DESCRIPTION Distributed control system (DCS) technicians work on measuring and controlling instruments. They service plant process control systems, as well as monitoring, safety and communications systems. As a DCS technician, you will know about all the systems and processes in a mill. Most importantly, you will understand how these systems and processes interact with each other. Key skills for DCS technicians include manual dexterity, ability to pay attention to detail, strong problem-solving and communication skills, and mathematical and scientiic aptitude. In this role, you will work with other tradespeople and professionals like process operators, steamitters, pipeitters, welders, industrial mechanics (millwrights), electricians and engineers. As you gain experience, you may act as a mentor and trainer to apprentices in the trade. Your career track could see you move into supervisory, design, advanced control, training or sales positions. No matter what path you choose as a DCS technician, if you choose forestry you’ll know that every time you head to work, you can look forward to being happy with the lifestyle you’ve earned.

DCS technicians perform a wide range of technical forestry functions. On any given day at a mill, you might: consult diagrams and technical documents like schematics manuals standards and codes maintain backup information for control systems and instruments conigure and program programmable logic controllers PLC distributed control systems (DCS), human machine interface (HMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) inspect and test instruments and systems to diagnose faults remove repair adjust and replace components work with mill operators to optimize the mill s controls

Getting a high school diploma or an equivalent qualiication is usually required. After that, you will need to complete a four- or ive-year apprenticeship program. Another option is to complete a two-year college program in industrial instrumentation technology, but several years of work experience are usually still required for trade certiication. As an apprentice, you get training while earning a pay cheque and building a career as a highly skilled worker. interprovincial red seal endorsement is also available to allow your skills to be oicially recognized across Canada.
