HI, MY NAME IS SAILOR. My two siblings and I were found at four weeks of age outside an abandoned house by a very nice woman who volunteers for Standish. All of our eyes were sealed shut Pictured above, Sailor after rescue. with pus. She quickly Pictured below to the right, Sailor took us to a veterinarafter surgery. ian who diagnosed serious infections for all of us, with my situation as the worst. My right eye was bulging out of its socket and soon ruptured. The veterinarian prescribed lots of medications, warm compresses and a moist environment with a humidifier running 24/7 and lots of TLC. All of those things are right up the alley of a dedicated Standish volunteer! After some time and lots of followup visits to the veterinarian, we were all much improved and had regained some vision. There was one thing though: the veterinarian said that my right eye was not going to heal and it needed to be removed very soon to stop my infection and suffering. The big word for this
procedure is eye “enucleation” and the big word carried a big price tag! The volunteer and Standish had already spent lots of money on my situation and what would happen now? A smart person at Standish (and there are many of those people) said: what if we asked our supporters to donate and help Sailor out? Bingo! Postings went onto our website and Facebook Page and the donations and good wishes poured in! Standish’s wonderful supporters came through for me and I soon had my surgery. And guess what? I am now a happy, playful and healthy kitty living the good life in my Forever Home and it is all due to the love and amazing generosity of Standish and its donors. Now, I have one more favor to ask of you: please consider adopting a special needs kitty; we are super-special! THANKS!

STANDISH HUMANE SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS Nancy Cullen, President Julianne Salamone, Vice President Kathleen Bergeron, Treasurer Elaine Richardson, Clerk Lynn Allain Barbara Ayotte Jane Deger Klaire Perkins Brenda Williamson
SHELTER DIRECTOR Julia Fratalia
Standish Humane Society was founded in 1969 and has done so many wonderful things over the years. It has grown from a network of foster homes providing cat adoption services during the early years into a thriving multi-faceted humane organization with two cat adoption centers, Holmes House in Duxbury and within the PetSmart store in Braintree, as well as a renowned reduced cost spay/neuter program for cats and dogs. Standish has also long maintained a medical assistance fund to help animals in need and this year has established “The Elvis Feral Fund” to provide financial assistance to individuals and organizations devoted to alleviating the feral cat over-population problem. This fund was inspired by Elvis, one of many feral and stray cats that have been helped by our Board Member Klaire Perkins. As an organization, Standish is not involved “on the ground” in the trap/neuter/release feral cat campaign since we believe that we need to keep our focus directed to our primary mission and deploy our resources effectively to best help animals. We are so grateful that others have as their primary mission to help the feral cats and we are committed to assisting them as they carry out their vital work. The seed capital for The Elvis Feral Fund was provided to Standish by a “workout of the day” fundraiser run by Cynergy Crossfit in Hanson. Many thanks to these wonderful people who raised $2,000 for The Elvis Feral Fund! Our first beneficiary of this fund is Lucy Murch of Kingston. Many thanks to Lucy for her tireless work to help the cats and end animal suffering. Please visit our website to read “The Story of Elvis” and learn about giving opportunities for The Elvis Feral Fund. — Nancy Cullen

