red Maids' school and QEH boys’ school, but Redland High girls saw off the competition. In the Middle Division we came first and second in the country, with Year 8 pupil Rachel Raynes achieving a bronze medal award. We couldn’t be more delighted for our girls as this is the most fiercely contested group, and our teams were up against talented pupils from across the UK.

Senior Schools' Art Exhibition Redland High student Aaliyah Robinson’s still-life oil painting was named as overall winner at the Senior Schools’ Art Exhibition at Bristol Cathedral! The exhibition showcased artwork from students across 18 Bristol schools. This is such a fantastic achievement when so many schools in the city submitted work, and we are very proud of her achievement. Other Redland High winners include Charlotte Godfrey who was awarded a Commendation and Kelsey Iles who got a Special Merit.

Two Year 9 teams from Redland High took on this year’s Go4Set challenge. Teams had to select a project to research and develop a plan to tackle the project-brief involving internet research, practical experiments, model making and report writing. For both teams, the project chosen was My School is an Island. The idea was to look at relocating Redland to an island location anywhere in the world. Means of supplying the energy, transport and waste management were all considered. Both teams had very creative ideas and Team A – who were named as most creative - included windows containing algae, the idea being that as the sun shone, the algae would use the light energy to multiply, and they could then be harvested and turned into biofuel!

 Young Voices

Redland High Senior School was very pleased to have been accepted to perform at the O2 Arena on Thursday 28 January as part of a series of Young Voices concerts taking place around the country. Our Junior School were also invited to sing at the Genting Arena in Birmingham as part of the programme on Friday 15 January. Young Voices provides exciting musical opportunities for primary and secondary school musicians. The concert at Genting was made up of over 6000 pupils and the one at the O2 saw around 8000 students take part. The girls had been rehearsing since September and performances included a variety of current pop songs, ‘World in Union’, a Madness medley and some traditional Gospel songs too. The girls did a fantastic job and did Redland High proud.

Spanish Tapas with QEH and Red Maids

Visit from Chinese pupils This January we were delighted to welcome students from China. Rachel, Tiffany and Josie, who are from Tianjin, and Melody who is from Shanghai, spent the week studying at Redland High alongside pupils in Year 8. Rachel was here for her birthday and the girls wanted to make sure Rachel got to celebrate despite being so far from home, so with the help of Miss Drew and Miss Leach, they made her a beautiful birthday cake featuring Redland High’s emblem, the Daisy flower, and sang happy birthday to her during break. Across the rest of the week the guests managed to cram a lot in, including dinner at their new friends’ houses, lots of exciting clubs and classes and on Friday night, they all had a great time at the QEH House Music Finals.

On Friday 5th February, the Spanish Department organised a Tapas and Quiz night at La Tomatina on Park Street, with QEH and Red Maids' school an occasion our Year 11, 12 and 13 Spanish students thoroughly enjoyed. They experienced the culinary delights of Spanish food with a large selection of Tapas, and at the same time they tested their knowledge of not only Spanish language but also Spanish culture. Our teams performed brilliantly and they emerged victorious. Overall a gratifying, pleasurable and scrumptious evening! Window Wanderland

Classics perfomance

Bristol hosts an annual community event called Window Wanderland. For this particular event, residents in the local area create displays in their windows for other people to see and enjoy. Mrs Hunt, our Textiles teacher, chose to showcase some of the girls' work in her window, including Year 7 bags, Year 8 skirts, sock creatures, an A Level dress and an outfit made by assembling items from various school production costumes. They gained a great deal of admiration from passers-by!

Our cover image is from the photoshoot arranged by our Classics, Art and Drama Departments. As mentioned on page 1, they combined forces to recreate The Golden Stairs by Edward Burne - Jones. As you can see by comparing with the original, which is hung in the Tate Britain, they did a great job of putting a Redland High spin on a classic image.
