from “Self‐Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Group Members:
In this essay, Emerson encourages readers to avoid blindly conforming to the ideas and behavior dictated by society or peers. He instead urges people to think and act independently. Directions: In your group, read the passage on pages 366‐367 out loud, and then discuss the following questions. Be sure to have a scribe record your answers. 1. Why would self‐reliance have been an especially essential quality for people to possess during Emerson’s day (1830s‐1840s)? 2. Reread the first 13 lines of the excerpt. Do you agree that every person comes to these realizations? Why or why not? 3. Do you agree with Emerson’s assertion that only one’s best efforts will bring satisfaction? Why or why not? Discuss any of your own experiences that illustrate your opinion. 4. Do you agree with Emerson that society, by definition, breeds conformity? Or do you believe that there’s room within it for self‐reliance and individuality? Support your views with examples.
5. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, which required people to return runaway slaves to the owners, Emerson became an active and vocal abolitionist. He remarked that anyone building a house should include space in it for fugitive slaves. How does Emerson’s position on slavery relate to his statement in this essay that “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind”? 6. One of Emerson’s most famous statements comes from this essay: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” (A “hobgoblin” is an object of fear or dread, which is often personified as an ugly elf or goblin.) This statement is often misquoted—the first two words are omitted. How does the omission of those two words changes Emerson’s meaning? 7. Emerson says, “Speak what you think now in hard words and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict everything you said today.” What Emerson describes might be called “waffling” or “flip‐flopping” today. What do you think about his idea of the acceptability of self‐contradiction? 8. How does Emerson support his claim that “to be great is misunderstood”? 9. Which of Emerson’s statements, if any, would you choose as a guideline for personal conduct? Explain. 10. Transcendentalism is a purely American philosophy. What aspects of today’s American culture reflect Emerson’s belief in self‐reliance?