WIN GREAT PRIZES WHILE HELPING KITTIES!! Yes, it’s time! Time for our annual benefit drawing! Our annual benefit drawing coupons are on page 11 and the remittance envelope is enclosed. Scan the list of prizes on page 10 and send the coupons our way as soon as possible. There’s something for everyone! We will be drawing the raffle at our Volunteer Luncheon on January 26 — and will contact winners promptly. If you would like to obtain additional coupons, you can simply photocopy the sheet or download an additional sheet from our website. Please invite your neighbors, coworkers and family members to join in the fun! We have enjoyed great support for our drawing in past years and we hope that you can help us again this year. The proceeds of the drawing are much needed and will be put to good use to run our essential adoption and reduced-cost spay/ neuter programs.
AMAZON.COM WISH LIST Standish has long maintained a “wish list” on our website and has spread the word of our shelter needs through our newsletters and Facebook Page, but this year we took a new step and added an Amazon.com wish list to our website and the results were astounding. Immediately after posting this list asking for food, baby scales, scratching posts and many other items, the deluge of donated items began. The doorbell rang nonstop with deliveries arriving from UPS, Federal Express and caring individuals who did personal dropoffs of necessities. We are so grateful that we have such computer literate supporters who tell us that giving via Amazon.com is so easy and rewarding. Heartfelt thanks to all of you for your overwhelming generosity!
SPOTLIGHT ON A STANDISH SUPPORTER Refrains often heard around Holmes House are “yikes, the washing machine is leaking!” and “help, the sink is not working right” and, well, just use your imagination and make up your own refrain! Life in a busy cat shelter with the constant washing of bedding, towels, litter boxes and bowls involves plumbing challenges and when those challenges arise, we call Mark Nickerson, owner of Mark Nickerson Plumbing & Heating in Duxbury. Mark always comes to the rescue, often at inconvenient times, and then refuses to accept any payment, instead requesting that his services be treated as a donation to Standish! Mark is a wonderful person who does outstanding work and we highly recommend that you call Mark for your plumbing needs to thank him for his generosity to Standish. He can be reached at 781-223-2649.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS We are pleased to announce that Lynn Allain and Brenda Williamson were elected to the Board of Directors in June. Lynn is a retired attorney who became a Standish volunteer after relocating from New Orleans to Plymouth with her husband Francois and three cats during 2012. Lynn has been instrumental in developing
new adoption promotions techniques, including doing cat videos and setting them to music! Brenda has been a Standish volunteer for several years, working in the shelter and playing an important role in our outreach activities and community events. Brenda is the general manager of a busy commercial and industrial
insulation company where she puts her “herding cats” skills to good use. Brenda and her husband Mark, children James and Jessica and their six cats live in Plympton. Many thanks to Lynn and Brenda for their commitment to Standish. Welcome aboard!

FALL 2013 Tall Tails
THE SIGN SAID “PLEASE HELP FIND HONEYBEAR” As one of Standish’s volunteers entered her local post office she noticed a sign that said “Please help find HoneyBear, a sweet 12 year old Siamese cat who escaped from her house when the house cleaner left a door open. She won’t last long in the outdoors!” The sign indicated that HoneyBear had already been missing for five days. How does one help in a situation like this? HoneyBear’s owner had done a good job so far by posting an eye-catching sign with a color photo included and by notifying all of her neighbors to watch for HoneyBear. It is very rare for indoor cats to leave their immediate neighborhood when they find themselves outside as the stress of the situation causes them to hide and not even respond to their owner’s voice. The key to catching such a frightened kitty is to quickly set up a humane trap baited with smelly and tasty tuna in the area where the cat was last seen. This trap must then be monitored frequently
and re-baited as necessary. The wonderful news for HoneyBear is that she was found in a Standish humane trap on the tenth day after her escape and she returned to her loving home. Not many escapes end as happily as HoneyBear’s did and the question is how do these escapes happen and how can we prevent them? The key is vigilance in both our everyday lives and in “special” circumstances. Be careful around doors when entering and leaving your house; make sure that all windows are closed or have screens that are in good condition and clicked securely into their tracks. If you have a portable air-conditioner, make sure that the side panels are sturdy and bolted into the walls. Just this summer, two cats adopted from Standish escaped their new homes by pushing AC unit panels open; only one of these kitties has been found. If you have a service person coming into your house to do work, especially if you aren’t home at the time, put the cat behind closed doors in a safe room with a “do not enter” sign. Tell service people and all visitors that you have a cat and to be careful and watchful. These cats are part of our families and deserve the best care! For great tips on how to find a lost cat, please go to www.u.s.wikihow.com/Find-a-Lost.Cat.
SUBARU’S “SHARE THE LOVE” CAMPAIGN Each year Subaru of America runs its “Share the Love” campaign pursuant to which it donates up to $10 million to selected charities for new cars sold or leased at year-end. In past years the charities included only five “national” charities, but this year Subaru permitted each dealership to choose a “local” charity to add to the list. We are ecstatic to announce that Planet Subaru in Hanover, a longtime Platinum Sponsor of DoggiePawLooza, has selected Standish Humane Society to be its local charity! Here is how the campaign works: for each new car sold or leased at Planet Subaru from November 21, 2013 through January 2, 2014, Subaru will donate $250 to the charity chosen by the car buyer. Subaru is the car of choice of many of Standish’s Board Members and volunteers and Planet Subaru is a shining example
of a business that “gets it.” Planet Subaru, known as the “undealership” for its relaxed and honest approach to selling cars in its environmentally advanced showroom, is deeply committed to making the world a better place for animals. Please consider buying “Blue,” Planet’s Showroom dog at or leasing a new Subaru at DoggiePawlooza 2013. Planet Subaru and spread the word to your family, friends, neighbors and work colleagues. Let’s make sure that this “Share the Love” campaign results in the largest corporate gift in Standish’s history! Standish Humane Society | 5

