A-Level Chemistry
Objectives
The aim of this subject is to enable students to understand organic chemistry through a study of the basic reaction types, the basic principles and the uses of common spectroscopic techniques available for functional group identification. Illustration will be emphasized on reactions and compounds with structural interest or industrial importance.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to: 1. recognize simple alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alkyl halides and know the hybridization of each functional group; 2. be able to name in a systematic manner (IUPAC) simple organic compounds such as alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alkyl halides; 3. be able to recognize and distinguish the three major types of isomers (constitutional, configurational and conformational); 4. understand the following simple mechanisms: electrophilic addition, free radical halogenation, SN2, SN1, E1, E2 and electrocyclic reactions such as the carbene and Diels-Alder reaction; 5. predict reactivity of various basic reactions in different conditions, know about 30 organic reactions and be able to use them in organic synthesis; 6. recognize the basic principles of mass spectrometry, UV, IR and proton NMR spectroscopies and select suitable method for functional group identification.
Subject Synopsis/ Indicative Syllabus
We will cover chapters 1-14 of McMurry textbook. Students should read each chapter before it is covered in class. 1. Structure and Bonding 2. Polar Covalent Bonds; Acids and Bases 3. Organic Compounds: Alkanes and Their Stereochemistry 4. Organic Compounds: Cycloalkanes and Their Stereochemistry 5. An Overview of Organic Reactions 6. Alkenes: Structure and Reactivity 7. Alkenes: Reactions and Synthesis 8. Alkynes: An Introduction to Organic Synthesis 9. Stereochemistry 10. Organohalides 11. Reactions of Alkyl Halides: Nucleophilic Substitutions and Eliminations 12. Structure Determination: Mass Spectrometry and Infrared Spectroscopy 13. Structure Determination: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy 14. Conjugated Compounds and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy
11.2010
Chapters 15-26 of McMurry will be covered in ABCT342. Students taking ABCT242 are expected to follow up with ABCT342 for a complete course in organic chemistry.
Teaching/Learning Methodology Assessment Methods in Alignment with Intended Learning Outcomes
The basic reaction mechanism and basic principles of spectroscopic methods will be delivered by lectures. Students are encouraged to ask questions for clarifying the concepts and guided by solving problems in the tutorial sessions.

Textbook: John McMurry, "Organic Chemistry, 7th Edition" Brooks-Cole Publishing Co., 2008 is required. You should read each chapter before its lecture. "Study Guide & Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry" by Susan McMurry is recommended. All students are encouraged to buy their own copy of the textbook, which will be used as texts for the duration of level 2 and level 3 studies in organic chemistry courses. .
