Every four years, linguists, cultural specialists and teachers of German from throughout the world gather together to exchange ideas and share experiences at the largest event relating to German language teaching and culture. This year the fourteenth international German teacher’s conference [XIV. Internationale Deutschlehrertagung (IDT)] took place in Jena and Weimar in Thuringia from 3rd to 8th August under the motto “Move up with German” Cornelsen was one of the main sponsors and suppliers of the IDT and the Cornelsen stand proved to be a popular meeting point for the German teachers present. The numerous work-

shops presenting materials for German as a Foreign Language also offered the attendees a wide variety of opportunities to get to know Cornelsen publications better. A presentation of the multimedia components of studio d achieved the most popularity, with an audience of over 150: Professor Hermann Funk and the studio d author and editorial team introduced interactive whiteboard materials, curriculum planners and the new studio d B2. Cornelsen Verlag CEO Hartmuth Brill received the visitors at the reception that followed. There were numerous opportunities to talk business in a relaxed atmosphere.

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

Promoting learning success in the digital age Variety of educational media in schools The plan made headlines worldwide. E-books were ‘in’ and printed books were ‘out’ for California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wanted to introduce free digital books into classrooms by the beginning of the new school year. Unfortunately only 16 such PDF books were available at the start of the new classes and the teachers’ union scoffed, “Before we invest in such expensive toys we should buy new print versions of school books”. Schools also complained of inadequate IT equipment and lack of professional training for teachers in this field.

Yet in other countries too, not least in Germany, requirements and reality are still poles apart and the use of IT in school education is still developing. This difficult atmosphere is the environment in which educational publishers – including Cornelsen – are trying to place their digital products. The gatekeepers of IT use in schools – and at the same time the most important target group for publishers – are the teachers. Although they may be “heavy users” of Web 2.0 and cloud computing in private life, their

teacher training offers too little input on teaching and learning using computers and the Internet. As a result of the observation that 49% of (also older) teachers in Germany nevertheless use their computers “very often” for preparation, Cornelsen has developed “Digital Lesson Planners” to accompany its teaching publications. These planners contain digitalised pages of the book, multimedia elements to fit the course book, a digital curriculum planner which is able to allocate the available content and units to match exactly the number of

lesson periods available as well as detailed guidelines on how to use the book in lessons. A further example: the everpresent requirement for progress and diagnostic tests and individual learner support is catered for by means of Cornelsen’s Online Diagnosis Server. Teachers are able to create test logins for their children on this site, the students complete an online test and teachers can access a detailed evaluation within minutes and are able to select suitable supporting materials, print them off and hand them to their students for extra practice. Publishing houses – including Cornelsen – produced further products in response to the much more advanced digitalisation of private learning. Numerous software products from Cornelsen use the current entertainment genre in order to promote learning success, for example: the “Lextra” – detective stories, the Serious Games from the “Genius” Series, based on simulation software such as Sims, Maths and English trainers for Nintendo DS, and practice software for Business English or German, which can be downloaded onto iPods and iPhones from Apple’s AppStore.

The central role in the entertaining detective stories for learners of German is played by private detective Patrick Reich. Blackmail, theft, kidnapping or murder – whatever the case, Patrick Reich is your man. Although each “LernKrimi” story is separate in itself,

The future perspective indicates that learning and knowledge acquisition will increasingly take place online and by means of digital equipment. This development is facilitated by fast Internet connections (also in public places), the rapid spread of reasonably priced mobile end units such as netbooks and smart phones and the convergence of major media systems such as television, radio and the Internet. Schools face the challenge that their own complex and faultprone computer networks and computer rooms will increasingly be replaced by Cloud

Computing and students’ own private equipment. School authorities will realise that these

learning scenarios complement and support differentiated and individualised learning in the age of full-day schooling, mixed age and mixed ability groups. More and more digital products are thus being developed around printed course books. These latter still have their place in the classroom, along with the student’s laptop. Schwarzenegger, governor of IT-wonderland California, should perhaps have faith in his teachers and buy them more printed textbooks ;-). Gunter Becker Screenshots from ‘Liebe bis in den Tod’