Cats Helping Dogs Although Standish’s primary activity is cat adoption, we also care deeply about dogs. Each year Standish provides reduced-cost spay/neuter services for a great many dogs and substantial financial assistance to local animal control officers for medical needs of rescued animals. Rusty, a three year old English Cocker Spaniel that was abandoned in a town forest, was a recent beneficiary of Standish’s support. Rusty was severely underweight, badly matted and covered in ticks. It was clear to
the animal control officer that this nice dog would need a lot of help, so she picked up the telephone and dialed Standish. Standish quickly stepped in and provided the funds to have Rusty examined by a veterinarian, tested for heartworm and other diseases, vaccinated and neutered. After all of the veterinary care, Rusty was sent to the grooming salon for some TLC and pampering and became a glamor doggie! Thanks to Standish, Rusty was quickly adopted and is enjoying a new “leash” on life!!

ADOPT ME! My name is Bonnie and I am the little sis of “Cover Boy” Sailor! I am still on the journey to my Forever Home and would love to find a family as wonderful as Sailor’s new family. Like Sailor, I also had severe eye problems when I was rescued, but luckily I didn’t need surgery. Thanks to the loving care of my
rescuer, my eyes were saved! If I do say so myself, I am a very sweet and happy kitty who ADORES other felines!! Do you have a cat (or two) that would welcome me into your home and let me cuddle and join in playtime? If the answer is “yes”, please call or email Standish at once! Bonnie

CAT CARE CORNER
GOOD HEALTH THROUGH DENTAL CARE According to veterinary sources, 85% of cats have periodontal disease by 3 years of age. Periodontal disease is disease around the outside of the tooth. What you see when you look into your cat’s mouth (or your own mouth) is the crown of the tooth which extends to the gumline. Beneath the gum are the root and the ligaments that attach the root to the bone. When bacteria in the mouth mix with saliva, plaque forms and coats the tooth. When the teeth are not rinsed or cleaned regularly, this plaque hardens into tartar which blocks oxygen and changes the type of bacteria that live around the tooth. These bacteria are very harmful to the bone and tissues of the gum as they cause infection, cavities, decay, damage the periodontal ligament, and result in dental loss. A cat’s teeth are exactly like human teeth with blood vessels and nerves that feed the roots and the “bad” bacteria can travel through the blood stream and cause infection throughout the body and its major organs. The infections and decay also cause pain, give your pet bad breath, hinder eating and make life miserable. It is difficult for people to examine a cat’s mouth, so dental issues are often overlooked. It is very important to have your cat examined annuallly by a veterinarian who will include a oral exam as part of the visit. How do we know if a cat should have its teeth cleaned? The answer depends on the cat. Just as in people, cats build up plaque and tartar at different rates and many cats have immune problems that cause inflammation of the gums and oral cavity.
Please note that a thorough dental cleaning requires anesthesia. Anesthesia allows the veterinarian to work in the mouth safely and effectively and it protects the cat’s airway to block water and bacteria from going into the lungs. What is actually done during a dental procedure: tartar, both around and below the gumline, is removed, periodontal sockets are measured and probed to check for disease and disease severity, roots are scraped until they are smooth, enamel is polished, the mouth is disinfected and treated with a sealant, and a dental chart is marked to note abnormalities of the cats 30 adult teeth. Dental x-rays are often required to assess disease in the roots or surrounding sockets and tooth extractions may be needed that would require intraoral nerve blocks. Without anesthesia, none of these vital procedures would be possible. Once your cat has a dental procedure, your veterinarian can teach you what to do on a regular basis to maintain dental care at home. People brush and floss as well as go to a dental hygienist; imagine what our dental health would be like if we never brushed, flossed or went to the dentist! Remember, as much as we think otherwise, cats cannot talk and they are experts at hiding pain and illness! It is always best to do preventive care on a regular basis to give your kitty a happy, healthy and long life. . Dr. Ann Thompson Manomet Animal Hospital, Plymouth, MA Standish Humane Society Volunteer Veterinarian
