Stingrays Back At Home To Host Jacksonville Friday The South Carolina Stingrays play their only game of the week at home on Friday night against the Jacksonville Icemen at the North Charleston Coliseum. The Rays are coming off a four-game road swing that included three contests against North Division teams in which they went 3-0-1. SC sits in second place in the South Division with 68 points thru 48 games. After a win in Norfolk on Wednesday, the Icemen are tied in sixth place in the division standings with 42 points and trail Orlando for the final playoff spot in the table by eight points. The Stingrays boast the top defense and penalty killing units in the ECHL, allowing just 2.25 goals per game while discarding 91.6% of opponents’ power play opportunities this season. Jacksonville has done better on the defensive side of the puck this season, allowing 3.35 tallies per game while posting a penalty kill percentage at 82.7%. The tilt begins a four-game homestand for the Stingrays which will account for their final contests in North Charleston during February. After Friday, the teams have three more scheduled meetings this season. Monarchs Force Series Split, Top Rays In OT Matt Marcinew scored at 1:15 of overtime to give the Manchester Monarchs a 2-1 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays at the SNHU Arena on Sunday afternoon. Forward Taylor Cammarata registered the only goal for South Carolina during the third period, scoring his 10th of the season from defenseman Paul Geiger. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made the start in net for the Stingrays and took the loss after making 26 saves in the contest. Branden Komm turned aside 31 shots and picked up the win for the Monarchs. Neither team was able to convert on the power play for the second straight day, each finishing 0-for-2 in the contest.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Icemen Jacksonville is continuing a three-game road trip which began in Norfolk on Wednesday and will also finish in Norfolk on Monday. A 5-2 win Wedesday against the Admirals gave the Icemen their third win in their last four games, which have also included victories over Greenville and Allen. Jacksonville has struggled to gain consistency this season and currently have an overall record of 18-27-3-3 in their inaugural year. The team’s leading scorer, Elgin Pearce, has posted 38 points on 15 goals and 23 assists in 46 games. Jimmy Lodge has also been an important offensive threat with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 38 games. Rookie forward Cameron Critchlow has recently flourished, posting 27 points through 49 games on 10 goals and 17 assists. Defensemen Christopher Dienes and Dajon Mingo have become part of the team’s offense with 22 and 19 points respectively. Dienes, in his rookie season out of Western Michigan, has four goals and 18 assists while Mingo has contributed three goals and 16 helpers. Austin Lotz had emerged as the starter for the Icemen but has recently been summoned to the AHL by the Manitoba Moose, leaving Colton Phinney and Alex Sakellaropoulos as the team’s options in between the pipes. All-Time History vs. Jacksonville Friday’s meeting is the seventh between South Carolina and Jacksonville during the first season of play for the Icemen. The Rays were victorious in the first bout in Jacksonville on Oct. 21 by a score of 3-2 and have gone on to win three other contests against their newest division rival this season. Overall, SC is 4-2-0 against the Icemen this season. The Stingrays were familiar with Jacksonville’s first ECHL franchise, the Lizard Kings, during their existance from 1995-2000. The two teams will face-off 10 total times during the Icemen’s inaugural year in Jacksonville. Top Notch Goaltending Tandem South Carolina goaltenders Parker Milner and Jeff Jakaitis have made up the top tandem in the league this season and are both currently in the top five in the ECHL’s goals-against average leaders. After his second shutout of the season on Saturday for his fourth straight win, Milner’s GAA is now down to 2.03 which is second in the league. Jakaitis’ mark of 2.19 is fifth among all qualifying netminders. The two have combined for more than 2,300 minutes in net this year along with three shutout performances. Shots Securing Success South Carolina has done well when outshooting its opponents this season, posting a record of 20-6-2. The Stingrays have managed to hold teams to an average of just 26.94 shots on goal per game this year, which is the lowest number in the league. Top Dogs On Defense The Stingrays have allowed an average of 2.25 goals per game this season, which gives them the top defensive unit in the ECHL through 48 games. South Carolina also owns the top penalty killing rate in the league at 91.6% with just 16 power play goals allowed in 191 shorthanded situations this year. In their last nine games, the Rays have gone 35/36 on the PK.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Hughes, Simonelli Get AHL Calls The Stingrays announced multiple transactions Tuesday, with defenseman Tommy Hughes recalled to the AHL’s Hershey Bears and blueliner Frankie Simonelli signing a PTO with the AHL’s Utica Comets. Hughes has appeared in 26 games with South Carolina this season, scoring eight points (2g, 6a) along with a +5 rating and 18 penalty minutes. It is the second recall for the London, Ont. native, who suited up in four games with the Bears earlier this year and registered two penalty minutes. Simonelli has been enjoying success on both sides of the puck with the Stingrays this season, posting 30 points (8goals, 20a) in 46 games. The defender has played in 64 career AHL games from 2014-17 with the Providence Bruins and Bakersfield Condors, scoring 12 points (3g, 9a). Leaders Against Jacksonville Forward Steven Whitney leads the Rays in scoring during the team’s six previous games against Jacksonville this season with five points two goals and three assists. Defenseman Joey Leach is second with four points on a goal and three helpers. Forwards Joe Devin and Dylan Margonari have each chipped in three points apiece. Jeff Jakaitis has suited up for three games against Jacksonville and has a 2-1 record, while Parker Milner has a GAA of 1.02 and a save percentage at 0.926 in two appearances opposing the Icemen. McGauley Continues To Aid Offense Forward Tim McGauley picked up three assists last weekend and now has 31 points on the season with 10 goals and 21 helpers. All of his numbers this year have eclipsed his totals during 39 regular season games with the team last season. The Wilcox, Sask. native has seemingly scored in bunches this year and has accumulated nine multi-point performances while appearing in 44 games overall. His assist mark is tied for third on the team behind forward Joe Devin and defenseman Frankie Simonelli.

Milner Shuts Out Monarchs With 22 Saves Paul Geiger’s first period goal stood up as the only tally of the night and Parker Milner stopped all 22 shots the Manchester Monarchs sent to the net in a 1-0 victory for the South Carolina Stingrays at the SNHU Arena on Saturday night. The shutout was Milner’s second of the season for the Stingrays as well as his 16th win of the year. SC got the only goal of the night when Geiger crashed the net and redirected the puck home on a pass by Tim McGauley at 16:38 of the first. Steven Whitney started the play by finding space at the top of the offensive zone, then moved it down low for McGauley, who found Geiger open in front for his 6th goal of the year. Stingrays Feel Right At Home With 4-1 Win In Worcester The South Carolina Stingrays scored in the first three minutes of each period to earn their 30th win of the season by a score of 4-1 in their first-ever meeting with the Worcester Railers last Friday night at the DCU Center. Defenseman Frankie Simonelli had a three-point night with a goal and two assists, while Tim McGauley had two helpers and goaltender Parker Milner earned his 15th victory of the year with 21 saves. South Carolina outshot Worcester 28-22 in the game, while both teams came up empty on the power play with the Railers getting four chances and the Rays earning three.