Cornelsen Vocational Training has up to now largely been known to our business partners through its English language materials. Series such as “Focus on . . .”, “Matters” and “Baustein . . .” have been very popular with their users for a long time. In order to take advantage of the opportunities for publishers which are arising as a result of the globalisation of the labour market, Cornelsen is expanding its range of vocational training materials. The emphasis of this expansion will include on the one hand the interdisciplinary subjects such as mathematics, information technology, economics and politics, and on the other hand increased attention to the development of

training materials for trades and professions within the German dual-training system (comprising in-company training and day release studies). Particular attention will be devoted to materials relating to the commercial employment sector. Materials relating to popular careers such as office professionals, retail sales personnel, wholesale and foreign trade specialists, and industrial management and clerical staff will be given priority. Further career areas for which materials will be produced include medical and dental assistants, physiotherapists and the caring professions such as nursing, geriatric care and healthcare workers. Materials will be

produced in areas new to the programme, including training materials for beauticians, hairdressers and social work professions involving personal care and childcare. Licenced editions of these materials are available already through the German-language publishers Veritas (for Austria) and Sauerländer (for Switzerland) and in China, Finland, Croatia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania, successful vocational literature has already been published under licence. You too can update your careers training programme with Cornelsen’s vocational training publications. Licensees are very welcome.

Health Care and Nursing; Health Care and Paediatric Nursing A Review by Marie-Luise Friedemann, PhD, RN

The book before me, Volume 3 of the series “In Good Hands – Health Care and Nursing; Health Care and Paediatric Nursing”, 736 pages long, has made a positive impression on me. Since I have never nursed in Germany, reading the book meant discovering anew the subject of nursing care and the roles involved. In the USA people often take the view that knowledge from third parties is somehow less valuable than one’s own. This book provides the proof that this attitude is wrong. Having intended to skim through the book, I found myself unable to skip any significant part: the contents were too gripping, entertaining and creative.

voyage of discovery of himself/ herself and how he/she relates to others. These are the topics which develop nursing care into a profession and nurses into experts. (. . .) Finally, a few remarks on my main interest in including the family in nursing care. Since working with parents and families is of primary importance in paediatric nursing, dealing with the viewpoint of the parents and its integration into the care programme is appropriate. Co-operation with parents, preparation for the discharge of the child and the nurses’ willingness to address the concerns of the parents will probably also gain importance in Germany. The role of family members is also addressed in topics relating to geriatric care. In geriatric nursing homes and home care, the main issue is integration. As a result of my research I have experienced

how important it is not only to tolerate family members but rather to integrate them as partners in the care regime. The basics of this topic are already dealt with in volume 1 of the series, in the detailed chapter “Beraten und Anleiten” [Advising and Guiding]. I am convinced that the series “In Good Hands” takes an important step into the future of nursing care. Business and culture … … aren’t necessarily poles apart; they can support and complement each other, as shown by two new non-fiction publications Management by Socrates – what Philosophy has to offer Business reveals the advantages which philosophising can bring to business leaders. It is not a guidebook with hasty tips. On the contrary, it offers substantiated ideas to reflect upon. It encourages the reader to review his or her actions and thought processes, to question restraints and to search for new perspectives.

My adventure began with the instructions for the use of the book, a detailed description of how to interpret various colours, symbols, red and blue lines. Nevertheless, the stories, quotations, illustrations, caricatures, introductory pages, and research boxes made the text lively and realistic. (. . .) The book holds the attention of the reader, contrary to many English texts, which allow my thoughts to wander. The content of the book provides everything required for an expansion of the role of carer. Of course, more indepth study is required, but this book lays the foundation stone which widens the horizons of carers, clarifies the complexity of the caring professions and directs their attention to nursing care systems, healthcare policy, ecology, law and ethics relating to minorities and ethnic groups. Learning section 4 of the book sends the reader on a gripping

A German as a Foreign Language Course Programme from A1 to C1 hasn’t been invented? Yes it has! – studio d! studio d, our tried and tested course for adult learners of German as a foreign language, has up to now taken students from levels A1 to B1. The course is theoretically well founded, has proved itself in practice and has been very well received by learners, who quickly gain confidence in language use. This has made studio d the most successful German as a Foreign Language course worldwide. Now the first German as a Foreign Language Course is to cover all levels from A1 to C1. Changing course series at intermediate level is finally a thing of the past. With its gentle progression from level B1 to B2, the intermediate

book provides a comprehensive guide for students. The learnerfriendly progression is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In a total of three volumes (two of them at B2 level) learners reach level C1. The lexis is systematically expanded, whereby idioms and expressions are given special attention. The clearly-structured grammar sections are presented in context. Supporting drills and exercises enable learners to make lasting improvements in their communicative competences. Authentic texts on a variety of current topics motivate course participants to speak. The well
