Preparation – Make a copy of the worksheet for each student. Cut out the cards at the bottom.

Timing – 30 mins

Procedure 1. Elicit from students the names of the African countries with teams in the World Cup (Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa). Prompt by writing the German on the board if necessary. If level permits, ask students what they know about the countries, e.g. where exactly are they? 2. Divide the class into groups of six. Note: in smaller classes students should only talk to two others at stage five. 3. Give each student a copy of the top half of the worksheet and one of the cards cut away from the bottom. 4. Explain to the students that they now have a new identity and come from one of the African countries with a world cup team. They will need to talk to each other to fill in the table on the map. Elicit from the students the questions they will need to ask. These are: – What’s your name? How do you spell that? – Where are you from? How do you spell that? – How old are you? – What do you do / What’s your job? / What’s your occupation? – What do you do in your free time / What are your hobbies? 5. Students mingle within their group. Each student talks to three others, taking it in turns to ask and answer questions, filling in the three columns of the table. 6. The students sit back down. With the whole class, the teacher asks six people, one by one, to present one of the people they have spoken to. They should say, “This is Eric, from Yoko. That’s a town in Cameroon,” and so on. If the level permits, the other students could ask the person being presented some more basic questions.
